Tales of Imperial Russia: The Life and Times of Sergei Witte, 1849-1915
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 84.73 $History and biography meet in Tales of Imperial Russia, a study of the late-Romanov Russian Empire, told through the figure of Sergei Witte. Like Bismarck or Gorbachev, Witte was a European statesman serving an empire. He was the most important statesman of pre-revolutionary Russia. In the Georgia, Odessa, Kyiv, and St. Petersburg of the nineteenth century, he inhabited the worlds of the Victorian Age, as young boy, student, railway executive, lover of divorcees and Jews, monarchist, and technocrat. His political career saw him construct the Tran-Siberian Railway, propel Russia towards Far Eastern war with Japan, visit America in 1905 to negotiate the Treaty of Portsmouth concluding that war, and return home to confront revolutionary disorder with the State Duma, the first Russian parliament. The book is based on two memoir manuscripts that Witte wrote between 1906 and 1912, and includes his account of Nicholas II, the Empress Alexandra, and the machinations of a Russian imperial court that he believed were leading the country to revolution. Telling the story both of a life and of the last days of the Tsarist empire, Tales of Imperial Russia will delight and inform all those interested in biography, literature, and history, as well as readers interested in the history of modern Russia.

Art for History's Sake: The Texas Collection of the Witte Museum
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 111.17 $From the back cover: "This is the definitive survey of Texas art and artists. Arranged in encyclopedia format, it covers more than a century of the most important Texas and Texas-related artists. Based on the most comprehensive collection of Texas art -- the paintings in the Witte Museum of the San Antonio Museum Association -- Art for History's Sake will be the new standard reference book on the subject for students, scholars, collectors, and art lovers. Covering the period from 1845 to 1950, the collection is particularly rich in nineteenth-century Texas paintings, and this handsomely illustrated study of the collection will add a new dimension to the greater field of American art. Over seventy artists are represented with biographical entries arranged alphabetically. Many of the important paintings are beautifully illustrated in color, and a provenance -- with listings of exhibitions and publications in which they have appeared -- is included."

Photography on the South Texas Frontier: Images from the Witte Museum Collection [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 275.00 $Compelling images of people in a region that in many ways remains a frontier fill the pages of this handsome book. The photographs, most published for the first time, are from the top-ranked collection of the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas. They catch South Texans during more than a century and a half of formal and informal moments in studios, at home, at work and at play. All illustrations were scanned in color, yielding a range of tones that otherwise disappear when historic images are converted to black and white. The images are also treated as artifacts, preserving their patina of age and reproducing the original mountings and borders, which often bear elaborate typography. The oldest, a daguerreotype, was made in 1849, less than twenty years after the birth of photography. It pictures Major General William Jenkins Worth, a Mexican War hero for whom the city of Fort Worth is named. Images of others in South Texas appear in tintypes, then cabinet cards, autochromes, photo postcards and snapshots. On the cover, a cowboy poses in the 1880s with his horse and rifle close at hand. Inside, firewood vendors pause with their burros in Laredo. The imprisoned Geronimo leans against a wall at Fort Sam Houston. Textile designers work in Brownsville. A piano class picnics in San Antonio. In Starr County, a water hauler rides atop his wagon. In Atascosa County, J. Frank Dobie lounges beside a fence. These carefully selected images and the accompanying text both portray the evolution of photography and offer unique perspectives on a distinctive frontier.

Liedtke Gerard Houckgeest - Hendrick van Vliet - Emanuel de Witte 1982. 4to. 154 pp. text and 130 plates (14 in color). Cloth bound ISBN 90-70288-11-7 Architectural Painting in Delft is a thorough study of the pictures of church interiors painted in Delft by Gerard Houckgeest, Hendrick van Vliet and Emanuel de Witte. Their sources in earlier artists like Pieter Saenredam and Bartholomeus van Bassen, their influence on contemporaries like Anthony de Lorme, Daniel de Blieck and the Berckheyde brothers, and the entire Amsterdam career of Emanuel de Witte are also discussed. A very different view of De Witte's work is taken than that found in the standard monograph (Manke, 1963), particularly in respect to the attribution, dating, and relationship to Houckgeest of De Witte's earliest church interiors. Revisions to Manke's catalogue, a catalogue of the pictures of actual churches painted by Houckgeest, and a long oeuvre list of the church interiors painted by Van Vliet are appended to the five chapters of text. Finally, a discussion and list of the church interiors painted by Cornelis de Man take into account pictures that have very recently come to light or are here attributed to him. The book is based on the author's doctoral dissertation completed at the Courtauld Institute in 1974, but it is completely rewritten and revised, and considers literature published and pictures known by January, 1982. language : english text Size: Quarto
