Sibylline Sisters : Virgil's Presence in Contemporary Women's Writing
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 136.57 $The history of Virgil and his receptions is long and varied. His twentieth-century career transformed his appearance as an anaemic imitator of Homer into the 'Father of the West', speaking above all for the marginalized and exiled. At the turn of the millennium it is women writers who, having been largely absent from the story of Virgil's reception, are for the first time shaping a new aetas Vergiliana by drawing on his poems to speak of their own preoccupations and concerns. Through an analysis of Virgil's presence in the work of contemporary women writers from North America (Joyce Carol Oates, Janet Lembke, Ursula Le Guin), Britain (Margaret Drabble, A. S. Byatt, Ruth Fainlight, Michele Roberts, Carol Ann Duffy, U. A. Fanthorpe, Josephine Balmer), Ireland (Eavan Boland), and continental Europe (Christa Wolf, Helene Cixous, Charlotte Delbo and Monique Wittig), this book identifies a new Virgil: one who speaks in female tones of the anxieties, exclusions, pleasures, and threats of the contemporary world. While each of the female writers included in this volume draws upon her own distinct cultural heritage, Cox focuses on a number of shared themes and values which emerge through their work.Through the works of these modern versions of the Sibyl, Virgil speaks both of explicitly female concerns and wider cultural issues and threats that shadow modern life.

The Sibylline Oracles
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.91 $The Sibyls occupy a conspicuous place in the traditions and history of ancient Greece and Rome. Their fame was spread abroad long before the beginning of the Christian era. Heraclitus of Ephesus, five centuries before Christ, compared himself to the Sibyl "who, speaking with inspired mouth, without a smile, without ornament, and without perfume, penetrates through centuries by the power of the gods." The ancient traditions vary in reporting the number and the names of these weird prophetesses, and much of what has been handed down to us is legendary. But whatever opinion one may hold respecting the various legends, there can be little doubt that a collection of Sibylline Oracles was at one time preserved at Rome. There are, moreover, various oracles, purporting to have been written by ancient Sibyls, found in the writings of Pausanias, Plutarch, Livy, and in other Greek and Latin authors. Whether any of these citations formed a portion of the Sibylline books once kept in Rome we cannot now determine; but the Roman capitol was destroyed by fire in the time of Sulla (B. C. 84), and again in the time of Vespasian (A. D. 69), and whatever books were at those dates kept therein doubtless perished in the flames. It is said by some of the ancients that a subsequent collection of oracles was made, but, if so, there is now no certainty that any fragments of them remain.

A gold mine for students of Classical mythology and early first millennium Jewish, Gnostic and Christian beliefs. Synopsis: THE SIBYLLINE ORACLES are a fascinating blend of mysticism, spirituality, philosophy and history emanating from the depths of antiquity. They were widely referenced by the early Church Fathers, and in spite of their pagan content, almost attained Canonical status. THE SIBYLLINE ORACLES are like a first draft of the Biblical Book of Revelation, and have many of the same characteristics as the prophecies of Nostradamus. Cryptic and Apocalyptic, they present the reader with an occult enigma that has puzzled the world for 2500 years, an enigma still waiting to be solved. This edition includes three versions of the famous CHRISTIAN ACROSTIC, several Appendices and a lengthy Index.

The Method and Message of Jewish Apocalyptic: 200 BC - AD 100 (The Old Testament Library)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.00 $Only a master scholar could present such a comprehensive yet penetrating study as this of the Jewish apocalyptic literature from 200BC to AD100. Russell reviews 17 Jewish writings: The Book of Daniel, I-II Enoch, The Book of Jubilees, The Sibylline Oracles, Books III~V, The Testaments of the 12 Patriarchs, The Psalms of Solomon, The Assumption of Moses, The Martyrdom of Isaiah, The Life of Adam & Eve or The Apocalypse of Moses, The Apocalypse of Abraham, The Testament of Abraham, 2 Esdras & II-III Baruch. He includes material from the Dead Sea Scrolls & a wide variety of related literature. For Jews & Christians alike, this literature is of significance because of its claim to be 'the child of prophecy.' For Christians it has an additional importance. Not only is it, in its teaching, a continuation of the Old Testament, it's also an anticipation of their New Testament. The apocalyptic literature helps bridge the gap between testaments & illustrates significant developments in religious belief, especially of an eschatalogical & messianic kind. For easy study & reference, the volume is in three parts. Part One, 'The Nature & Identity of Jewish Apocalyptic,' sets the literature against the background of the period in which it was written & defines apocalyptic literature. Part Two, discusses 'The Method of Jewish Apocalyptic,' including its emergence from prophecy, examines its form & literary characteristics, & analyzes the peculiar psychology of the writers. Part Three, not only discusses 'The Message of Jewish Apocalyptic,' but assesses it, demonstrating the influence of the apocalyptists on subsequent religious ideas in both Judaism & Christianity.

The Sybilline Oracles (Forgotten Books)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.66 $As the translator notes, this collection should more properly titled 'the Pseudo-Sibylline Oracles'. The original Sibylline Books were closely-guarded oracular scrolls written by prophetic priestesses (the Sibylls) in the Etruscan and early Roman Era as far back as the 6th Century [BC] These books were destroyed, partially in a fire in 83 [BC], and finally burned by order of the Roman General Flavius Stilicho (365-408 [AD]).There is very little knowledge of the actual contents of the original Sibylline Books. The texts which are presented here are forgeries, probably composed between the second to sixth century [AD]. They purport to predict events which were already history or mythological history at the time of composition, as well as vague all-purpose predictions, especially woe for various cities and countries such as Rome and Assyria. They are an odd pastiche of Hellenistic and Roman Pagan mythology, including Homer and Hesiod; Jewish legends such as the Garden of Eden, Noah and the Tower of Babel; thinly veiled references to historical figures such as Alexander the Great and Cleopatra, as well as a long list of Roman Emperors; and last but not least, Gnostic and early Christian homilies and eschatological writings, all in no particular order. There may be actual residue of the original Sibylline books wedged in here and there, but this is dubious. As prophecy, the Pseudo-Sibyllines never rise to the level of Nostradamus. However they are a gold mine for students of Classical mythology and early first millenium Jewish, Gnostic and Christian beliefs. Notable are apocalyptic passages scattered throughout which at times seem like a first draft of the Biblical Book of Revelation. The Pseudo-Sibyllines were referenced by the early Church fathers and in one instance have a Christian code-phrase in successive first letters on each l

The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms: Volume 3: The Phenomenology of Knowledge
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 47.48 $In antiquity a considerable number of books of prophecies went under the general title of "Sibylline Oracles". Rulers as significant as Augustus consulted them in time of danger or crisis for advice and prognoses. Increasing numbers of "ex post facto" prophecies, laying a particular interpretation on facts of recent history, came to be attributed to one of the mysterious Sibyls. Perhaps the most famous of these is the Cumaean Sibyl, who guides the hero in the sixth book of Vergil's "Aeneid" . In fact she was somewhat unusual in her similiarity to other oracular prophetesses, such as the Pythia. For where the latter prophesied in response to particular inquirers, one of the distinguishing characteristics of Sibyls was that they composed discursive verses for distribution to the world at large. This, Professor Parke's last book, which was virtually complete on his death in 1986, is an account of a subject both rarely treated in recent decades and difficult to access for all but the most expert. In its pursuit of the sometimes elusive Sibyls it ranges from Heraclitus to Eusebius, from Archaic Asia Minor to Christian Rome. This book should be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates and academics of classics.
