Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.28 $Charles Schulz, the most widely syndicated and beloved cartoonist of all time, is also one of the most misunderstood figures in American culture. Now, acclaimed biographer David Michaelis gives us the first full-length biography of Schulz: at once a creation story, a portrait of a hidden American genius, and a chronicle contrasting the private man with the central role he played in shaping the national imagination. The son of a barber, Schulz was born in Minnesota to modest, working class roots. In 1943, just three days after his mother′s tragic death from cancer, Schulz, a private in the army, shipped out for boot camp and the war in Europe. The sense of shock and separation never left him. And these early experiences would shape his entire life. With Peanuts, Schulz embedded adult ideas in a world of small children to remind the reader that character flaws and childhood wounds are with us always. It was the central truth of his own life, that as the adults we′ve become and as the children we always will be, we can free ourselves, if only we can see the humour in the predicaments of funny-looking kids. Schulz′s Peanuts profoundly influenced the country in the second half of the 20th century. But the strip was anchored in the collective experience and hardships of Schulz′s generation-the generation that survived the Great Depression and liberated Europe and the Pacific and came home to build the post-war world.

Walter Schulz-Matan.

Letters and Drawings of Bruno Schulz: With Selected Prose (English and Polish Edition)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.19 $Bruno Schulz (1892 - 1942) was a Polish Jewish writer, fine artist, literary critic and art teacher. He is regarded as one of the great Polish-language prose stylists of the 20th century. In 1938, he was awarded the Polish Academy of Literature's prestigious Golden Laurel award. Several of Schulz's works were lost in the Holocaust, including short stories from the early 1940s and his final, unfinished novel The Messiah. Schulz was shot and killed by a German Nazi in 1942 while walking back home toward Drohobycz Ghetto with a loaf of bread. In his brilliant, intensely illuminated fiction, Schulz evoked a glorious world through a magical combination of personal myth, fantasy, and highly sensual language. "If Schulz had been allowed to live out his life," Isaac Bashevis Singer has said, "he might have given us untold treasures, but what he did in his short life was enough to make him one of the most remarkable writers who ever lived". This is the first English translation of Schulz's collected letters, and it includes as well 75 drawings and photos and nine pieces - essays, interviews, and narratives - previously uncollected in English. Schulz's letters shed light on the genesis of his small but stunning literary oeuvre. As it stands, this collection, painstakingly gathered by Jerzy Ficowski over a period of four decades, constitutes a remarkable portrait of a remarkable artist.
