The investigation of late antique statuary lies at the intersection of various scholarly disciplines studying the ancient world. Statues set up in public are an important index of the continuity of civic practices in Late Antiquity; statues in the private sphere demonstrate the longevity of classical mythological themes during the transition to the Middle Ages. In the process, questions not just of the chronology of statues and the formation of statue collections, but also of contextualization in both the private and the public spheres are addressed. Die meisten Forschungsbeiträge zum hellenistischen Herrscherporträt in der klassischen Archäologie konzentrieren sich auf die Benennung und Interpretation der zahlreich überlieferten Porträtköpfe. Eine Gesamtdarstellung der erhaltenen Statuen und Statuetten fehlte jedoch bislang. Gerade sie sind aber von höchstem Interesse, denn nur aus der Gesamtheit der Figur, d.h. aus dem Zusammenspiel von Haltungsschema und ikonographischen Einzelmotiven bis hin zur Körperdarstellung, werden die intendierten Inhalte verständlich. Die Notwendigkeit einer Gesamtdarstellung der statuarischen Herrscherporträts ergibt sich auch aus den Fragen zur Typologie. Dieses Werk stellt sich erstmals der Aufgabe, alle Statuen und Statuetten, die in der Diskussion um das hellenistische Herrscherporträt eine erkennbare Rolle spielen, zusammenzustellen und sie unter verschiedenen Aspekten auszuwerten. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen die Ermittlung der kunsthistorischen Stellung jedes einzelnen Werkes und die Deutung der Figur, die sich aus der ikonographischen und typologischen Untersuchung erschließt. Erst auf dieser Grundlagenarbeit lassen sich nun so entscheidende Fragen wie die der Funktion des Herrscherbildnisses, der Herrscherideologie der Könige, der Formen des Kultes und des Verhältnisses von König und Göttern diskutieren.
