Postcolonial states and metropolitan societies still grapple today with the divisive and difficult legacies unleashed by settler colonialism.Whether they were settled for trade or geopolitical reasons, these settler communities had in common their shaping of landholding, laws, and race relations in colonies throughout the world. By looking at the detail of settlements in the twentieth century--from European colonial projects in Africa and expansionist efforts by the Japanese in Korea and Manchuria, to the Germans in Poland and the historical trajectories of Israel/Palestine and South Africa--and analyzing the dynamics set in motion by these settlers, the contributors to this volume establish points of comparison to offer a new framework for understanding the character and fate of twentieth-century empires.

The title of this work is taken from a poem describing the old Valley Turnpike, which cuts through the Shenandoah Valley. The pioneers followed it as an old Indian trail. According to tradition, it was first merely a beaten path of the buffalo. The author starts by sketching a general overview of the beginnings of the Valley settlements, focusing primarily on that part of Augusta County that was later formed into Rockingham. An account of the origin of many of the early Harrison families of Colonial times is included, and many English lines have been touched on. In tracing the Augusta or Rockingham families, the maternal lines have been handled as fully as the paternal ones. Among the lines traced (other than Harrisons) are: Bears, Bowmans, Browns, Byrds, Campbells, Conrads, Cravens, Davises, Davidsons, Deckers, Ewings, Gaines, Gordons, Hannas, Henkels, Hentons, Herrings, Hollingsworths, Hoppers, Houstons, Howards, Jordans, Keezells, Kennerlys, Koontzs, Lincolns, Logans, Mauzys, Monroes, Moores, Newmans, Otts, Pickerings, Prices, Smiths, Watsons, Williamses, Williamsons, Woodleys, Yanceys, and many more. Many of the early Valley of Virginia settlers resided on or near the Long Grey Trail, and the author brings the full weight of his acumen to bear on the Valley settlements, more especially on that part of Augusta County later formed into Rockingham. There was perhaps no family more intimately associated with the early history of Rockingham County than the Harrisons and their connections, the county seat itself being named for one of them. Appropriately, then, this work sets forth a detailed genealogy of the Harrisons of Augusta and their Harrison cousins throughout Virginia and in large parts of the United States and Britain. The author also traces the ancestry of about 50 other families who settled in this area, as well as provides articles on colonial and Indian wars and the Revolution, documentary accounts of political upheaval and transition, analyses of Virginia Valley migrations, including German, Scotch-Irish, and Pennsylvanian migrations, and sketches of early churches, militia, and courts.

This work analyzes the politics of anthropological knowledge from critical perspective that alters existing understandings of colonialism. At the same time, it produces insights into the history of anthropology. Organized around an historical reconstruction of the great anthropological controversy over doctrines of virgin birth, the book argues that the allegation a great deal about European colonial discourse and little if anything about indigenous beliefs. By means of an Australian example, the book shows not only that the alleged ignorance was an artifact of the anthropological theory that produced it, but also that the anthropology was an artifact of the anthropological theory that produced it, but also that the anthropology concerned has been closely tied into both the historical dispossession and the continuing oppression of native peoples. The author explores the links between metropolitan anthropological theory and local colonial politics from the 19th century up to the present, settler colonialism, and the ideological and sexual regimes that characterize it.

Settler Society in the English Leeward Islands, 1600-1776 is the first study of the history of the federated colony of the Leeward Islands - Antigua, Montserrat, Nevis, and St. Kitts - that covers all four islands in the period from their independence from Barbados in 1670 up to the outbreak of the American Revolution, which reshaped the Caribbean as well as the mainland American colonies. Settlers of Maryland 1679-1700 extends Gust Skordas's renowned Early Settlers of Maryland through the last quarter of the 17th century, identifying several thousand immigrants and their colorfully named tracts. Based on the same series of records as Skordas--Land Office books on file at the Hall of Records in Annapolis--the entries in this work are arranged by family name, county, name of tract granted, acreage, date, and reference to original source(s). Tract names often suggest English places familiar to the settler--perhaps places of origin or residence--and they are so many and so various that an index of tract names has been appended to the book. On balance, this is one of the most original contributions to Maryland genealogy in years.
