Scharnhorst and Gneisenau (Shipcraft 20)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.38 $The ‘ShipCraft’ series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeler through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring color profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modeling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references – books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. The two German ships which form the subject of this volume were among the first products of rearmament under Hitler. For political reasons they were neither as large nor as well armed as foreign equivalents, but they were very fast, which led them to be described as ‘battlecruisers’ in some quarters. They enjoyed an adventurous war, both surviving heavy damage, before Scharnhorst was sunk in an epic gun battle off the North Cape, while Gneisenau succumbed to heavy air attack.

Battleship Scharnhorst: The Crew Photo Album
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.18 $This book contains over 150 photographs from three of the Scharnhorst's crewmember's photo albums and is a must have for every serious student of naval history. More than 70 of these fantastic photos were taken by crew members themselves and have never been published before! There are over 60 official Kriegsmarine photos that were given to crew members to start their albums, including the sinking of the British aircraft carrier Glorious and photos from the famous Channel dash. In addition, several pages reproduce a set of model builder plans for the Scharnhorst and her sister Gneisenau. These plans were sold to model builders in Germany in 1941. More than a book of photos, the book gives a detailed account of the Scharnhorst's long cruise with her sister ship Gneisenau in the spring of 1940, including the battle with the Halifax convoys. Also is the story of the battle of North Cape, and the fateful decisions by the German High command that let to her sinking and the death of almost two thousand men. The heart of the book are the photos from the Alfred Herman Rieger collection, the Max Henschler collection, and a stunning album of unknown ownership. Their photos show combat, the Scharnhorst fighting ice and heavy seas, an interesting series from Hitler's visit, as well as life on board. Many of the boys had some real talent as demonstrated by the artistic nature of their photos. While not part of the Technical Reference series, author Randall Shoker did add technical details in the captions describing the ships equipment in many of the photos. Model builders and historians alike will find the details in the photos and captions informative. A compelling look at the struggle of the North Atlantic as seen through the camera lenses of the men who were there. If you are a student of the Kriegsmarine or the battle of the Atlantic, you must own this book. Book is in large format and is 128 pages long printed on heavy archival paper.

The Battleship Scharnhorst (Hardcover)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.08 $Hardcover. The Kriegsmarines Scharnhorst was a German capital ship, described either as a battleship or battlecruiser, and the lead ship of her class, which included one other ship, Gneisenau. She was launched on 3 October 1936 and completed in January 1939, armed with nine 28cm C/34 guns in three triple turrets. She operated with Gneisenau for much of the early portion of World War II, including sorties into the Atlantic to raid British merchant shipping. They took part in Operation Weseruebung (AprilJune 1940), the German invasion of Norway, during which they sank the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and her escort destroyers Acasta and Ardent. Scharnhorst also sank HMS Rawalpindi in November 1939. In early 1943, Scharnhorst joined the Tirpitz in Norway to intercept Allied convoys to the Soviet Union. On a sortie from Norway to attack a convoy, the German force was intercepted by British ships and during the Battle of the North Cape (26 December 1943), HMS Duke of York and her escorts sank Scharnhorst. Most of her crew was lost. This is the most comprehensive examination of Scharnhorst ever published, drawing on new research and technology to tell the full story of the ship. It includes a complete set of detailed line drawings with fully descriptive keys and full-colour 3D artwork, supported by technical details, photographs, and text on the building of the ship, as well as a record of her service history. A highly detailed study of the World War II German battleship that sparred with the British Royal Navy from 1939-43. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Battleships of the Scharnhorst Class: The Scharnhorst and Gneisenau: the Backbone of the German Surface Forces at the Outbreak of War
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 78.61 $The warships of the World War II German Navy are among the most popular subjects in naval history, and one of the best collections is the concise but authoritative six volume series written by Gerhard Koop and illustrated by Klaus-Peter Schmolke. Each book contains an account of the development of a particular class, a detailed description of the ships, with full technical details, and an outline of their service, and are heavily illustrated with plans, battle maps and a substantial collection of photographs. The first five volumes of this much sought after series are now available in paperback, with the sixth volume German Light Cruisers of World War II, planned for release in the fall of 2014.Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were the products of a long, involved, and politically-determined design process that witnessed this class of battleships develop from an improved Pocket Battleship to what many described as a battlecruiser. These ships were the most active, and successful, of the Kriegesmarine's major warships, took part in numerous famous operations, including the infamous 'Channel Dash." and played a key part of Germany's struggle to wrest control of the sea at the outbreak of World War II. Each was superbly equipped and armed, and designed to cause maximum disruption to Allied shipping. This reference book traces their history, accompanied by outstanding technical drawings and precise specifications.
