Neuware - Dies sind die letzten von insgesamt fast 70 Streichquartetten, die Haydn schuf. Ursprünglich sollte es - wie so oft zuvor - eine Serie von sechs Quartetten werden. Doch war Haydn um die Entstehungszeit 1803 zu krank, um den Kompositionsauftrag des Fürsten Lobkowitz ganz umzusetzen. So veröffentlichte er als op. 77 nur zwei vollständige Quartette. Später ließ er als op. 103 zusätzlich noch ein unvollendetes Werk drucken, das aus zwei Mittelsätzen besteht. Vielsagend fügte er dem Druck folgende Worte hinzu: 'Hin ist alle meine Kraft, alt und schwach bin ich.' Musikalisch sind diese Werke alles andere als kraftlos. Sie stellen geradezu einen Höhenflug des gereiften Komponisten dar. Op. 77,2 wurde sogar Haydns 'schönstes Streichquartett' genannt._
