Willem de Kooning: Garden in Delft : Landscapes 1928-1988
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.23 $This carefully culled portfolio of 14 paintings, meticulously reproduced and documented, spans 60 years--from the time of the master's arrival in America to the late 80s. Readers will find rare examples of de Kooning's earliest works juxtaposed with a cityscape from the 1950s, canvases from the important period of his arrival in Easthampton, and abstract landscapes of the 70s and 80s. David Anfam's essay traces de Kooning's intriguing relationship to water, invoking the work of Heraclitus, Yeats, Melville and Frost in conjuring the sense of fluidity that characterized both his urban and rural work. Anfam also puzzles over the enigma of a man who lived perpetually beside the ocean--the book opens with a photograph of him striding across the beach in Easthampton in 1968--but never learned to swim.

Willem de Kooning: The Artist's Materials
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.95 $This in-depth study of the paintings of Willem de Kooning (1904–1997) from the 1940s through the 1970s breaks new ground in its analysis of the artist’s working methods and yields new information about previously unreported materials. De Kooning’s idiosyncratic working methods have long engendered intense speculation and debate among conservators and art historians, primarily on the basis of visual inspection and anecdotal accounts rather than rigorous technical analysis. This is the first systematic study of de Kooning’s creative process to use comprehensive scientific examinations of the artist’s pigments, binders, and supports to inform art historical interpretations, thereby presenting a key to the complicated evolution of the artist’s work.Written for conservation scientists, conservators, specialists in modern art history, museum curators, and practicing artists, this book offers insights into the way an artist can achieve radical changes in style. The technical discussions will have practical applications for conservators, curators, collections managers, and collectors who care for twentieth-century art.

Willem de Kooning: Works, Writings, Interviews (Ediciones Poligrafa)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 100.13 $Willem de Kooning arrived in the United States in 1926 as a 22-year-old stowaway from Holland--soon to become a leading figure in the emergence of Abstract Expressionist painting in New York. This volume presents over 100 illustrations from each phase of de Kooning's career, and describes the personal and art historical background behind his work and its critical reception. Sally Yard, author of Willem de Kooning: The First Twenty-Six Years in New York, details the progress of de Kooning's career, from his brief stint as a WPA painter, to his first one-person exhibition of abstract work in 1948. Five years later, his series of women rendered in aggressive, lashing gestures stunned contemporaries, not only for their vehemence but for their supposed reversal in direction from "pure" abstraction to figuration. Of course, the alternation, struggle and intertwining between these two tendencies remained essential to de Kooning's work over six decades (as he once commented, "I was reading Kierkegaard and I came across the phrase 'To be pure is to will one thing.' It made me sick.") Featuring some of de Kooning's most remarkable writings, interviews with Harold Rosenberg and James T. Valliere, lavish illustrations and Yard's accessible scholarly discussion, Willem de Kooning: Works, Writings, Interviews is invaluable for anyone seeking to understand the work and impact of this twentieth-century master.

Willem Leyel's Travel to India 1639-1643 (Hardcover)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.83 $On 8 November 1639, Willem Leyel leaves Denmark as commander of the ship "Christianshavn". The destination is the Danish possession Tranquebar with the fortress Dansborg on the south-western coast of India from which he is to manage the trading activities of the first Danish East India Company. The journey is a nightmare of obstacles and it ends up lasting several years. When he finally arrives at Dansborg on 5 September 1643, everything is in a state of decay and the relieved manager bolts with the last items of value. Leyel has to reconstruct everything from scratch and proves to be equal to the occasion. There are too few men, too little money, and hardly any connection to the management in Copenhagen. But Leyel knows how to stay friends with the local princes, he earns money through trading in their kingdoms -- and gradually through piracy too! -- so that Dansborg can remain Danish territory. The story of Willem Leyel builds primarily on his own records which are kept in the public record office. It paints a picture of a unique and fantastic piece of Danish history, of the conditions in Tranquebar, of life during the perilous voyages -- several dramatic events have been reconstructed down to the last detail.

Willem De Kooning - Jean Dubuffet: The Women
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.99 $"De Kooning/Dubuffet: The Women" is an example of how some of the best New York City galleries are making major museums seem ponderous and predictable. If a museum would ever organize an exhibition on the startling, creepy and sometimes painful images of women painted by Willem de Kooning and Jean Dubuffet in the aftermath of World War II, it might be more comprehensive and scholarly than this one, at the Pace Gallery, but it would probably not be as unpretentious and intimate. Although the focus of the show is narrow, its reach is unlimited. De Kooning and Dubuffet are famous and influential artists. The work of each, particularly de Kooning, still has the capacity to surprise and shock. In their images of women, both artists let themselves go, personally and pictorially. Juxtaposing their approaches to art, and their feelings about sexuality and women, clarifies not only their work, but also postwar French and American art.
