In tribute to Max Huber on the hundredth anniversary of his birth, Poltrona Frau has produced a duo of rugs based on drawings of unproduced works sketched by the Swiss artist and graphic designer in 1936 and 1947. 'Billie', based on a 1936 sketch, is notable for its application of lines, and a distinct, soulful rhythm that recalls the world famous jazz singer Billie Holliday, and is a fitting homage to Huber who is said to have been deeply inspired and influenced by the genre. Tangibly, it manifests here by way of two bold graphics that take up almost the entire surface of the rug and are highly calibrated in every single detail. Comprising a circle and a vertical line, these two elements introduce a strong formal balance and notable visual impact, while their placement on a neutral background further compounds the rigorous, almost constructivist design. Handmade from 50% wool, 50% linen, the rug is hand-spun on wooden looms using the Tibetan knot technique and features a saddle leather label hand-sewn on its back, which is stamped with the Poltrona Frau logo. A cornucopia of rarely seen drawings, full of delicacy and wit, from the acclaimed sculptor\n\nAmerican artist Tony Feher (1956–2016) was best known for his sculptures and site-determined installations made of ubiquitous, everyday objects such as plastic bottles, glass jars, marbles, twine, cardboard boxes and other mass-produced items. It is less well known was that he was also a prolific draftsman who drew incessantly throughout his career. At the time of his death in 2016, Feher had assembled an archive of nearly 1,000 drawings—on napkins, discarded correspondence, restaurant menus, lined paper—which are now in the collection of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. In hasty arrays of image and text, these drawings reflect the same singular wit and aesthetic sensitivity that underpinned all his work.\nThis monograph presents for the first time a selection of Feher's drawings: full of jokes, poems, schematic illustrations and the repeated images (such as a jug of water hung on cord) that would later populate his sculptural installations.
