Don't Dream: The Collected Horror and Fantasy of Donald Wandrei
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.57 $Fritz Leiber remarked "At the time that Lovecraft died, Donald Wandrei was the most natural successor to him that I could think of."Robert Bloch called him "...on of the most important creative talents in the Lovecraft circle..."Surpisingly, however, his work was out-of-print for many years, after his break with Arkham House in the aftermath of co-founder August Derleth. This 416-page tome includes stories originally published in venues including Weird Tales, Astounding Stories, Fantasy Magazine, Argosy, and Esquire; some from The Minnesota Quarterly, and a number of pieces never published before this book was assembled. Here the reader can revel in the weird imagination of Donald Wandrei without collecting dozens of rare and scattered pulps or buying rare Arkham House volumes. Supplemented by non-fiction discussion by those who knew him, and introduced by the author's neighbor, Don't Dream complements Colossus (Wandrei's science fiction-- though the boundaries were fuzzy during the Golden Age!) to form a broad survey-- arguably the best of his fiction.

Time Burial: The Collected Fantasy Tales of Howard Wandrei
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 82.83 $Jailed in his youth for thrill-seeking crimes, Howard Wandrei went on to a prolific career in an amazing variety of pulp magazines-- so many that he used several noms-de-plume to keep the stories separate. He wrote hard-boiled crime stories, boxing tales, mysteries... but his imaginative genius was most engaged when he was penning weird and fantastic stories. This collection is culled from stories accepted by Weird Tales, Unknown, Astounding Stories and Spicy Mystery Stories. With access to the original manuscripts, several of the stories have been restored to the author's intent-- effectively bypassing the editors and censors of the day.Pulp scholar Dwayne Olson provides nearly 40 pages of introduction, placing the author in the pulp scene, scandals and all, with an annotated discussion. When he wasn't pounding a typewriter or chasing women, alcohol and other bad habits which contributed to his early death, Howard was also an artist. Half a dozen of his original illustrations accent this collection. The reader will find a full-immersion pulp experience to savor in this collection!

To Worlds Unknown: The Letters of Clark Ashton Smith, Donald Wandrei, Howard Wandrei, and R. H. Barlow [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 30.00 $New York: Hippocampus Press:, 2024. First edition, TPBO, Trade paperback, New, 426 pp. Cover artwork by: Jason Van Hollander "The joint correspondence of four titans of the Lovecraft Circle sheds fascinating light on the complex interplay of the personal and professional lives of these writers, artists, editors, and collectors. R. H. Barlow initiated much of the correspondence, seeking to preserve manuscripts and other material in what he called the 'Vaults of Yoh-Vombis.' Barlow discussed plans to publish a variety of Smith's poetry, but these ultimately came to nothing. Similarly, he wished to issue a volume of Howard Wandrei's weird artwork, but Howard's brother put an end to the idea. H. P. Lovecraft is a focal point of discussion in all the correspondence. Donald Wandrei developed an enmity to Barlow, in part because Wandrei falsely believed that Barlow had stolen Lovecraft's books and manuscripts, even though he had been declared Lovecraft's literary executor. When Wandrei was helping August Derleth found Arkham House, he urged Derleth, Smith, and others to shun Barlow, with the result that Barlow was essentially driven out of the field. This volume presents an invaluable glimpse into the world of weird and pulp fiction in the 1930s and 1940s, as each writer displays the distinctive traits that have made him a renowned figure in the genre." The Inhabitant of the Lake & Other Unwelcome Tenants [Trade Paperback]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 29.03 $SYNOPSIS The influence of H. P. Lovecraft spans the centuries. Several of his correspondents who were writers learned by imitating him. The early tales of Robert Bloch and Henry Kuttner read very much like Lovecraft, while others of his friends Donald Wandrei, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard and August Derleth among them incorporated his ideas and myths into their fiction. Bloch and Frank Belknap Long even wrote tributes to him that used him, barely disguised, as a character. After Lovecraft s death August Derleth took control of his mythos, adding to and organising it more systematically than its creator ever had. Derleth was a jealous guardian of Lovecraft s reputation, and insisted on vetting any stories by new writers that used the mythos. Few found his favour until 1961, when a Liverpudlian fifteen-year-old sent him the first drafts of several Lovecraftian tales. The outcome was a ten-year professional relationship and the appearance in 1964 of the first book of previously unpublished Lovecraftian fiction for five years. It was The Inhabitant of the Lake. This fiftieth anniversary edition reprints that book in full, including the original introduction. It also includes the first drafts of all the tales that were rewritten before publication and reproduces Derleth s editorial responses to the stories. This edition is superbly illustrated by Randy Broecker in the great tradition of Weird Tales. Customers should note that this Drugstore Indian Press edition includes the first drafts of the stories plus August Derleth's letters, Randy Broecker's illustrations and the author's Afterword.
