Taiwan's Imagined Geography : Chinese Colonial Travel Writing And Pictures, 1683-1895
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.41 $Until 300 years ago, the Chinese considered Taiwan a "land beyond the seas," a "ball of mud" inhabited by "naked and tattooed savages." The incorporation of this island into the Qing empire in the seventeenth century and its evolution into a province by the late nineteenth century involved not only a reconsideration of imperial geography but also a reconceptualization of the Chinese domain. The annexation of Taiwan was only one incident in the much larger phenomenon of Qing expansionism into frontier areas that resulted in a doubling of the area controlled from Beijing and the creation of a multi-ethnic polity. The author argues that travelers' accounts and pictures of frontiers such as Taiwan led to a change in the imagined geography of the empire. In representing distant lands and ethnically diverse peoples of the frontiers to audiences in China proper, these works transformed places once considered non-Chinese into familiar parts of the empire and thereby helped to naturalize Qing expansionism.By viewing Taiwan-China relations as a product of the history of Qing expansionism, the author contributes to our understanding of current political events in the region.

Taiwan's Statesman: Lee Teng-hui and Democracy in Asia
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 55.14 $A well-known observer of Taiwan and Asian history and culture provides an insightful biography of Lee Teng Hui, the pro-democracy statesman and former president of the Republic of China. As head of the Taiwanese government from 1988 to 2000, Lee managed, without violence or major civil unrest, to reform the authoritarian state into a constitutional democracy with a multi-party political system. This examination of Lee's success puts to rest the idea that Asian values support only authoritarian regimes and reject human rights and political democracy in favor of economic success and military power.Richard C. Kagan describes in rich detail Lee's struggle to reinvent Taiwan's culture and political system by advocating an independent sovereign nation with universal values of human rights, democracy, freedom, and economic justice. His book offers new insights into the role Lee played in the still volatile Taiwan Strait crisis and how Lee's diplomatic skills used the crisis to break free of the "One China" straitjacket of the Shanghai Communiqué of 1972 while avoiding open warfare with the People's Republic of China. The author argues that Taiwan is a vital part of America's national security interests in Asia and that the loss of Taiwan to Mainland China would seriously damage American economic and military power in Asia. He calls Lee's life a beacon for people looking for new ways to promote democracy and sovereignty and intends this biography of Lee's life to highlight the statesman's significant contributions, until now little known or misunderstood in the United States and Europe.

Taiwan*s Application To Gatt/wto: Significance Of Multilateralism For An Unrecognized State
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 65.56 $Revealing a powerful economic motive behind Taiwan's 1990 application for GATT membership, CHO questions those who interpreted it solely as a political move designed to break that island nation's diplomatic isolation. Flourishing economically since the 1950s despite non-GATT membership, matters changed for Taiwan in the 1980s when it became both big and small. As a big trader, its dual trade regime was no longer tolerated, while as a small economy with little political clout, Taiwan was pushed to liberalize its trade practices by bilateral pressures. Taiwan believes that the most-favored nation principle and diffuse reciprocity embedded in GATT/WTO's multilateralism will sheild Taiwan from the pernicious effects of bilateral asymmetry while simultaneously providing it with more international living space.

Taiwan: You can get to all attractions by your own self.
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.86 $Have you ever seen a tourist at a subway station who is asking 23 times of the direction for his/her destination? Are you sure to find your hotel with the limited information of “10 minutes from the exit M6 of MRT Taipei Main Station”? Which way will you take when you come out of the exit M2 of the bustling metro station? This book introduces 20 attractions of Taiwan including 18 must-visits in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. Alishan National Scenic Area and Sun Moon Lake, the 2 giant attractions in the central district of Taiwan, will follow them.As a backpacker to the world, I especially emphasize the way to the attractions of Taiwan in this book. In addition to the detailed information on the ways to the must-visits, you will find maps and photos taken every nook and corner. For example, this book introduces Shifen, one of the best attractions in Taiwan, through a map as below.“Take a train to Ruifang at Taipei Railway Station as indicated by the first red arrow on the map, and transfer to Pingxi Line bound for Shifen. The second red arrow shows the way between Ruifang and Shifen. There are 3 kinds of train at Taipei Main Station. However, for Ruifang where you have to transfer train to Pingxi Line, you don’t need to take an express line or even a normal one. Commuter train, the cheapest one, might be enough. For the commuter train bound for Ruifang, go down to the basement of Taipei Railway Station, and wait for the train at platform No. 4B.”In addition to the arrows and explaining boxes on the map, photos taken on the way from the starting point until the destination will give you full confidence when you try the wonderful attractions by yourself.Keep this book in your pack and fly to the fantastic city of Taipei. Then, this book will shed light on your way to the must-visits. You need neither to chase after a guide nor to ask passers-by for your destination. You can get them all by your own self.
