Dispatches from the Pacific: The World War II Reporting of Robert L. Sherrod
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.19 $In the fall of 1943, armed with only his notebooks and pencils, Time and Life correspondent Robert L. Sherrod leapt from the safety of a landing craft and waded through neck-deep water and a hail of bullets to reach the shores of the Tarawa Atoll with the US Marine Corps. Living shoulder to shoulder with the marines, Sherrod chronicled combat and the marines’ day-to-day struggles as they leapfrogged across the Central Pacific, battling the Japanese on Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. While the marines courageously and doggedly confronted an enemy that at times seemed invincible, those left behind on the American home front desperately scanned Sherrod’s columns for news of their loved ones. Following his death in 1994, the Washington Post heralded Sherrod’s reporting as "some of the most vivid accounts of men at war ever produced by an American journalist." Now, for the first time, author Ray E. Boomhower tells the story of the journalist in Dispatches from the Pacific: The World War II Reporting of Robert L. Sherrod, an intimate account of the war efforts on the Pacific front.

History of Marine Corps Aviation in World War II
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 99.12 $From Foreword: "It is not too strong a statement to say that Marine Corps aviation came of age in World War II. We are fortunate that the distinguished journalist-historian Robert Sherrod has detailed the process by which it came of age in his History of Marine Corps Aviation in World War II. Originally published in 1952 by the Combat Forces Press, the book has long been out of print....Readers will find it a highly concentrated work. An examination of the table of contents will reveal the organization of the book: two introductory chapters carrying Marine aviation from its beginning up to World War II, then a chapter-by-chapter narrative account through the war, followed by a carefully researched set of appendices. The last of these appendices is a tour de force in itself, a compilation of thumbnail histories of virtually all Marine squadrons and other Marine aviation units involved in the war. The book can be read as a rousing war story. It can also be read as a case study of the evolution of organization and doctrine. It is all here, including the diversions, digressions, and sometimes maldeployments from the main purpose of Marine aviation - to serve as the air element of an integrated air-ground team...."

Congress from the Inside: Observations from the Majority and the Minority
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 67.47 $Four decades of Democratic control of Congress abruptly came to an end with the 1994 elections, which propelled the Republican party to an unfamiliar role as the majority party in both houses of Congress. In his second term as a congressman from Ohio, Sherrod Brown was thrust into the frenetic, very partisan first 100 days of the Republicans Contract with America. This account of the transition from political majority status to minority status discloses the trauma felt by one party and the exhilaration experienced by the other as one era ended and a new one began.

The Courage to Hope: How I Stood Up to the Politics of Fear
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 72.61 $Shirley Sherrod shares what it was like to be the center of a media firestorm after she was forced to resign from the USDA after false charges. In the summer of 2010, Shirley Sherrod was catapulted into a media storm that blew apart her life and her job doing what she’d done for decades: helping poor, hardworking people live the American dream. She was a lifelong activist who served as Georgia’s first black director of rural development. A right-wing blogger, the now late Andrew Breitbart, disseminated a video clip of a speech Sherrod had given to the Georgia NAACP, intending to make her an example of “reverse racism.” The right-wing media ramped up the outrage, and before Sherrod had a chance to defend herself, the Obama administration demanded her resignation. Then, after hearing from Sherrod herself and learning the entire truth of what she said in that speech, the administration tried to backtrack. As public officials and media professionals admitted to being duped and apologized for their rush to judgment, Sherrod found herself the subject of a teachable moment. The Courage to Hope addresses this regret-table episode in American politics, but it also tells Sherrod’s own story of growing up on a farm in southwest Georgia during the final violent years of Jim Crow. As a child she dreamed of leaving the South, but when her father was murdered by a white neighbor who was never brought to justice, Sherrod made a vow to stay in Georgia and commit herself to the cause of truth and racial healing. With her husband, Charles, a legend in the civil rights movement, she has devoted her life to empowering poor people and rural communities—Americans who are most in need. The incident that brought Sherrod into the spotlight does not define her life and work, but it strengthens her commitment to stand against the politics of fear and have the courage to hope.
