Die Dissertation "Ante aedes. Darstellung von Architektur in römischen Reliefs" befaßt sich mit einer der interessantesten Erscheinungen römischer Reliefkunst: der Verwendung von Architektur in Reliefs. Sie gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die Verwendung und Entwicklung dieser Darstellungen, die ein Phänomen der römischen Kaiserzeit sind, so daß die Arbeit die ersten vier nachchristlichen Jahrhunderte umfaßt. Die einzelnen Reliefs werden chronologisch vorgestellt, wobei zwischen Staatsreliefs und Reliefs anderer Gattungen unterschieden wird. Die chronologische Analyse erlaubt, Kriterien zur Datierung von Architekturdarstellungen zu erstellen, soweit dies im Rahmen der relativ kleinen Anzahl der Stücke möglich ist. Neben einer genauen Untersuchung der Architektur wird auch der Gesamtkontext des Reliefs nach Inhalt, Anbringungsort und historischer Einordnung berücksichtigt. Sind die Bauwerke identifizierbar, wird ihre Wiedergabe mit eventuell erhaltenen Resten und Baubefunden oder antiken Quellen verglichen. Wo dies nicht möglich ist, werden Deutungsvorschläge gemacht und diskutiert. Bei mehrfacher Darstellung eines Bauwerkes in Reliefs verschiedener Epochen werden die Darstellungen untereinander verglichen, um so ebenfalls zu Datierungskriterien zu kommen. Abschließend wird ein Überblick über die Funktion und Darstellungsweise der Bauwerke in den Reliefs, über Gebäudetypen und die Entwicklung einzelner Bauglieder gegeben.
