High Mountains & Cold Seas: A Biography of H.W. Tilman
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 6.17 $A splendid biography of this very remarkable man, giving us not only the high adventures, vividly described, but also the man himself in his strange complexity. High Mountains and Cold Seas: The life of H.W. `Bill Tilman: soldier, mountaineer, navigator (H.W. Tilman - The Collected Edition)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.07 $Harold William 'Bill' Tilman (1898-1977) was among the greatest adventurers of his time, a pioneering mountaineer and navigator who held exploration above all else. The son of a Liverpool sugar importer, Tilman joined the army at seventeen and was twice awarded the Military Cross for bravery during WWI. After the war Tilman left for Africa, establishing himself as a coffee grower. He met Eric Shipton and they began their famed mountaineering partnership, traversing Mount Kenya and climbing Kilimanjaro . Turning to the Himalaya , Tilman went on two Mount Everest expeditions, reaching 27,000 feet without oxygen in 1938. In 1936 he made the first ascent of Nanda Devi , the highest mountain climbed until 1950. He was the first European to climb in the remote Assam Himalaya , delved into Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor and explored extensively in Nepal, all the while developing a mountaineering style characterised by its simplicity and emphasis on exploration. It was perhaps logical that Tilman would eventually buy the pilot cutter Mischief , not with the intention of retiring from travelling, but to access remote mountains. For twenty-two years he sailed Mischief and her successors in search of them-to Patagonia , where he made the first easterly crossing of the ice cap, to Baffin Island to make the first ascent of Mount Raleigh , to Greenland , Spitsbergen , and islands in the far Southern Ocean, before disappearing in the South Atlantic in 1977. J.R.L. Anderson 's High Mountains and Cold Seas draws on a wealth of personal correspondence between Tilman-a compulsive letter writer and his immediate family and close friends, crafting the first detailed account of the extraordinary life of this remarkable but very private individual.

The Ascent of Rum Doodle
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.14 $First published in 1956, The Ascent of Rum Doodle quickly became a mountaineering classic. As an outrageously funny spoof about the ascent of a peak in the Himalayas, many thought it was inspired by the 1953 conquest of Everest. But Bowman had drawn on the flavor and tone of earlier adventures, of Bill Tilman and his 1937 account of the Nandi Devi expedition. The book’s central and unforgettable character, Binder, is one of the finest creations in comic literature.

Kettner pounds out the beat while belting out his lyrics about love, lust, and misadventure; He

The Hitler Salute
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 114.08 $Sometimes the smallest detail reveals the most about a culture. In The Hitler Salute, sociologist Tilman Allert uses the Nazi transformation of a simple human interaction--the greeting--to show how a shared gesture can usher in the conformity of an entire society. Made compulsory in 1933, the Hitler slaute developed into a daily reflex in a matter of months, and became the norm in schools, at work, among friends, and even at home. Adults denounced neighbors who refused to raise their arms, and children were given tiny Hitler dolls with movable right arms so they could practice the salute. And, of course, each use the greeting invested Hitler and his regime with a divine aura. The first examination of a phenomenon whose significance has long been underestimated, The Hitler Salute offers new insight into how the Third Reich's rituals of consent paved the way for the wholesale erosion of social morality.

Resource Competition and Community Structure
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 67.62 $One of the central questions of ecology is why there are so many different kinds of plants and animals. Here David Tilman presents a theory of how organisms compete for resources and the way their competition promotes diversity. Developing Hutchinson's suggestion that the main cause of diversity is the feeding relations of species, this book builds a mechanistic, resource-based explanation of the structure and functioning of ecological communities. In a detailed analysis of the Park Grass Experiments at the Rothamsted Experimental Station in England, the author demonstrates that the dramatic results of these 120 years of experimentation are consistent with his theory, as are observations in many other natural communities. The consumer-resource approach of this book is applicable to both animal and plant communities, but the majority of Professor Tilman's discussion concentrates on the structure of plant communities. All theoretical arguments are developed graphically, and formal mathematics is kept to a minimum. The final chapters of the book provide some testable speculations about resources and animal communities and explore such problems as the evolution of "super species," the differences between plant and animal community diversity patterns, and the cause of plant succession.

Ice With Everything
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 104.65 $For those who enjoy a bit of old fashioned adventure and a sea story it is hard to go past Mr. Bill Tilman, a classic adventurer right up to his last days. His love for mountaineering, ocean sailing and the old English pilot cutters speaks clearly to us in this interesting little volume. Mr. Tilman wrote seven books about his mountain travels, and eight books on his years sailing to extreme climates. One of the last 'gentleman adventurers', Bill Tilman's stoic and courageous exploits have earned him a place of honor as one of the greatest in the pantheon of explorers. Once when asked the question what does one need to do to have an adventure Mr. Tilman replied in his succinct manner, "Put on a good pair of boots and walk out the door." "Ice With Everything" covers three voyages Mr. Tilman undertook to Greenland in 1971 to 1973, then in his early 70's, with the second seeing the loss of his second cutter, SeaBreeze. Not an easy man to deter, within one winter he had purchased a new old boat, refitted her and was on his way back to Greenland to complete the goal he had set himself. Mr. Tilman's adventures are brought to life through his simple narrative style, with never a cross word for anyone no matter what the disaster, a disdain for superlatives, a wry wit (if not always p.c.) and erudite quotations. His one line aphorisms scattered throughout, such as "a well-filled stomach is the great thing, all else is luxury," and "to enquire is neither a disaster nor a disgrace", reveal his joy of a simple adventurous life. "Ice With Everything" makes for an uplifting read.

An Introduction to the Theory of Mechanism Design
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 76.53 $What is the best way to auction an asset? How should a group of people organize themselves to ensure the best provision of public goods? How should exchanges be organized? In An Introduction to the Theory of Mechanism Design, Tilman Börgers addresses these questions and more through an exploration of the economic theory of mechanism design. Mechanism design is reverse game theory. Whereas game theory takes the rules of the game as a given and makes predictions about the behavior of strategic players, the theory of mechanism design goes a step further and selects the optimal rules of the game. A relatively new economic theory, mechanism design studies the instrument itself as well as the results of the instrument. An Introduction to the Theory of Mechanism Design provides rigorous but accessible explanations of classic results in the theory of mechanism design, such as Myerson's theorem on expected revenue maximizing auctions, Myerson and Satterthwaite's theorem on the impossibility of ex post efficient bilateral trade with asymmetric information, and Gibbard and Satterthwaite's theorem on the non-existence of dominant strategy voting mechanisms. Börgers also provides an examination of the frontiers of current research in the area with an original and unified perspective that will appeal to advanced students of economics.
