Menhir "Vola" Primitivo Terra d'Otranto DOC 2022 - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 19.00 £ (+0.69 £)From the heart of Apulia comes Vola, Primitivo Terre d'Otranto DOP, an intense and vibrant red that encapsulates the soul of Salento. It is produced by the Menhir winery in Minervino di Lecce. Primitivo in purity, it offers a unique sensory experience, capable of conquering the palate of the most demanding enthusiasts. The grapes used for the production of this wine are rooted in a unique terroir, characterised by sandy-loam soils on calcareous rock. The warm, Mediterranean climate, mitigated by sea breezes, creates the ideal conditions for the growth of grapes of the highest quality, rich in sugars and aromas. Harvested by hand in the first week of September, vinification is traditional in red, with temperature-controlled maceration designed to enhance the aromas and flavours of the original grape variety. At the end of the transformation, the wine matures in the bottle for a few months, completing its evolution process. In the glass, it has an impenetrable ruby colour with violet reflections. On the nose, it reveals an explosion of fruity blueberry aromas, interwoven with notes of Mediterranean herbs, vanilla and balsamic hints. In the mouth, it is dense and enveloping, with extraordinary drinkability and a lingering finish. Good already today, the producers recommend uncorking it within 5-10 years, pairing it with main meat dishes, such as Angus fillet with cardoncelli mushrooms, or with mature cheeses such as medium-aged canestrato.

Giustini "Areale" Primitivo di Manduria DOC 2022 - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 1.35 £ (+0.69 £)Write Primitivo and read Puglia. Yes, because this ancient and much-loved grape variety is actually native to Apulia, so deeply rooted in its territory that it has practically become its symbol. Primitivo is used to produce wines with intense aromas of ripe fruit, such as black cherries, plums and blackberries, and hints of spices such as black pepper and vanilla. A fine example of this is this Areale, which originates from grapes harvested 'between land and sea', in the cradle of DOC Manduria. It is from here that the best Primitivo grapes come, those that best represent the authentic and faithful expression of the varietal. Giustini works his grapes with care and skill, proceeding with maceration and alcoholic fermentation induced by selected yeasts. The process, with constant temperature control, protae for about 10 days. Immediately after racking, the wine is then passed into French oak barriques, where it continues its slow maturation. Ruby red in colour with garnet hues, this Primitivo has scents typical for the variety, with notes of red and dark fruit, such as black cherry, plum and cherry. In the mouth it is pleasantly soft and ample, with elegant tannins, well supported by a pleasant freshness. It is the right wine to accompany roasted and stewed meats, but also first courses with red sauces, rich soups and mature cheeses.

Giustini "Patù" Primitivo Salento IGP 2023 - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 1.19 £ (+0.69 £)It is called Patù and is, technically, a Salento IGP from pure Primitivo grapes. In the winery's intentions, Patù is a 'Primitivo with character'. A tribute to the roots of the Papadopoli family, for four generations at the helm of the Giustini winery, whose ancestors of Greek origin settled in the past in the heart of Salento to dedicate themselves to farming life. A wine that astonishes for its harmony and envelopment, it comes from a manual harvest of the best Primitivo grapes, starting in the last ten days of September. Once in the cellar, the grapes are selected, destemmed and pressed. This yields the must, which is left to macerate with the skins and then undergoes alcoholic fermentation. This process lasts for about 10-12 days. Once the transformation is complete, the wine is then refined for a few months in steel tanks before being bottled. Only after a further resting period in the cellar, then, is the wine ready to go on the market. Deep ruby red in colour, the nose reveals an unmistakable aroma of well-ripened red fruit. In the mouth, however, it proves to be a wine of great character and good structure. Although it is pleasantly robust, however, its fruity character remains evident. It is the wine recommended with savoury first courses and, above all, roast meat.

Schola Sarmenti "Cubardi" Primitivo Salento IGT 2022 - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 1.84 £ (+0.69 £)Cubardi is an important Primitivo that comes from vineyards 65 years old. A small natural work of art capable of producing highly concentrated fruit. Few bunches, super rich, which are enhanced by Schola Sarmenti through careful processing. Vineyards cultivated with the traditional Apulian gobelet system that requires great skill and, unfortunately, also a lot of manual work. After harvesting, the grapes are delicately placed in small aerated boxes and delivered to the winery to be processed within a few hours. Then, after vinification, the wine matures for a period of about 6 months in second-passage French oak tonneaux, and then completes its refinement with a further 8 months in the bottle. The result is an intense and concentrated red, with notes of ripe fruit and hints of tobacco, chocolate and coffee. In the mouth it is velvety and enveloping, with tannins capable of expanding delicately. A wine with great personality that undoubtedly requires an important pairing. Excellent with large meat stews, it can also be a pleasant glass to sip slowly while chatting in the evening.

Giustini "Ancinorè" Primitivo Manduria DOC 2022 - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 20.00 £ (+0.69 £)When the climate becomes hot, as is often the case in Puglia, to cultivate grapes we often resort to the ancient folk wisdom that the vine must grow low, ripening its clusters close to the ground, to benefit from even the slightest coolness from the earth. The traditional espalier system is therefore preferred to the modern espalier. Beautiful to look at and effective in terms of the quality produced. But very, very tiring for those who have to take care of it. Every operation, in fact, must be carried out manually, without the help of any machine. Giustini offers this Acinorè, 'Old Vines'. This is a Primitivo di Manduria DOC, made from grapes cultivated in the Alberello style. A living heritage that the company preserves, protects and is committed to enhancing. Acinorè, in fact, represents the best interpretation of Primitivo proposed by the winery. Harvested - obviously - by hand, after destemming and pressing the maceration period lasts about 15 days, followed by alcoholic fermentation and a long period of maturation in French oak barriques. This reveals a wine characterised by a beautiful, intense ruby red colour, with complex aromas reminiscent of well-ripened red and dark fruit. Then vanilla and even chocolate. In the mouth it is full, soft and balanced. An important red, the kind that requires a dedicated menu. Very tasty first courses and meats subjected to long cooking. This is the only way to do it justice. Or, as a valid alternative, it can also be served away from meals, as a meditation wine.

Produttori di Manduria Primitivo Rosato Salento IGP Notte Rossa 2023 - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 11.00 £ (+0.69 £)It's probably suggestive. But the colour of this wine is really reminiscent of the coral that decorates its label. It is called Aka and it is a Salento IGT rosé, produced with pure Primitivo grapes. Bunches of grapesfrom very old plants that reach over 40 years of age. Historic vineyards that produce little but mostly produce well. After the harvest, which usually takes place towards the end of August, the grapes are quickly brought to the cellars and sent to a maceration phase that lasts about 8 - 12 hours. Conventional wisdom calls them the "wines of one night". It takes little for the Primitivo to yield that beautiful and evocative nuance of colour. The scent is captivating. Intense notes of fresh cherries, pomegranate, red apple, wild strawberries and raspberry. In the mouth, however, it is a fresh but well-structured wine. Crunchy, we could call it, but also savoury and decidedly (pleasantly) long.

Crifo "Le Carrare" Primitivo Puglia IGP 2020 - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 1.29 £ (+0.69 £)Ruvo di Puglia is an area that stands out for its geographical and climatic characteristics. Situated on the limestone hills of the Alta Murgia, this place offers an ideal habitat for the cultivation of Primitivo, which, in turn, finds its highest expression here. This is the birthplace of Primitivo Puglia IGP Le Carrare, a beautifully pleasant red wine proposed by CRIFO. Primitivo, it may go without saying, is a grape variety known for its ability to produce robust, structured and richly aromatic wines. For Le Carrare, in particular, only grapes cultivated with the spurred cordon are used, which guarantees a low yield per plant but a higher concentration of sugars and aromatic substances in the grapes. With a density of around 5,000 vines per hectare, high quality grapes are obtained, ready to be harvested in the first ten days of September, when they reach the right balance between acidity and sugars. After harvesting, which is done manually, the grapes are taken to the cellar for careful selection of the bunches, followed by crushing and destemming. The fermentation maceration phase, which takes place in steel for 8-10 days at a controlled temperature, is crucial to extract all the colour and aromas from the skins. Subsequently, the must is pressed softly to preserve the delicacy of the tannins, and malolactic fermentation, also in steel, begins. This helps to make the wine softer and less angular. Ageing then continues in steel and then in the bottle, until a perfect balance is achieved. Le Carrare has a deep, impenetrable red colour. The bouquet is intense and complex, with predominant notes of plums and cherries under spirits, followed by hints of blueberry jam, spices and scents of Mediterranean scrub. In the mouth it is structured and warm, with well-balanced tannins and a softness that makes it extremely pleasant. Its depth and good drinkability are the characteristics that distinguish it and make it perfect to accompany rich and tasty dishes. Try it, for example, with grilled meat, pulled pork, lamb, ribs with BBQ sauce, brisket or, for those who love the simple and genuine dishes of our grandmothers, with baked lasagne or Sunday braised meat.

Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 1.45 £ (+0.69 £)Say Puglia and the mind immediately flies to the most famous of its red grape varieties. Primitivo produces wines of great personality, often with a full body and soft, elegant tannins. This Brut proposed by Vite Colte is no exception. An intense red, right from the colour which looks like an impenetrable ruby with evident violet reflections. Cantina Sampietrana "Centoare" Primitivo Puglia IGP 2022 - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 1.09 £ (+0.69 £)The flagship of Apulian viticulture is undoubtedly Primitivo, a grape variety with ancient roots and a fascinating history. A red grape variety, it has found its ideal habitat in the fertile and warm soil of this region. Known for its richness of flavour, robust character and complexity, Cantina Sampietrana cultivates it in San Pietro Vernotico, province of Brindisi. The traditional 'alberello' training system is still used here, a method dating back centuries that involves 'training' the plants to grow like small, single-trunked trees, without the support of wires or supports. The vines are then pruned to maintain a compact bush shape, with the bunches growing directly from the height of the main trunk. This fascinating form of cultivation requires a great deal of effort and care on the part of the vine growers, as each vine must be pruned and cared for individually. But the results are often, as in this case, worth the effort. Centoare, Primitivo Puglia IGP, is made from 100% Primitivo grapes. After vinification, the red wine matures in oak barrels for 6-8 months before being bottled. A wine characterised by a beautiful ruby red colour, the bouquet is fruity and fresh. In the mouth it is pleasant, dry and full-bodied, with notes of red-mouthed fruit.

Due Palme "Corerosa" Sussumaniello Primitivo Salento IGP - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 1.35 £ (+0.69 £)Corerosa is a beautiful rosé that comes from one of the regions best known for producing these intriguing wines. We are in Puglia, and to be precise in Salento. Here Cantina Due Palme vinifies in pink two of the typical vines of the region, the Sussumaniello and the Primitivo. The grapes, harvested when fully ripe, undergo careful selection to prevent less-than-perfect bunches from compromising the quality of the finished wine. The vinification is simple and at the same time accurate. The right pink point is obtained by means of a short contact between must and skins. It is, in other words, what we call in the jargon the wine of a night. A quick refinement in steel tanks follows before bottling. In the glass it has a beautiful bright cherry pink colour. The nose is delicately fruity and floral, with hints of black cherry, cherry and raspberry. In the mouth, however, it is above all savoury, with a distinct acidity that enhances the freshness. A wine to pair with satisfaction with tasty fish dishes.

Masseria Altemura "Apulo" Primitivo Salento IGT - Country: Italy - Capacity: 0.75
Vendor: Svinando.co.uk Price: 11.00 £ (+0.69 £)A young red wine, made to be appreciated right away, without having to wait years for it to reach the right aging. The base is pure Primitivo. The processing is in stainless steel at controlled temperature. Maceration on the skins for about 7 days, to obtain the complete extraction of color, aroma and tannins, then an aging of about 3 months in steel. The result is a wine of intense red color, enlivened by bright purple reflections. On the nose it has intense hints of ripe red fruit, plum jam and black cherry. Light, but still present, are the spices that remind of cinnamon. On the palate it reveals itself as a pleasantly soft and enveloping wine. Notes of ripe, juicy red fruit return, with nice concentration and long persistence. However, it does not lack balance. Alcohol and fruit, in fact, in this wine are proportionate to a pleasant basic acidity that makes the wine easy to drink. Even too much so!
