The Willamette Valley: Migration and Settlement on the Oregon Frontier
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 105.08 $Among the most popular themes considered by American social scientists have been the twin topics of westward migration and frontier development. This book focuses on one of the earliest and most significant American settlements on the Pacific slope -- Oregon south of the Columbia River -- in order to understand better the migratory process and the resulting interaction of men with a wilderness environment. The Willamette River Field Guide
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.18 $The Willamette River flows for nearly 200 miles, through deep forests, green valleys, and past cities—Eugene, Springfield, Corvallis, Albany, Salem, Keizer, Newberg, Oregon City, and Portland. Yet it is a river hiding in plain sight: until now, there has been no comprehensive guide to the Willamette. Following the river downstream from its tributaries through its vast valleys and to the tidal flats beyond Portland, The Willamette River Field Guide is the story of Oregon's earliest inhabitants, the connection between the river and the towns along its banks, the wildlife it supports, and the effects of alterations to its geography and ecology. Includes tips for more than a dozen riverside visits and trips. Twelve maps cover each segment of the river. Beautiful new color photographs and rare historical photos help tell the story. Travis Williams knows the river intimately and cares about it passionately. Willamette Valley Railways (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.49 $Willamette Valley Railways tells the story of the electric interurban railways that ran through Oregon’s Willamette Valley and of the streetcars that operated in the towns they served. Long before modern light rail vehicles, electric trains were providing Portland and the Willamette Valley with reliable, elegant transportation that was second to none. Between 1908 and 1915, two large systems, the Oregon Electric Railway and the Southern Pacific Red Electrics, joined smaller competitors constructing railways throughout the region. Portland became the hub of an impressive interurban network in a frenzy of electric railway building. Yet all too soon, this brief but glorious interurban era was over. Highway improvement and the growth of automobile ownership made electric passenger trains unprofitable in the sparsely populated valley. By the early 1930s, the company that had launched the nation’s first true interurban was the only one still offering passenger service here.

Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.55 $Located between the population centers of Portland and Eugene, Oregon’s Willamette Valley boasts rich opportunities for outdoor recreation that are too often overlooked. Families with young children, day hikers, long-distance backpackers, kayakers, canoeists, bird watchers, and cyclists alike will find ideas for spending a satisfying afternoon or venturing outside for a multiday trip. Whether choosing a wheelchair-accessible trail, a rugged hike in a wilderness area, a dip in a rocky swimming hole, a paddle on the broad Willamette, or a bike ride through farmland—whether lifetime residents or week-long visitors—outdoor enthusiasts will benefit from detailed notes on the history and ecology of this special place. Armchair travelers will also find reward in the book’s literary and natural history offerings.
