Sindh Jo Ajrak: Cloth from the Banks of the River Indus
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 60.00 $This is the only major work on Ajrak, the famous double-printed cotton cloth of Sindh, Pakistan. Since the earliest trading contacts between Europe and Asia, this cloth has been appreciated and much sought after. The Venetian Niccolao Manucci wrote in 1659 that it "lasts beyond all cloths that I have used", and the Englishman William Fremlin noted that ".. of all sorts of Indian goods, none are in such request as those of Synda..." Years of painstaking research lies behind this book, which minutely describes the twenty odd laborious stages of producing ajrak. The book is unusual in that it also includes a detailed directory of the craftsmen she found which still practice the traditional craft correctly. With this book, the humble Sindhi craftsmen who have struggled to maintain a long and culturally significant tradition have received their monument. The craft has revived in recent years, and beautiful photographs well document this remarkable textile-making process

Sindh: Stories from a Vanished Homeland
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.69 $In August 1947, India won Independence. At the same time, many families were torn apart and lost their homes forever in the trauma of Partition. Much has been documented about the Punjab Partition experience – but the Sindhis have never spoken. The generation of Sindhis uprooted by Partition was so focussed on succeeding in their new (and often resentful) environment that they did not have the comfort or confidence to pass on their heritage and memories, many painful, to their children. Sindh: Stories from a Vanished Homeland takes us into Sindh – its history, its beauty, different aspects of its culture and traditions, long-forgotten essential facts about Sindhi-ness. Using childhood memories, it reconstructs life in Sindh before and during Partition. While it’s basically a tribute to the community for moving forward in difficult times, leaving behind their cultural heritage to make new lives for themselves – it’s also a wake-up call to the Sindhi community that says, hey, enough time has passed; you can look back without those feelings of hostility and betrayal, to see who you are and where you came from.

Representing Sindh: Images of the British Encounter
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 125.00 $The book is a wide-ranging examination of the way in which the British recorded their engagement with Sindh, then part of undivided India, in visual terms. Following the early years of exploration, conquest and settlement, the British began to record new aspects of the natural and cultural world of Sindh, from architecture and archaeology to arts and crafts and folklore. Illustration of these areas of engagement was at first relatively restricted. However, the rapidly developing technology of the 19th century, particularly photography, facilitated the dissemination of images in increasingly sophisticated ways, while a burgeoning publishing industry and the growth of the periodical press brought illustration to a greatly extended public. With a wealth of illustrations of paintings, drawings, prints and photographs from journals, folios, books and periodicals, this book gives a comprehensive and unrivalled picture of the evolution of the way the British portrayed Sindh to the outside world.Contents:Introduction; 1. Early Views of Sindh; 2. Close Encounters: The Army of the Indus; 3. Enter the Civilians; 4. New Interests; 5. Circulating Images; 6. Heroes and Villains; Conclusion.

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.95 $"Annexation and the Unhappy Valley : The Historical Anthropology of Sindh's Colonization addresses the nineteenth century expansion and consolidation of British colonial power in the Sindh region of South Asia. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach andemploys a fine-grained, nuanced and situated reading of multiple agents and their actions. It explores how the political and administrative incorporation of territory (i.e. annexation) by East India Company informs the conversion of intra-cultural distinctions into socio-historical conflicts among the colonized and colonizers. The book focuses on colonial direct rule, rather than the more commonly studied indirect rule, of South Asia. A Comparative Sociolinguistic Study of Rural and Urban Sindhi
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 32.11 $This thesis is a quantitative study of sociolinguistic variation in the Vicholi (central) dialect of spoken Sindhi in Sindh, a south east province of Pakistan. Two speech communities are investigated, one urban and one rural. By an analysis of the speech of the urban area (Hyderabad) and the rural community (Old Hala) the thesis investigates linguistic change in both speech communities and effects a comparison of the two sets of changes. In the study major social transitional events are identified and it is argued that linguistic variation in the two speech communities is sensitive to such change. The study consists of seven chapters: Chapter one introduces the locale of research and discusses theoretical sociolinguistic concepts and issues of relevance to this study. Also included in this chapter is a socio-historical discussion of Sindh which serves as a background for the reader. Chapter two reviews the diachronic sociolinguistic situation in Sindh - particular emphsis is placed on the inception of Pakistan which is felt to have triggered linguistic variation in the two speech communities. Chapter three is an account of the research methodology. A brief discussion of linguistic change appears here, after which the sampling methods and the method of statistical analysis are discussed. Chapter four, five and six examine the results of the analysis of variation in the use of the three phonological variables - the diphthong, vowel and (r) variables - which have been correlated with the social parameters of age, education and sex. Chapter seven concludes the thesis with a brief summary of the findings.

I Saw Myself: Journeys with Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.24 $I Saw Myself travels to Kutch and Sindh to explore the contemporary presence of the epic love poems of the region, brought to throbbing verse by the masterful eighteenth-century Sufi poet, Shah Latif. As the authors travel to villages to meet folk singers and attend satsangs that stretch through the night, with everyone joining in, they gradually unearth a unique, love-soaked ethos and spirit that continues to survive and thrive in these divisive times. It retells many of the epic stories from Shah Jo Risalo, proposing often surprising interpretations of the legends. It offers deep and subtle insights into Latif's poetic use of the stories, based on research on the ground with singers from the thriving oral traditions of Latif's poetry. It brings into English many of Shah Latif's most visceral and moving poems, spanning a variety of wider spiritual themes such as 'taking the plunge', 'cutting off the head', 'uniting with the Beloved', and so on.
