Stedelijk Collection Reflections is published to mark the much-anticipated reopening of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam after an eight-year renovation that also saw it gain a daringly designed new wing, affectionately nicknamed “The Bathtub.” This massive (644-page) publication features 43 fully illustrated essays on the Museum’s famous collection, and thereby provides an overview of over 150 years of international developments in the applied and visual arts, photography, and graphic and industrial design. The contributors--renowned Dutch and international specialists--discuss specific works and significant themes in the collection in detail, and each essay offers a new perspective on important and influential artists, designers or movements. Together, the essays make clear how the special character of the Stedelijk collection--which ranges from Monet, Cézanne and Van Gogh to Gilbert & George and Tracey Emin--has evolved over the years.

The recent reopening of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, saw the inauguration of a spectacular new edifice as well as a new style of museum. The Style of the Stedelijk is a fascinating account of the Museum’s unique relationship with graphic design and its search for a new visual identity. Design historian Frederike Huygen and filmmaker Lex Reitsma trace the process that began in 2008 with the opening of a competition for a new visual identity under the Museum’s then Director, Gijs van Tuyl. The book looks at the participating designers and their proposals and the graphic concept ultimately developed by Mevis & Van Deursen under the Museum’s current General Artistic Director, Ann Goldstein. The collection contains numerous works on paper, including gouaches, watercolors, Futurist book cover designs, sketches, studies and archival photographs. Starting out as a Fluxus-oriented maker of objects and participatory conceptual compositions, Mary Bauermeister (born 1934) had her first solo show at the Stedelijk Museum in 1962. Exhibited alongside her exhibit was a small group survey of American art, which included Robert Rauschenberg's "Goat" paint-sculpture. "I was so flabbergasted by this piece, and I knew: where this is called Art, I will and want to be!" she later recalled. Bauermeister promptly relocated to New York, and quickly fell in with artists such as Duchamp, Warhol and Johns, and also began to make works protesting the Vietnam war and critiquing consumer culture. Her "lens boxes"--wooden or aluminum boxes containing layers of often bubble-like glass with collaged elements--were soon bought up by major American museums, and have become the works for which she is best known today. Here, for the first time, Bauermeister's enigmatic objects are surveyed and contextualized.

The Rijksmuseum (The State Museum) is a Netherlands national museum dedicated to arts and history in Amsterdam. The museum is located at the Museum Square in the borough Amsterdam South, close to the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Concertgebouw. The Rijksmuseum was founded in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808, where it was first located in the Royal Palace and later in the Trippenhuis. The museum has on display 8,000 objects of art and history, from their total collection of 1 million objects from the years 1200-2000, among which are some masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer. The museum also has a small Asian collection which is on display in the Asian pavilion. This book is a great summation of the numerous classics found within it's hallowed halls.

Like Real Violence, Wolfson’s virtual-reality piece shown at the Whitney Biennial, and indeed much of his work in other media, the perspective becomes more complex once the works engage with viewers through movement and sound.With original texts by Jack Bankowsky, Alison Gingeras, and Joey Frank illustrated with details of Wolfson’s other major works and installations—including his critically acclaimed films Animation, masks and Raspberry Poser—this is the most important book on Wolfson’s work to date.

This past year Boris Mikhailov joined the ranks of William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, and Robert Frank as the recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Award, confirming the international stature and critical acclaim he has earned in the last few years with one-person exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, London's Photographer's Gallery, and the DAAD Gallery in Berlin as well as representation in major international surveys such as the Carnegie International. His first book, "Unfinished Dissertation", was published by Scalo in 1997, on the occasion of his receipt of the Albert Renger-Patzsch Prize; in 2000, he published his second book with Scalo, "Case History", and was awarded the photo book award of the International Festival for Photography in Arles, France. Mikhailov also recently accepted an invitation to teach at Harvard University beginning in the fall of 2000. This new book contains a never-before published series of work from the early 1980s: Mikhailov photographed ''The Dancers'' in his hometown in the Ukraine during a period when the former Soviet Union was a reality, before the appearance of Gorbachov and "perestroika". We observe the open-air dancing scene with great astonishment; seeing older and younger people enjoy themselves in a way that might be contradictory to the images we might have about everyday life in the old Soviet Union. These cheerful images remind us how little women and men need to have a good time. An essay by Russian art critic Boris Groys and an exhaustive interview make this volume a must have for readers and libraries interested in contemporary art and photography. Afterall Books' new Exhibition Histories series responds to an increased interest in exhibition history with its inaugural volume on two of the most famous exhibitions of the 1960s: Wim Beeren's Op Losse Schroeven (Stedelijk Museum, 1969) and Harald Szeemann's When Attitudes Become Form (Kunsthalle Berne, also 1969). Installation photographs allow the reader to envision the exhibitions, and chronologies detail the negotiations that steered them.
