Blackie Sherrod was born, reared, and educated in Texas. After a failed career as a wingback at Howard Payne College, he spent most of World War II as a torpedo plane gunner in the Pacific. Sherrod began his sportswriting career in 1946 with the Fort Worth Press. He joined the Dallas Times Herald in 1958, and since 1984 his writing has graced the pages of the Dallas Morning News. His lengthy list of honors includes the Red Smith Award for distinguished contributions to his craft, a National Headliners Club Award, inclusion in the National Sportscasters-Sportswriters Hall of Fame, and an honorary doctorate from his alma mater. For the last dozen years, his work also has included general columns on the Morning News’ Viewpoints page. It is this source that furnished most of the work in this collection.

Sherrod leapt from the safety of a landing craft and waded through neck-deep water and a hail of bullets to reach the shores of the Tarawa Atoll with the US Marine Corps. From Foreword: "It is not too strong a statement to say that Marine Corps aviation came of age in World War II. We are fortunate that the distinguished journalist-historian Robert Sherrod has detailed the process by which it came of age in his History of Marine Corps Aviation in World War II. Originally published in 1952 by the Combat Forces Press, the book has long been out of print....Readers will find it a highly concentrated work. An examination of the table of contents will reveal the organization of the book: two introductory chapters carrying Marine aviation from its beginning up to World War II, then a chapter-by-chapter narrative account through the war, followed by a carefully researched set of appendices. The last of these appendices is a tour de force in itself, a compilation of thumbnail histories of virtually all Marine squadrons and other Marine aviation units involved in the war. The book can be read as a rousing war story. It can also be read as a case study of the evolution of organization and doctrine. The Courage to Hope addresses this regret-table episode in American politics, but it also tells Sherrod’s own story of growing up on a farm in southwest Georgia during the final violent years of Jim Crow. As a child she dreamed of leaving the South, but when her father was murdered by a white neighbor who was never brought to justice, Sherrod made a vow to stay in Georgia and commit herself to the cause of truth and racial healing. With her husband, Charles, a legend in the civil rights movement, she has devoted her life to empowering poor people and rural communities—Americans who are most in need. The incident that brought Sherrod into the spotlight does not define her life and work, but it strengthens her commitment to stand against the politics of fear and have the courage to hope.
