Thomas Schütte Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.09 $Since the 1980s, Thomas Schütte has been forging a highly individual, enigmatic, and stunningly diverse œuvre, one that stretches beyond the reach of all trends and fashions. This volume presents a retrospective on his career to this point, offering fascinating insight into nearly thirty years of artistic development. Schütte has played a substantial role in the revival of figural work in contemporary art, and, in particular, has worked to develop sculpture and statuary art as an “anti-sculptor.” This lavishly illustrated volume reveals the multi-layered subjects and diverse artistic processes employed in his work, which encompasses bronze, wood, ceramic, and steel, as well as more unusual materials like aluminum and Fimo modeling clay. From massive, bulky women and gnome-like midgets to monumental warriors or representations of thought-patterns, all the artworks reproduced here testify to the singular genius of Thomas Schütte. Many of his sculptures are to be found in American museums, like the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, or the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Thomas Schütte. Figur
***** Thomas Schütte's sculptures and drawings of the human figure are a lesser known but equally important part of the artist's oeuvre. From hand-sized ceramic sculptures to four-meter tall iron figures, his strangely moving sculptures have the quality of being at once alien and familiar.

Thomas Schütte (Phaidon Contemporary Artists Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 69.62 $Thomas Sch++tte is a catalog of works by this contemporary German artist. Sch++tte studied under Gerhard Richter, Benjamin Buchloh, and Bernd and Hilla Becher at the D++sseldorf Academy in the 1970s. He comes from that strong conceptual background, but as his career matured the emotional content of his work evolved and became much more potent. Sch++tte's work is incredibly eclectic: ceramic figures, architectural models, drawings, outdoor sculptures, photographs, and installations. A recent work, Big Spirits (1996), is a collection of larger-than-life-size aluminum figures that seem to be morphing before one's eyes. They are at once ghost, human, and machine. Also riveting is The Innocents (1994), a series of photographs of the heads of handmade figurines, and United Enemies, A Play in Ten Scenes (1993)--offset lithographs, also of figurines wrapped in Sch++tte's clothes. His watercolors are beautiful, ranging from drawings of fruit to portraits of women. Whatever the project, Sch++tte is tapped in to a particular humanity.Included in the book are essays by Julian Heynen and Angela Vettese, an interview with James Lingwood, and an essay by Roman philosopher Seneca, chosen by the artist. There is also a story by Sch++tte--printed in English for the first time. --Jennifer Cohen

Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky

Psychoaktiv
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.01 $A Pioneer of Field Research into Bodies and Spatial Relations. Pia Stadtbäumer (b. Münster, 1959; lives and works in Düsseldorf) isa leading exponent of the rediscovery of the human figure insculpture. Like fellow artists such as Katharina Fritsch, PaulMcCarthy, Thomas Schütte, and Kiki Smith, she rose to renown inthe 1980s with now-canonical works that pursued a probingexamination and exposition of the representation of the body in arapidly changing contemporary world. In Stadtbäumer's early oeuvre, the focus is on the engagement with bodies in sculptures andinstallations―the proportions, demeanor, and modelling of theprotagonists of her compositions are spare, restricted to thetraditional role models of man, woman, and child. Anonymous andexchangeable, they become active protagonists in the exhibitionspace only by virtue of their unconventional gestures. Over the years, the artist has allowed other irritations to inform her sculptures, intervening into the physicality of her figures: outsize hanging arms, fragile hermaphrodites standing before the viewer, periwigs andattires molded after models from the Rococo. Defying the apocalypticdiscourse of the post-human, Stadtbäumer's sculptural gesturesevince organically unfolding and inventive variations on the nature ofman. The indispensable monograph offers a synopsis of three decades inStadtbäumer's career (1989–2019) and illustrates her equallyconceptual and intuitive approach. With a survey of her oeuvre byJulian Heynen and essays by Prof. Beate Söntgen and Ariadne vonSchirach.
