Stories of Faith and Courage from the Korean War
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.06 $In Stories of Faith and Courage from the Korean War Larkin Spivey shows real people fighting and living through a difficult conflict and almost forgotten era of American history. His stories are presented in a daily devotional format with scripture readings each day, revealing both the routine and the astounding ways in which God acts to empower believers and answer doubts. Every person of faith will come closer to God through these pages, and religious skeptics will see many of their own questions explored in depth. Spivey also presents a concise history of the Korean War with overviews, maps, and photographs giving new insights into why America fought this war and the incredible results over the following decades. A Hamster is Missing in Washington, D.C.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.91 $Winner of the 2010 Gold Medal in Humor from the Independent Publishers Book Awards, humorist Ed Spivey Jr. has created a memoir of living, working, and raising kids in the nation's capital during the Bush years, a time of conflict, environmental degradation, and economic hardship (and that's just the part about his family). From a daughter's first dance to a lobbyist's first jail sentence and a cicada's first date (after waiting underground for 17 years, one gets anxious), Spivey captures the times with his well-honed talent for finding the funny. Spivey's book celebrates the uniquely American system of democracy that protects our God-given right to, year after year, do the dumbest things, and the author doesn't miss a one. In these troubled times, laughter is the best medicine, and A Hamster Is Missing in Washington, D.C. is just the prescription you need, unless you have an infection, in which case you'll also need an antibiotic.

The Buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright at Florida Southern College (FL) (Images of America)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.29 $As small Florida Southern College embarked upon an ambitious building program in the 1930s, the serendipitous arrival of Frank Lloyd Wright transformed the future of the school. Pres. Ludd Myrl Spivey was a leader with limitless imagination, and he realized the virtue in bringing an architect of Wright’s renown to Lakeland. Wright’s first visit to the lakeside campus was in 1938. He envisioned a grand 18-unit “Child of the Sun” campus, where buildings would grow from the Florida sand into the light. The buildings are especially suited to the landscape and are connected thematically by a series of covered walkways Wright called the Esplanade. Over the next 20 years, 12 of these unique structures were constructed at Florida Southern, and today they comprise the world’s largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work. The campus attracts thousands of visitors annually, and preservation and restoration projects are ongoing. The Florida Southern College Architectural District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

How Art Made the World
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 63.65 $In the late nineteenth century, the first discoveries of prehistoric painting were greeted with incredulity. How could there have been such deft and skillful artists in the world over 30,000 years ago? Noted art historian Nigel Spivey begins with this puzzle to explore the record of humanity's artistic endeavors and their impact on our own development. Embarking with the motto, Everyone is an artist,” Spivey takes us on a quest to find out when and how we humans began to explore the deepest questions of life, using visual artforms. With the help of vivid color illustrations of some of the world's most moving and enduring works of art, Spivey shows how that art has been used as a means of mass persuasion, essential to the creation of hierarchical societies, and finally, the extent to which art has served as a mode of terror management in the face of our inevitable death. Packed with new insights into ancient wonders and fascinating stories from all around the globe, How Art Made the World is a compelling account of how humans made art and how art makes us human.

The Ancient Olympics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $The word "athletics" is derived from the Greek verb "to struggle or to suffer for a prize." As Nigel Spivey reveals in this engaging account of the Olympics in ancient Greece, "suffer" is putting it mildly. Indeed, the Olympics were not so much a graceful display of Greek beauty as a war fought by other means. Nigel Spivey paints a portrait of the Greek Olympics as they really were--fierce contexts between bitter rivals, in which victors won kudos and rewards, and losers faced scorn and even assault. Victory was almost worth dying for, the author notes, and a number of athletes did just that. Many more resorted to cheating and bribery. Contested always bitterly and often bloodily, the ancient Olympics were no an idealistic celebration of unity, but a clash of military powers in an arena not far removed from the battlefield. The author explores what the events were, the rules for competitors, training and diet, the pervasiveness of cheating and bribery, the prizes on offer, the exclusion of "barbarians," and protocols on pederasty. He also peels back the mythology surrounding the games today and investigates where our current conception of the Olympics has come from and how the Greek notions of beauty and competitiveness have influenced our modern culture. As a Cambridge classicist and athletics coach, Nigel Spivey is uniquely qualified to write this eye-opening account of the Greek Olympics. Anyone interested in the ancient world or in the Olympic games will be fascinated by this revealing history.

How Art Made the World
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 109.31 $Ambitious in scale and far-reaching in scope, "How Art Made the World" is a fresh introduction to the history of art and, through the visual image, the history of humankind. Embarking with the motto 'Everyone is an artist', Nigel Spivey takes us on a quest to find out when and how we humans acquired and then exploited our unique capacity for symbolic representation. In the late nineteenth century, the first discoveries of prehistoric painting were greeted with incredulity. How could there have been such deft and skilful artists in the world over 30,000 years ago? The exploration of this mystery leads to a trail of further intriguing problems. Images came to us before the written word - so how did we use images to tell stories? The representation of our human form has been a preoccupation of artists through the centuries - so why is it that from the very beginning we have preferred images of the body with distorted or exaggerated features? By what means did we define some supernatural presence as immortal and 'invisible', and then attempt to visualize it? And when did our environment become styled as a 'landscape'? In answering these questions and many more, Nigel Spivey takes us on a journey that also reveals how art has been used as a means of mass persuasion, essential to the creation of hierarchical societies, and finally, the extent to which art has served as a mode of 'terror management' in the face of our inevitable death. Packed with new insights into ancient wonders and fascinating stories from all around the globe, "How Art Made the World" is a compelling account of how humans made art and how art makes us human.
