Rossini in Restoration Paris: The Sound of Modern Life (Cambridge Studies in Opera)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.75 $Best remembered for such light-hearted works as Il barbiere di Siviglia, Gioachino Rossini produced a sequence of large-scale serious French operas after his move to Paris in 1824 which overwhelmed audiences with their musical power, and responded to the French Restoration. Rather than presenting a traditional account of Rossini's life and works, Benjamin Walton traces instead the shifting patterns of Rossinian criticism from before the composer's arrival in Paris to the end of the 1820s, outlining a type of musical history that uses immersion in a narrow time period as a way to reconceive the relationships between opera and the wider currents of life outside the opera house. In place of the comic Rossini of later memory, this book argues for a composer whose music resonated with the experience of contemporary life, and was integrally bound up in the struggle to define French romanticism at the time.

Rossini: The Man and His Music
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 54.76 $Exhausted by his fame as the composer of such masterpieces as "The Barber of Seville", "William Tell", "L'Italiana in Algieri", "La Cenerentola", "Semiramide", and "La Gazza Ladra", Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) retired from the operatic stage at the age of 37. His renowned, exuberant wit and personal charm served only to mask a much darker persona, that of a neurotic, highly sensitive and depressed genius who, at the height of his acclaim and popularity, renounced an active musical career and retreated into a life of rest and privacy. Rossini (Composers Across Cultures)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 72.63 $Gioachino Rossini was one of the most influential, as well as one of the most industrious and emotionally complex of the great nineteenth-century composers. Between 1810 and 1829, he wrote 39 operas, a body of work, comic and serious, which transformed Italian opera and radically altered the course of opera in France. His retirement from operatic composition in 1829, at the age of 37, was widely assumed to be the act of a talented but lazy man. In reality, political events and a series of debilitating illnesses were the determining factors. After drafting the Stabat Mater in 1832, Rossini wrote no music of consequence for the best part of twenty-five years, before the clouds lifted and he began composing again in Paris in the late 1850s. During this glorious Indian summer of his career, he wrote 150 songs and solo piano pieces his 'Sins of Old Age' and his final masterpiece, the Petite Messe solennelle. The image of Rossini as a gifted but feckless amateur-the witty, high-spirited bon vivant who dashed off The Barber of Seville in a mere thirteen days-persisted down the years, until the centenary of his death in 1968 inaugurated a process of re-evaluation by scholars, performers, and writers. The original 1985 edition of Richard Osborne's pioneering and widely acclaimed Rossini redefined the life and provided detailed analyses of the complete Rossini oeuvre. Twenty years on, all Rossini's operas have been staged and recorded, a Critical Edition of his works is well advanced, and a scholarly edition of his correspondence, including 250 previously unknown letters from Rossini to his parents, is in progress. Drawing on these past two decades of scholarship and performance, this new edition of Rossini provides the most detailed portrait we have yet had of one of the worlds best-loved and most enigmatic composers.

Rossini
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.35 $A classical musician by training and a conservative by inclination, Rossini, nevertheless, broke the mold of the old Italian operatic order and laid the foundations for a new generation of romantically inspired music-dramatists. One of the most influential of nineteenth-century composers, in touch with many leading musicians of his day, Rossini was also the most complex of men--a mixture of affability and reserve, industry and indolence, wit and melancholy. This detailed biography also includes a survey of Rossini's choral works, and the vocal and solo piano music written during the last decade of his life.

Rossini: His Life and Times [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $Gioacchino Rossini is known to most people as the composer of the ever popular William tell overture, and of one of the best loved of all the comic operas, the Barber of Seville. Using illustrations and contemporary accounts and documents, this biography attempts to explain the reasons for Rossini's success, popularity and fame, setting his life and works within the context of his times, and in so doing, draws a persuasive picture of musical life in Italy and Europe in the years that followed the fall of Napoleon. From it emerges also a portrait of a warm and witty personality, that of Rossini himself.
