Neu -Gerhard Altenbourg (1926-1989) war ein in jeder Hinsicht außergewöhnlicher Künstler. Seit den fünfziger Jahren in Sammlerkreisen geschätzt, entstand sein mehrere Tausend Arbeiten umfassendes Oeuvre in größter Zurückgezogenheit im thüringischen Altenburg. Seine Lebensauffassung und seine Gedankenwelt - angeregt durch Bücher, Bilder und Begegnungen mit den verschiedensten Menschen - waren der Stoff, aus dem sein Werk erwuchs. Er entdeckte immer neue Mittel, das, was er ausdrücken wollte, zu formulieren. So kombinierte er stets eine Vielzahl von Techniken und Medien - von Aquarellen, Kohle- und Kreidezeichnungen über Umsetzungen in Steindruck, Holzschnitt, Radierung oder Metallrelief bis hin zu Künstlerbüchern und Texten.
