Philosopher Jack, E-bok
Leverantör: Ordochbok.se Pris: 39.00 skrYoung student Jack is high-spirited, impulsive, and prone to rash decisions. When his father writes to him to explain that he has run out of money, Jack decides to join the gnarly old seafarer Captain Samson aboard the Lively Poll and seek new adventures on the high seas. Not long into the journey they encounter a ferocious storm, and the crew of the Lively Poll find themselves shipwrecked and adrift in the open ocean. Plenty of danger, excitement and adventure await in this swashbuckling tale from the much-loved children’s author R.M. Ballantyne. R.M. Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a Scottish artist and prolific author of mostly children’s fiction. Born in Edinburgh, Ballantyne was the ninth of ten children. At the age of 16 Ballantyne moved to Canada, where he worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company, travelling all over the country to trade for fur. He returned to Scotland in 1847 following the death of his father, and it was then that he began his literary career in earnest, writing over 100 children’s adventure books over the course of his life. Stories such as ‘The Coral Island’ and ‘The Young Fur Traders’ were hugely popular, and many of them drew on his own experiences of travelling throughout Canada. A stickler for detail, Ballantyne continued to travel widely to research the backgrounds and settings for his exciting stories. His tales became an inspiration for authors of the future, including ‘Treasure Island’ novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. Ballantyne spent the latter period of his life living in London and Italy for the sake of his health. He died in Rome in 1894 at the age of 68.EPUB3: Reflowable

How To Think Like A Philosopher
Leverantör: Ginza.se Pris: 169.00 skr (+39.00 skr)As politics slides toward impulsivity, and outrage bests rationality, how can philosophy help us critically engage with the world? How to Think Like A Philosopher is a revelatory exploration of the methods, tenets and attitudes of thought that guide philosophy, and how they can be applied to our own lives. Drawing on decades of enquiry and a huge range of interviews, Julian Baggini identifies twelve key principles that promote incisive thinking. Pay attention; question everything; seek clarity, not certainty: these are just a few of philosophy's guiding maxims which can be applied to everything from understanding the impact of climate change to correctly appraising our own temperaments. Both a fresh introduction to philosophy covering canonical and contemporary philosophers, and an essential, practical guide to good thinking, How to Think Like a Philosopher shows us the way to a more humane, balanced and rational approach to thinking, to politics, and to life.

Norman The Moral Philosophers: An Introduction to Ethics (häftad, eng)
Leverantör: Buyersclub.se Pris: 529.00 skr (+49.00 skr)EXKLUSIVA MEDLEMPRISER -The Moral Philosophers adopts a historical approach to moral philosophy, taking in chronological sequence some of the major ethical philosophers of the past. Richard Norman introduces the thought of each figure as a coherent and comprehensive ethical theory, exploring their richness and complexity. Each theory is critically examined and presented as an attempt to surmount some of the deficiencies of its predecessor; and through this critical process the bookmoves towards some concluding suggestions about the content of an acceptable ethical theory. This new edition includes four new chapters: one on Nietzsche, and three which provide substantially extended coverage of twentieth-century moral philosophy, including discussions of contemporary utilitarianism, rights-based ethical theories, contractarian ethics and virtue ethics, and recent debates between realism and anti-realism in ethics. The Moral Philosophers is designed for undergraduate students and the general reader, and is written in clear and non-technical language. It is intended for use as a basic text in an introductory course on ethics, with detailed recommended reading sections at the beginning of each chapter.
