Sophie Taeuber-Arp: Designer, Dancer, Architect
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 41.73 $Swiss-born artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889–1943) ranks among the pioneers of the classical avant-garde in the first half of the twentieth century. The work of this remarkably versatile and gifted artist covers the universal range of the modernist movement, from applied and fine art to dance and architecture, from interior design to teaching. This richly illustrated volume chronicles Taeuber-Arp’s multifaceted career—with an emphasis on her design and architectural oeuvre.Featuring rarely seen architectural drawings and furniture designs, Sophie Taeuber-Arp traces the artist’s life from her beginnings as a dance student of Rudolf von Laban and her involvement in the Dada movement in Zurich to her marriage to French sculptor Jean Arp and her subsequent association with the Swiss Werkbund, to her eventual flight from the Nazis in France and return to Switzerland. Sophie Taeuber - Arp - Today is Tomorrow
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 157.36 $Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889–1943) ranks among the pioneers of the early twentieth century’s classical avant-garde. In addition to studying dance at Rudolf von Laban’s dance school, she was educated as an artist at the School of Applied Arts in St. Gallen, Switzerland; at Wilhelm von Debschitz’s teaching and experimental workshop in Munich; and the School of Applied arts in Hamburg. After becoming involved with the Dadaists, she taught textile design at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, then moved to France to live and work in her self-designed studio home until she had to flee from the German occupation in 1940. Remarkably versatile and immensely gifted, Taeuber-Arp’s work covers the universal range of the modernist movement―applied and fine art, dance, architecture, interior design, and teaching. Accompanying a retrospective exhibition at Aargauer Kunsthaus in Switzerland and Kunsthalle Bielefeld in Germany, this book shows the entire range of Taeuber-Arp’s creativity and her mastery of material, shape, and color, as well as her inventiveness and interdisciplinary thinking and approach. It features an abundance of works drawn from private collections that have either not yet been shown to the public or not displayed for many years, and the accompanying essays from leading scholars treat Taeuber-Arp’s work in both the fine and applied art in equal measure. Richly illustrated with three hundred images―the majority in color―Sophie Taeuber-Arp is the most comprehensive book on this extraordinary artist ever published in English.

Intimate Collaborations: Kandinsky and Münter, Arp and Taeuber
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 56.14 $This compelling examination of the work and lives of Expressionist artists Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter and Dadaists Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber illuminates the roles of gender and the applied arts in abstraction’s early days. Both couples, like Expressionism and Dada more generally, strived to transcend the fragmented individualism promoted by capitalism. Through abstraction and by unsettling the boundaries between the decorative and fine arts, they negotiated tensions between the philosophical and commercial aspects of their production. Both pairs were feminist―the women ambitious and the men supportive of their work―but theirs was a feminism that embraced differences between the sexes. This innovative look at the personal relationships of two influential artist couples shows how everyday life―mundane concerns along with spiritual and intellectual endeavors―informed the development of abstraction.

Briefe 1905-1942
