Transvestites and Transsexuals; Toward a Theory of Cross-gender Behavior
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.00 $The objective of this book is to propose a theory of transvestism and secondary transsexualism, and to provide information concerning these behaviors. My view of these topics is much like that of Benjamin (1966) and nearly all other gender researchers. It holds that a syndrome of similar behaviors can be identified, ranging from fetishism through transvestism, transgenderism, and secondary transsexualism. But de scription is one thing and explanation of causes is another. I agree with other gender researchers (e. g. , Green & Money, 1969; Stoller, 1985c) who have concluded that the causes of transvestism and transsexualism re main largely unknown. But the fact that we cannot fully explain the origins of transvestism or secondary transsexualism does not mean that a comprehensive theory is impossible. Indeed, excellent theoretical statements have been proposed concerning each of these topics (Ban croft, 1972; Buckner, 1970; Buhrich & McConaghy, 1977a; Money & Ehrhardt, 1972; Ovesey & Person, 1973, 1976; Person & Ovesey, 1974a,b; Stoller, 1968a, 1974, 1985c). It is with considerable respect, therefore, that we acknowledge both the strong shoulders on which we stand, and also the more practical fact that we have drawn heavily upon the many contributions of these researchers. The approach I have adopted has the same scientific difficulties that confronted all of these previous workers.

Transvestites (New Concepts in Human Sexuality)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 555.66 $Transvestites are women and men who feel reluctant and even refuse to dress in the clothing of their own sex. For them, the inherent drive to cross-dress is often more powerful than sexual drive itself. This phenomenon has often been confronted with both ignorance and prejudice. Transvestites have been subjected not only to discrimination but also to criminal prosecution for following what, for them, was an inborn inclination. Dr. Hirschfeld created this book to establish a body of knowledge about an often misunderstood topic and to strip away long held prejudices. This classic gender study, first published in Germany in 1910 and newly translated, explores all aspects of transvestism: social, physical and emotional.Transvestism is a firmly rooted psychological phenomenon and cultural tradition, in spite of religious, legal and social sanctions. Written 80 years ago, this book was and still is the most comprehensive treatise on the subject of transvestism, illustrating that while styles have changed, the enthusiasm of devotees has not.Part I introduces transvestites with sympathetic, often amusing case histories, defines symptoms, and explains their basic, erotic character.Part II explores the forceful drive to cross-dress and examines clothing as a form of expression of personality.Part III addresses the historical, legal, anthropological, and social aspects of transvestism, and includes fascinating chapters on transvestism as it relates to the Bible, law and criminality, and women in the military. This book conclusively demonstrates that transvestism is a natural extension of the infinite variations of human personality.

The Transvestite Memoirs of the Abbe de Choisy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.82 $Memoirs of the courtier and abbot whose cross-dressing brought him into conflict with French society. By a whim of his mother, Francois Timoleon de Choisy—better known as the Abbé de Choisy—was dressed as a girl until the age of 18. After a short spell in male attire he became, by all accounts, the classic transvestite—a male heterosexual who never attempted to disguise his biological sex while going about in public in full female attire. Choisy's fascination with feminine accoutrements made him something of an expert on women's fashions, and prominent society women even brought their daughters to him for advice. His increasingly extravagant toilettes and exhibitionist behavior eventually earned him a public rebuke and exile from Paris. This study recounts the scandalous and entertaining escapades for which Choisy is best known today in a light, intimate, and accessible style. These authentic memoirs provide a firsthand account of manners and morals in late 17th-century society as well as remarkably exact portraits of his contemporaries, constituting a remarkable document in the history of transvestism.

The Transsexual/Transvestite Issue (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.57 $Paperback. Contributors to this special issue challenge the racialization, relegation, and invisibilization of trans experience. While "transsexual" and "transvestite" were central categories that organized trans experience across a wide array of geographies, genders, and racial and class coordinates during the twentieth century, these categories have receded into the background of Anglophone activism and academia, the authors argue. Rendered anachronistic, both groups are more vulnerable than ever to long-standing stigmas with a new temporal twist. Just as importantly, colonial spatial logic has also exported transsexuality and transvestism out of the global north, embedding them as racial markers of gender in the global south. In an effort to promote ostensibly more open-ended and proliferating models of gender variance, the authors seek a critical reevaluation of transsexuals and transvestites, at once temporal, geographical, and political. Lieutenant Nun: Memoir of a Basque Transvestite in the New World
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.31 $Born in 1585, Catalina de Erauso led one of the most wildly fantastic lives of any woman in history. Refusing to be regimented into the quiet habits of a nun's life, she escaped from a Basque convent at age fourteen dressed as a man, and continuing her deception, ventured to Peru and Chile as a soldier in the Spanish army. After mistakenly killing her own brother in a duel, she roamed the Andean highlands, becoming a gambler and a killer, and always just evading the grasp of the law. Distinguished for her fighting skills and cursed with a quick temper, Catalina de Erauso spent much of her life balancing precariously between valor and villainy. One of the earliest known autobiographies by a woman, Lieutenant Nun offers a portrait of a bold young girl who defied her society's gender roles, yet remained committed to its service as a participant in the conquest of the Americas. She is an adored folkloric hero of the Spanish-speaking world, and this delightful translation introduces a new audience to the audacious escapades of Catalina de Erauso, the Lieutenant Nun.

Andy Warhol: Ladies and Gentlemen
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 67.45 $In 1975, Andy Warhol undertook a series of portraits of New York City transvestites, most of whom were recruited by Bob Colacello from a club called The Gilded Grape. The method for making these portraits followed Warhol’s customary formula: a Polaroid portrait of the sitter was silkscreened onto a canvas, which was then embellished with synthetic polymer paint in a bright array of red, pinks, yellows and pastels. Warhol’s transvestites are portrayed in a fairly classical fashion, neck-up, often at a three-quarter angle, and beckon at the viewer with a variety of expressions, from the plaintive to the coquettish to the triumphant. This beautifully produced monograph features 40 spot-varnished color reproductions of the Ladies and Gentlemen series, and reprints the Italian film-maker and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini’s fascinating and unusual take on Warhol and on the series.

The Third Sex: Kathoey: Thailand's Ladyboys
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 5.55 $Through the lives of three kathoey, male transvestites, this introduction to transgender in Thailand places a cultural, historical, religious, biological, and psychological emphasis on international traditions of sexuality. A fascinating anthropological and sociological exploration, the context of transgender is detailed through the challenges and joys found in Manat, Lek, and Akorn as they travel through the social rites of passage to become kathoeys. As a part of the cultural landscape of Thailand, the kathoeys are a modern expression of an archaic tradition, and through these personal stories a wider discussion of transgender and the existence of a “third sex” in international societies emerges.

Cycle of Violence
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.85 $Since winning the Turner Prize in 2003, the celebrated transvestite potter Grayson Perry (born 1960) has become something of a national institution in the U.K. In 1992, some while before he became known, Atlas Press published Perry’s sole graphic novel, Cycle of Violence, the nightmarish tale of a young cyclist and transvestite, now reprinted in a handsome hardcover edition. Of the work’s genesis, Perry wrote: “When I was 12 or 13 I drew a series of short comic strip adventures featuring an idealized male hero. When puberty hit me those boys’ own tales became increasingly kinky, involving much cross-dressing and bondage. Sadly these reports from my young subconscious were lost in the upheavals of adolescence. Twenty years later I drew Cycles of Violence while facing up to becoming a father myself, and once again my imagination became an open wound.”

Pirates, Punks & Politics
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 73.03 $FC Sankt Pauli ? the football club in the red-light district of Hamburg; a transvestite chairman; terraces populated by punks, pimps and prostitutes; a club run by anarchists, united under the skull and crossbones flag. This is the clich(r) that has been lazily peddled, one which attracts clueless stag parties from the Reeperbahn to the Millerntor stadium. But itOCOs not the real St Pauli. In Pirates, Punks & Politics author Nick Davidson puts the record straight, intermingling the history of FC St. Pauli, and the district it represents, with an account of his own involvement with the club. Back in 2007 Davidson travelled with his father to watch his first game at the Millerntor. What he found reinforced his faith in football. This book goes beyond the stereotype to seek out the real St. Pauli ? a club with a passionate, left-wing fan base that has made a stand against, fascism, racism, sexism and both in football and wider society. As the author and countless others have discovered, the Millerntor is also a place which welcomes with open arms fans seeking an alternative to the rabid commercialisation of football elsewhere, encouraging them to stay for hours after the final whistle and immerse themselves in the vibrant fan culture. Read this book and fall in love with a different kind of football. All the authorOCOs royalties will be donated to the 1910.V. Museum, FC St. Pauli museum project."
