Beauty: Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.23 $Beauty--the book, born out of Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum's 2015 Triennial of the same name, curated by Andrea Lipps and Ellen Lupton--showcases some of the most exciting and provocative design created around the globe during the past three years. These pages aim not to emphasize the hidden beauty in the everyday--a beloved teapot or favorite shoe--but to locate transformational beauty in contemporary design that is exuberant, ethereal, atmospheric, experiential, exceptional or sublime. Sixty-two designers represent a vast range of disciplines from architecture, fashion, digital, graphic, and product design, to interiors, hair, nail and lighting design. The objects featured cause us to take pause, catch our breath and get lost in our pursuit to understand or explain them. Designed by the innovative Kimberly Varella, the book is itself a tactile, fluid and provocative interpretation of beauty. Varella's design provides unexpected points of entry, playing with the concepts of beauty by using reflective surfaces, hot pink thread weaving pages together and a "heart" of the book, from which all else flows. Ethereal, Intricate, Extravagant, Transformative, Transgressive, Elemental and Emergent Beauty are the seven themes. Each section includes the individual designers in conversation with the curators about her or his process and beauty's differing forms, punctuated by rich galleries of their work, generating the ultimate feast for the senses.

Ecotopia: The Second ICP Triennial of Photography and Video
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 64.17 $When the International Center of Photography launched Strangers, its first Triennial, in 2003, its curators wrote that their goal was "to demonstrate photography's incomparable richness as a visual medium--in the form of still photographs, video, sculptural objects, and installation pieces. The result is a dynamic coherence that results as much from a dialogue between individual works as from curatorial intention." This second time out, in a period of rampant natural disasters and concerns about global environmental change, they have shifted their attention from strangers, from our relationships with one another, to home, to our relationships with the earth. Ecotopia, brings readers the natural world through the eyes and lenses of some of the most interesting and engaging photographers working today. These 30 international artists shatter stereotypes of landscape and nature imagery to examine new concepts of the natural sphere occasioned by twenty-first-century technologies. They capture our destructive engagement with the environment and develop visions of our future, both better and worse. Ecotopia considers nature in the broadest sense, and offers new perspectives on the planet that sustains, enchants and, increasingly, frightens.

Loose Ends
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 45.84 $Maria Giuseppina Grasso Cannizzo exhibited at the Venice Biennial in 2004 and 2008, and was honored by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 2012. That same year she won a gold medal for her life’s work at the Milan Triennial, and has been nominated twice for the Mies van der Rohe Prize. Nevertheless, she’s still considered an insider’s tip. She lives in Vittoria, a small city in southern Sicily, where she realizes the majority of her architecture, including many transformations of historical buildings, single and multiple-family housing, or projects such as the control tower in Marina di Ragusa. Grasso Cannizzo’s special design methods are based on her analyses of the urban context and the landscape, as well as her examination of the specific “story” behind each project. She translates the knowledge gained into minimal, self-aware, and sometimes radical concepts, which are ultimately always open to any changes that life and the passage of time may bring. At the same time, this first comprehensive monograph is also a conceptual manifesto by Grasso Cannizzo. Collected in a black box, loose prints provide insight into her most important buildings and make it possible to see the architect’s general design methods.

Zodiaque: Making Medieval Modern, 1951â"2001
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 47.52 $Begun in 1951 by monks at the abbey of La Pierre-qui-Vire in Burgundy, the Zodiaque publications consisted of a triennial journal and multiple series of books, including the most famous: La Nuit des temps. The editors’ goal was to renew sacred art for twentieth-century viewers by making connections between the direct, “primitive” character of pre-Gothic religious art and an emerging modernist aesthetic. Focusing almost exclusively on Romanesque architecture and sculptural decoration, Zodiaque revived the style’s richness and variety, bringing to light monuments lost to popular currency and visually shaping their reception with a new eye to graphic forms. What captured the public imagination and brought the Zodiaque books to international attention was their primary feature: striking black-and-white photogravures. These powerful images went beyond documentary photography to become collectible graphic prints, shaping the plastic form seen by the camera into a fresh two-dimensional artwork. In Zodiaque, Janet Marquardt explores the motivations, philosophies, and workshop practices of Éditions Zodiaque and how they affected the scholarly discourse on medieval art and architecture.
