Stories from the Stoop
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 43.33 $These Stories will Make you Laugh, Cry, and Want to Change the WorldStories from the Stoop features seven unforgettable true-life adventures; stories told with humor, grit, and candor that will fill you with hope and remind us that we are all in this together.Within these pages, you’ll see life from a new perspective—through the eyes of a young boy— straight from his Bronx stoop. This small piece of real estate made of granite, memories and dreams, is his window to the world.Steve asks himself:How can I overcome the violence on the streets? Will I ever break the chains of being born into my cursed and chaotic family?Am I always going to be an outsider? It was Steve Bernstein's fortuitous and profound friendships—many of which crossed boundaries of race, gender, and religion—that enabled him to navigate these tumultuous questions and develop a hopeful perspective on life.Without his dog, Wolf, Steve would not have survived the wrath of a street gang. On the day Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed, it was Anthony who recognized how dangerous it was for Steve (the only white kid on the basketball court that April evening) to be out shooting hoops. An epic bike trip with Joe breathed life into Steve's dream to be free, a lifelong friendship that only 9/11 could extinguish.Stories from the Stoop is a triumphant and tender coming of age journey that will capture your heart and feed your soul. Steve's voice, spare and street smart, resonates across age and ethnicity, to offer the possibility that life circumstances need not predict destiny. All you have to do is find enough courage, compassion and chutzpah to win out.Come, join Steve on the stoop and find out what it means to truly be free.Grab this book now and get lost in the vivid stories of love, life, acceptance, and freedom.

Front Stoops in the Fifties : Baltimore Legends Come of Age
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.25 $Front Stoops in the Fifties recounts the stories of some of Baltimore's most famous personalities as they grew up during the "decade of conformity." Such familiar names as Jerry Leiber, Nancy Pelosi, Thurgood Marshall, and Barry Levinson figure prominently in Michael Olesker’s gripping account, which draws on personal interviews and journalistic digging.Olesker marks the end of the fifties with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. "It’s as if millions will suddenly decide to act out their anxieties and their rage, as if Kennedy’s murder exposed some hypocrisy at the heart of the American dream," he writes. Focusing on the period leading up to this turning point in U.S. history, Olesker looks to the individuals living through the changes that were just beginning to surface and would later come to prominence in the sixties. The fifties are often remembered with longing as a more innocent time. But it was also a suffocating time for many. Alongside innocence was ignorance. Olesker tells the story of Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi, daughter of the mayor, who grew up in a political home and eventually became the first woman Speaker of the House. Thurgood Marshall, schooled in a racially segregated classroom, went on to argue Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka before the U.S. Supreme Court and rewrite race-relations law. Even the music changed. Olesker’s doo-wop portrait of Baltimore is nostalgic, but it has a hard edge.

Cookies, Coleslaw, and Stoops : The Influence of Dutch on the North American Languages
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.08 $In 1609, the first Dutch settlers arrived in America and established trading posts, small towns, and forts up and down what we now call the Hudson River. To this day, American children are taught the thrilling history of the transformation of this settlement, New Netherland, and its capital, New Amsterdam, from landmark port into present-day New York State and the island of Manhattan. But, the Dutch legacy extended far beyond New York, as Cookies, Coleslaw and Stoops reveals. From Santa Claus (after the Dutch folklore saint Sinterklaas) and his sleigh (the pronunciation of the Dutch slee is almost identical) to a dumbhead talking poppycock, the contributions of the Dutch language to American English are indelibly embedded to some of our most vernacular terms and expressions. The menu in most of our restaurants sports some originally Dutch names, and even our dollar is named after a Dutch coin (daalder). In this captivating volume, the renowned linguist Nicoline van der Sijs glosses over 300 Dutch loan words like these that travelled to the New World on board the Dutch ship the Halve Maan, captained by Henry Hudson, which dropped anchor in Manhattan more than 400 years ago. Surprisingly, the Dutch also gave several Native American languages words for everyday things like “pants”, “cat” and “turkey”. Lively and accessible, the information presented in this volume charts the journey of these words into the American territory and languages, from more obscure uses which maybe have survived in only regional dialects to such ubiquitous contributions to our language like Yankee, cookie, and dope. Each entry marks the original arrival of its term into American English and adds up-to-date information on its evolving meaning, etymology, and regional spread. Not to be missed by anyone with a passion for the history behind our everyday expressions, Cookies, Coleslaw and Stoops is the perfect gift for the linguistic adventurer in us all.

East 7th Street stoop portraits:: East Village NYC 1986-1989; Photographs by Addison Thompson [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.95 $In the late afternoon, the buildings blocked the sun and in the dim light, my neighbors would come to sit on the steps of the stoops on East 7th Street between Avenues C and D. This block is known locally as “the old Doctors' block” with Renaissance Revival tenement buildings and a picturesque row of painted-brick brownstones. The block survived the terrible devastation of the surrounding blocks, as the neighborhood degenerated into a ghetto, due to urban decay and arson during the 1970s. These images first appeared in 1987 in "The New Gay Art" by Vince Aletti. Several of these images appeared in the documentary film “7th Street” by actor and auteur Josh Pais.
