Art of Collecting: The Spaulding Brothers and Their Legacy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 74.56 $The scions of a prominent Boston family, the brothers William and John Spaulding are remembered today for their legacy as art collectors in the early decades of the twentieth century. It was thanks to them that the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, acquired some of its most enduring masterworks: major European paintings by Goya, Cézanne, van Gogh, Matisse and many others; oils, watercolors and drawings by American masters such as Hopper, Kent and Homer; a remarkable archive of World War I propaganda posters; not to mention its world-renowned collection of Japanese prints. But while the Spaulding name has long been esteemed among art lovers, little has been known about the brothers themselves. Here, historian and collector Frederic A. Sharf sheds light on the men behind these landmark acquisitions, drawing on scores of family papers and archival documents. Handsomely illustrated with artworks from across the spectrum of the Spauldings' collection, as well as with numerous period photographs, this book portrays the crucial role played by collectors in shaping the public trusts that visitors enjoy to this day.

The Rise and Fall of Culture History
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.79 $VJver forty years ago Gordon R. Willey (1953b:361) stated that "[t]he objectives of archeology . . . are approached by the study and manipulation of three basic factors: form, space, and time. " A few years later, Albert C. Spaulding (1960b:439) repeated this thought using different words: "[AJrchaeology can be defined minimally as the study of the interrelation ship of form, temporal locus, and spatial locus exhibited by artifacts. In other words, archaeologists are always concerned with these interrelation ships, whatever broader interests they may have, and these interrelation ships are the special business of archaeology. " Many of the means Americanist archaeologists use to examine formal variation in artifacts and the distribution of that variation across space and through time were formulated early in the twentieth century. The analytical tenets, or principles, underlying the various methods and techniques were formalized and axiomatized in later years such that by the 1930s they con stituted the first formal paradigm for Americanist archaeology—a paradigm commonly termed culture history. This paradigm began with a very specific goal—to document the history of the development of prehistoric cultures in the Americas. Although it fell from favor in the 1960s, many of its central tenets were carried over to newer paradigms and thus continue to be fun damental within Americanist archaeology. With Willey's and Spaulding's conceptions as our guide, we elsewhere reprinted (Lyman et al.

In Search of Ellen Marie
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.36 $When author Rachel Rowley Spaulding first saw a copy of the painting of a fishing boat’s wheelhouse, she passed. Later, when presented with the chance to acquire the original painting, she knew she had to have it. Inspired by the rich colors (and the lure of a great story), she began a quest to find the Ellen Marie, the boat in the painting. This story is really about a boat’s life, as well as the lives of people and their power to affect others. A fisherman in South Bristol, Maine, put his work on hold to chat and share an important clue in Spaulding’s search. Ellen Marie’s captain of the 1960s and ‘70s in New Bedford, Massachusetts challenged her stereotypical thinking about fishermen and took her on an imaginary trip to Georges Bank. Another captain generously shared his time, even inviting her on board a working vessel to clarify her understanding of the fishing process.Ultimately, In Search of Ellen Marie is about being human and experiencing denial when life seems unbelievable. Spaulding learns compassion as she witnesses the grief of loved ones left behind when fishermen lose their lives at sea. It’s about the author’s awe-inspiring realization that she is now a part of a historic era that is endangered—a time of classic wood commercial fishing boats manned by a unique breed of courageous fishermen. It’s the story of connections, passions, and great pride.

How To Write Killer Historical Mysteries: The Art and Adventure of Sleuthing Through the Past
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 46.46 $Emerson, author of the Lady Appleton and Diana Spaulding mystery series, turns her hand to how it’s done in this useful guide to writing historical crime fiction. Drawing on her own works and those of her fellow historical-mystery writers (Kerry Greenwood, Alan Gordon, Carola Dunn, and others), she lays out, in commonsense sequence, the stages of planning and writing a historical mystery. Chapters on choosing setting and character, research, crafting a plot, and selling your book offer much of the same information as similar chapters in other how-to books for mystery writers, but the information is nicely tailored for this particular genre. The core of the book is Emerson’s personal take on writing and selling historical mysteries, but it also includes contributions from over forty other historical mystery writers ―practical advice, anecdotes, and suggestions for research―and input from assorted editors, booksellers, and reviewers. For both historical mystery writers and readers.
