Rationales of Ownership Transactions and Claims to Ownership in Contemporary Papua New Guinea
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 61.59 $What constitutes a resource, and how do people make claims on them? In the context of a burgeoning discourse of property, these are vital questions. Rationales of Ownership offers conceptual clarification in the context of material, intellectual and cultural resources in Papua New Guinea. The volume is a result of a major research project headed by Marilyn Strathern and Eric Hirsch, and brings together contributions from social anthropology and law. The approaches demonstrated, and conclusions reached, build upon recent understandings developed within Melanesian anthropology, but have far wider significance. The first publication sold out in Papua New Guinea due to the relevance of its approach and contents to lawyers and policy makers in that country. It is here made available to a wider readership, particularly those teaching courses on resource development, cultural and intellectual property, contemporary Pacific societies, environmental degradation, and property itself. ADVANCE PRAISE '...a unique contribution to the discipline's voice in contemporary global debates...this volume represents the best of the comparative, ethnographic tradition providing critical insight into difference and similarity on issues that entangle us all in various degrees of responsibility and care. It will be read by anthropologists, policy makers and all academic and non-academic students of what has come to be seen as the test area of the survival of cultural difference.' Marta Roahtynskyj, University of Guelph Lawrence Kalinoe is Professor and Executive Dean in the School of Law, University of Papua New Guinea. James Leach is Research Fellow, King's College and Associate Lecturer, Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge.

Rationale Divinorum Officiorum of William Durand of Mende : A New Translation of the Prologue and Book One
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.38 $The Rationale Divinorum Officiorum is arguably the most important medieval treatise on the symbolism of church architecture and rituals of worship. Written by the French bishop William Durand of Mende (1230-1296), the treatise is ranked with the Bible as one of the most frequently copied and disseminated texts in all of medieval Christianity. It served as an encyclopedic compendium and textbook for liturgists and remains an indispensable guide for understanding the significance of medieval ecclesiastical art and worship ceremonies. This book marks the first English translation of the prologue and book one of the Rationale in almost two centuries. Timothy M. Thibodeau begins with a brief biography of William Durand and a discussion of the importance of the work during its time. Thibodeau compares previous translations of the Rationale in the medieval period and afterward. Then he presents his translation of the prologue and book one. The prologue discusses the principles of allegorical interpretation of the liturgy, while book one features detailed descriptions of the various parts of the church and its ecclesiastical ornaments. It also features extensive commentary on cemeteries, various rites of consecration and dedication, and a discussion of the sacraments.Thibodeau is a well-respected historian who has published extensively on the history of Christianity and the liturgy of the medieval Church. He is also coeditor of the critical edition of the Rationale in Latin. His translation is an indispensable guide for both scholars and general readers who hope to gain a richer understanding of medieval art, architecture, and culture.

Rationale divinorum officiorum V-VI (Hardback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 205.93 $Brepols, Turnhout, 1998. 621p. Original terra-cotta gilt stamped cloth. Small sticker glued to paste-down endpaper. Series: Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis, CXL A. Nice copy. ?At long last, two qualified medieval scholars (?) have inaugurated the publication of William Durand?s magnum opus, the ?Rationale divinorum officio rum? This activist bishop of Mende (1285-1296), (?) was, (?) determined to instruct his clergy in the mysteries of the liturgy by compiling and redacting in one great whole the writings of the eminent liturgiologists of the twelfth en early thirteenth centuries. It is a true summa of the venerable allegorical method of interpreting the enacted liturgy and, as such, one of the most important and influential compositions of the high Middle Ages (?). Unlike his predecessors, Durand, in his capacity as an eminent canonist and author, used and listed in the margin his valuable juridical sources; it is one the merits of this edition that these references are carefully identified in a special apparatus. (?) As the most popular liturgical commentary of the following three centuries, the Rationale survives in over a hundred manuscripts and confronts the editors with a daunting task. (?) They opted for a ?scientific? rather than a strictly critical edition, based on eight fine manuscripts. By so doing they have published a completely reliable and readable text without cluttering the apparatus with useless and expensive minutiae. The editors are to be congratulated for putting so accurate and serviceable an edition of this vast text in our hands.? (WILLIAM G. STOREY in Church History, 1997, pp.565-566). Antiquarian

Rationale of the Dirty Joke: An Analysis of Sexual Humor
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 55.62 $Why do people tell dirty jokes? And what is it about a joke's dirtiness that makes it funny? G. Legman was perhaps the foremost scholar of the dirty joke, and as legions of humor writers and comedians know, his Rationale of the Dirty Joke remains the most exhaustive and authoritative study of the subject. More than two thousand jokes and folktales are presented, covering such topics as The Female Fool, The Fortunate Fart, Mutual Mismatching, and The Sex Machine. These folk texts are authentically transcribed in their innocent and sometimes violent entirety. Legman studies each for its historical and socioanalytic significance, revealing what these jokes mean to the people who tell them and to the people who listen and laugh. Here - back in print - is the definitive text for comedians and humor writers, Freudian scholars and late night television enthusiasts. Rationale of the Dirty Joke will amuse you, offend you, challenge you, and disgust you, all while demonstrating the intelligence and hilarity of the dirty joke.
