Visiting The Grand Canyon : Views Of Early Tourism
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.84 $The Colorado River began carving a course to create the Grand Canyon some four to six million years ago, but organized tourism to the natural wonder is fairly young, geologically speaking. Getting to the view along and below the rim has not always been as convenient as packing up the family car and hitting the road. The El Tovar Hotel, celebrating its centennial in 2005, had just opened to lodgers when the Canyon was declared a National Monument in 1908. Between the 1890s and the 1920s, horses, mules, river rafts, stagecoaches, and later railroads and automobiles permitted increasing access to the area. Recreation areas, businesses catering to tourists, and federal preservation programs would eventually mark the Grand Canyon as the ultimate American travel destination.

Visiting Mrs. Nabokov, and other excursions
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 69.00 $These essays by Martin Amis provide portraits of contemporaries and mentors: Larkin and Rushdie, Burgess, Ballard, Nicholson Baker and John Updike. From across the Atlantic, he exposes the double-think of nuke-speak in Washington and the dementia of a Republican convention in New Orleans. And then there is sport. Checking out darts' disastrous attempt to clean itself up, Amis sneaks tips from the world number one, and witnesses the sad and sudden decline of Keith Deller. An account of dirty tricks in world chess reveals, "It's not an art. It's a fight." And so it is when he takes on the snooker savvy of Julian "Barometer" Barnes, or indulges in some brisk, but vicious poker with Al Alvarez and David Mamet. "Sex" without Madonna, expulsion from school, the Notting Hill Carnival, a Stones gig that should have been gagged - it's all here, as well as on set with Robocop or set-down with Sabatini. Martin Amis is the author of "The Rachel Papers", "Success", "Other People", "Dead Babies", "The Moronic Inferno", "Money", "Einstein's Monsters", "London Fields" and "Time's Arrow".

Forty-six stories in all, far and away the most comprehensive volume in her long career, showcasing her crisp, elegant prose, her dark wit, and her uncanny ability to illuminate our world through characters and situations that feel at once peculiar and foreign and disturbingly familiar. Visiting Picasso: The notebooks and letters of Roland Penrose [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.33 $Drawn from the private notebooks and correspondence of Roland Penrose, an intriguing firsthand account of the life and personality of Pablo Picasso.Published here for the first time, these lively writings bring to life with a rare vividness the work, ideas, and milieu of Roland Penrose's friend—and the subject of his much-acclaimed 1958 biography—Pablo Picasso. What makes the notebooks and correspondence so important is also what makes them so exhilarating and fresh. They are not reconstructions after the event, filtered through memory or rephrased with an eye to literary style. The immediacy of the jottings gives the reader the uncanny sensation of actually being present during Penrose's frequent encounters with Picasso and his circle—at home with the artist, at bullfights, at the beach, in the studio. The book is filled with anecdotes, incidents, sharp details, and actual conversations that are unconstrained by deference, objectivity, or the need for discretion. Confidential, off-the-record remarks made by the artist's family, associates, and former lovers are all here, as are Penrose's own candid observations of Picasso's behavior. Fascinating descriptions of Picasso at work afford rare insights into the making of his masterpieces, including Guernica and other great works up to the time of his death. Some sixty photographs—mostly taken by Penrose or his wife, Lee Miller—show the colorful cast of characters, from Gary Cooper to Françoise Gilot, from Alfred Barr to Dora Maar, as well as the events and art described, and add to the record of a remarkable relationship. 60 illustrations.
