Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto His Life and Works
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.87 $This volume chronicles the life of Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, one of the greatest and most controversial of kabbalistic thinkers. Best known for his work Mesillat Yesharim―a treatise on the path man must follow to attain religious and ethical perfection―Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, also known as the Ramchal, was a kabbalist, Hebrew poet, accomplished linguist, and leader of a group of religious thinkers who were primarily interested in the problems of redemption and messianism. Born in Padua, Italy, in 1707, Luzzatto was regarded as a genius from childhood, thoroughly knowledgeable in Bible, Talmud, Midrash, halakhic literature, and classical languages and literature. He also possessed an extensive knowledge of contemporary Italian culture. In 1727, while immersed in kabbalistic speculations, Luzzatto claimed to have heard the voice of a maggid―a divine power inclined to reveal heavenly secrets to human beings. Henceforth, the revelations of the maggid served to comprise future kabbalistic writings, only a few of which survived and were published. When word of Luzzatto's teachings reached the leading rabbis of Italy, a vehement controversy followed and he was coerced into giving up his kabbalistic writings and refraining from teaching Kabbalah altogether. Eventually, Luzzatto was forced to leave Italy. He lived in Amsterdam for a number of years, writing on many subjects but never openly teaching Kabbalah. In 1743 Luzzatto moved to Eretz Yisrael and lived there until 1746, when he and his family fell victim to a plague in Acco.

The Rabbi's Cat 2
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.45 $Joann Sfar's beloved, humorous, and wise talking cat is back for more beautifully illustrated adventures in Algiers and across Africa in the 1930s. While the rabbi is away, his cat tags along with Malka of the Lions (the rabbi's enigmatic cousin), who roams the desert with his ferocious-on-demand lion. Some believe Malka to be a pious Jew, others think he's a shrewd womanizer, but the cat will be the one to discover the surprising truth.Back in Algiers, the rabbi's daughter, Zlabya, and her new husband fill the house with their fighting, while the city around them fills with a rising tide of anti-Semitism. On a whim, the rabbi's cat, the rabbi, a sheikh (also a cousin of the rabbi), and a very misplaced Russian painter set out on a fantastic journey (even encountering a young reporter named Tintin in the Congo) in search of an African Jerusalem. It turns out to be very fortuitous that the rabbi's cat is not just a talking cat, but a multilingual talking cat.

Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz: His Vision, Wisdom, and Warmth Lit Up the World
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.96 $He taught so many of us to learn. He taught so many of us to pray. Now, through his engrossing life story, Reb Meir Zlotowitz will teach us how to become better parents, better children, better friends. Better people. Many of us know the story of how Meir Zlotowitz, a young graphic artist, started a company -- and a Torah revolution -- called ArtScroll. In this scrupulously researched and beautifully written biography, author Yisroel Besser paints a stunning portrait of a remarkable man, one of the greatest Torah disseminators of our time; a giant with global impact who managed, at the same time, to be devoted to his family and loyal to his friends. Busy building a Torah empire, he somehow always managed to find the time to advise and help the countless friends and strangers who sought him out. What was the secret of Rabbi Zlotowitz's phenomenal success? How did he establish relationships with the greatest Torah luminaries of the time? How did his personal challenges affect the person he became? What role did his rebbi, Rav Moshe Feinstein, play? How did he attract supporters from the entire spectrum of Jewish life even while being unapologetically rooted in the world of the yeshiva? What sort of advice and guidance did he offer younger businessmen, educators and activists who looked to "Uncle Meir" as a mentor? Most important of all: How did he maintain his care and concern for every individual, while devoting himself so wholeheartedly to the entire Jewish people? This book is a page-turner, a hard-to-put-down masterpiece that will inspire you to reach out and change the world -- while investing yourself in those closest to you, your family and friends. It's a story not only about what Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz did, but about what he was. A story of one man s courage, his vision, and his unwavering faith in the Jewish People and their Torah.

Rabbi Akiva: Sage of the Talmud (Jewish Lives)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.53 $A compelling and lucid account of the life and teachings of a founder of rabbinic Judaism and one of the most beloved heroes of Jewish history Born in the Land of Israel around the year 50 C.E., Rabbi Akiva was the greatest rabbi of his time and one of the most important influences on Judaism as we know it today. Traditional sources tell how he was raised in poverty and unschooled in religious tradition but began to learn the Torah as an adult. In the aftermath of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 C.E., he helped shape a new direction for Judaism through his brilliance and his character. Mystic, legalist, theologian, and interpreter, he disputed with his colleagues in dramatic fashion yet was admired and beloved by his peers. Executed by Roman authorities for his insistence on teaching Torah in public, he became the exemplar of Jewish martyrdom. Drawing on the latest historical and literary scholarship, this book goes beyond older biographies, untangling a complex assortment of ancient sources to present a clear and nuanced portrait of Talmudic hero Rabbi Akiva.

Rabbi Jesus: An Intimate Biography
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.28 $Interpretations of the life of Jesus have flourished for nearly two millennia--from the Gospels to scholarly investigations by theologians and historians, to fictional portraits by novelists like Nikos Kazantzakis and Norman Mailer. Despite this long history, a clear and coherent picture of Jesus as a man and a teacher has remained elusive. Now, Bruce Chilton puts the pieces of the puzzle together in an extraordinary biography that sweeps readers into first-century Palestine and re-creates the world as Jesus knew it. Chilton draws on recent archaeological findings to paint a vivid portrait of the social customs, political forces, and religious beliefs and practices of the period. Examining new translations and interpretations of ancient texts against this fresh, historically accurate background, he offers a revolutionary look at Jesus' early life and the philosophical and psychological foundations of the ideas he promulgated as a young man. Chilton provides evidence that contradicts long-held beliefs about Jesus and the movement he led. He shows, for example, that Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Galilee, not Nazareth or Bethlehem of Judea, and that the High Priest Caiaphas, not Pontius Pilate, played the central role in Jesus' execution. It is his description of Jesus' role as a rabbi, or "master," of Jewish oral traditions, a teacher of the Kabbalah, and a practitioner of a Galilean form of Judaism that emphasized direct communication with God, however, that casts an entirely new light on the origins of Christianity. By placing Jesus within the context of his times, Chilton uncovers truths lost to history and reveals a new Jesus for the new millennium.

The Rabbi's Atheist Daughter, Ernestine Rose, International Feminist Pioneer [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $Known as "the queen of the platform," Ernestine Rose was more famous than her women's rights co-workers, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. By the 1850s, Rose had become an outstanding orator for feminism, free thought, and anti-slavery. Yet, she would gradually be erased from history for being too much of an outlier: an immigrant, a radical, and an atheist. In The Rabbi's Atheist Daughter, Bonnie S. Anderson recovers the unique life and career of Ernestine Rose. The only child of a Polish rabbi, Ernestine Rose rejected religion at an early age, successfully sued for the return of her dowry after rejecting an arranged betrothal, and left her family, Judaism, and Poland forever. In London, she became a follower of socialist Robert Owen and met her future husband, William Rose. Together they emigrated to New York in 1836. In the United States, Ernestine Rose rapidly became a leader in movements against slavery, religion, and women's oppression and a regular on the lecture circuit, speaking in twenty-three of the thirty-one states. She challenged the radical Christianity that inspired many nineteenth-century women reformers and yet, even as she rejected Judaism, she was both a victim and critic of antisemitism, as well as nativism. In 1869, after the Civil War, she and her husband returned to England, where she continued her work for radical causes. By the time women achieved the vote, for which she tirelessly advocated throughout her long career, her pioneering contributions to women's rights had been forgotten. The Rabbi's Atheist Daughter restores Ernestine Rose to her rightful place in history and offers an engaging account of her international activism.
