Berthold Lubetkin
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 8.56 $Berthold Lubetkin (1901-1990) is widely regarded as the most outstanding architect of his generation to have practiced in England. Almost all his surviving buildings have been landmarked, and his work and ideas continue to feature in architectural discourse and education. Lubetkin's designs are characterized by clear geometric figures, technical ingenuity, and a functional resolution that show modernism at its most poetic and powerful. Famous works such as the Penguin Pool at London Zoo, with its interlocking spiral ramps, and Highpoint One, an elegantly planned eightstory apartment block in north London, brought Lubetkin and his firm international recognition and praise from Le Corbusier. With text by architect, author, and Lubetkin expert John Allan, and stunning new photographs by Morley von Sternberg, this study provides a fresh account of this key twentiethcentury architect, and has an immediacy and accessibility that reveals Lubetkin and his work to a new audience.

Berthold Lubetkin
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 8.56 $A working stuff, a hobo, and an irreconcilable revolutionist...second only to Joe Hill as the IWW's most popular songwriter, T-Bone Slim incontestably was the Wobblie's greatest man of letters". For two decades readers of IWW publications recognized him as the Union's "most noted columnist." America's finest hobo wordsmith and a remarkable aphorist, he also merits a place among the great American humorists. The aim of the present volume is to make available for the first time a representative selection of work by an important author who has suffered undeserved neglect. Every message of pure revolt deserves to be heard, and T-Bone Slim's is one of the purest. His writing at its best has a remarkable flair, a deep and dazzling humor, a profound awareness of the sensuous alchemy of words. It also happens to be unlike anything else in the world." [From the Introduction by Franklin Rosemont]

Iron Man: Rudolf Berthold: Germany's Indomitable Fighter Ace of World War I
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.71 $As one of the most successful German fighter pilots of World War I Hauptmann Rudolf Berthold was victorious in forty-four aerial combats. He was also shot down or forced to land after six fights and survived crash landings in every case. Early in World War I, when only fighter pilots were awarded the Kingdom of Prussia’s (and de facto, Imperial Germany’s ) highest bravery decoration, the Pour le Mérite, Rudolf Berthold became the tenth recipient of the honor. Of that early cohort of air heroes, only Berthold and one other pilot survived the war. This book tells his remarkable story. Six weeks into the war, Berthold became the first airman in the 2nd Army area to be awarded an Iron Cross in recognition of his bravery and tenacity in combat. The symbolism of the award was appropriate. Described by one of his pilot protégés as, ‘an Iron Man – with an absolutely unbendable iron will’, he was a dedicated patriot. And, after he became a fighter pilot, he demonstrated a fierce fighting spirit in many encounters with British and French adversaries. All of his aerial combats with other Pour le Mérite flyers are detailed in this book. Indeed, Berthold was so relentless in his approach to aerial combat, when badly wounded, on at least six occasions, he cut short his convalescent leave to return to flying with his comrades. This included a hit to his right arm, which shattered the bone, rendering it useless – undaunted Berthold taught himself to fly using his left. Peter Kilduff has produced a landmark volume based on extensive research into Rudolf Berthold’s life and military career to form the most complete account yet about Germany’s sixth highest scoring fighter ace of WWI. Illustrated with over eighty photographs and other artworks, many of which have never been published before, Iron Man tells the tale of this ruthless, fearless and, above all, very patriotic fighter whose perseverance and bravery made him one of the most famous airmen of World War I.

Uses of Plants by the Hidatsas of the Northern Plains
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 82.33 $In 1916 anthropologist Gilbert L. Wilson worked closely with Buffalobird-woman, a highly respected Hidatsa born in 1839 on the Fort Berthold Reservation in western North Dakota, for a study of the Hidatsas’ uses of local plants. What resulted was a treasure trove of ethnobotanical information that was buried for more than seventy-five years in Wilson’s archives, now held jointly by the Minnesota Historical Society and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Wilson recorded Buffalobird-woman’s insightful and vivid descriptions of how the nineteenth-century Hidatsa people had gathered, prepared, and used the plants and wood in their local environment for food, medicine, smoking, fiber, fuel, dye, toys, rituals, and construction. From courtship rituals that took place while gathering Juneberries, to descriptions of how the women kept young boys from stealing wild plums as they prepared them for use, to recipes for preparing and cooking local plants, Uses of Plants by the Hidatsas of the Northern Plains provides valuable details of Hidatsa daily life during the nineteenth century.

Hegel's Theory of Madness
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 100.00 $This book shows how an understanding of the nature and role of insanity in Hegel's writing provides intriguing new points of access to many of the central themes of his larger philosophic project. Berthold-Bond situates Hegel's theory of madness within the history of psychiatric practice during the great reform period at the turn of the eighteenth century, and shows how Hegel developed a middle path between the stridently opposed camps of "empirical" and "romantic" medicine, and of "somatic" and "psychical" practitioners. A key point of the book is to show that Hegel does not conceive of madness and health as strictly opposing states, but as kindred phenomena sharing many of the same underlying mental structures and strategies, so that the ontologies of insanity and rationality involve a mutually illuminating, mirroring relation. Hegel's theory is tested against the critiques of the institution of psychiatry and the very concept of madness by such influential twentieth-century authors as Michel Foucault and Thomas Szasz, and defended as offering a genuinely reconciling position in the contemporary debate between the "social labeling" and "medical" models of mental illness.

Rhodes in the Hellenistic Age
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 28.83 $This book offers a detailed political history of Rhodes from the foundation of the Rhodian republic in the fifth century B.C. to the conclusions of Rhodes' alliance with Rome in the second, a period in which Rhodes was a major Mediterranean power. Richard M. Berthold provides a complete account of Rhodian foreign affairs, exploring the principles and reasons behind Rhodes' foreign policy decisions. He traces Rhodes' history through the stormy years of the fourth century to the independence and prosperity of the third, arguing that Rhodes achieved economic and political success by pursuing a course of studied neutrality. Berthold maintains that Rhodes did not willfully abandon its neutral stance during the second century, but rather was forced by events to support Rome, a posture that ultimately led to Rhodes' loss of independence.

UFO Dynamics: Psychiatric and Psychic Aspects of the UFO Syndrome
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 80.01 $What kinds of people see UFOs? What are the psychic aspects of UFO experiences? What are the long-range effects of such encounters on witnesses? The answers to these questions and more are explored in "UFO Dynamics: Psychiatric and Psychic Aspects of the UFO Syndrome," written by Berthold Eric Schwarz, the only bonafide psychiatrist to deeply investigate the major UFO cases of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s. Highly personal factors, not often reported or documented, are accessible to the psychiatrist and are closely related to the UFO problem. These factors cannot be ignored, denied, or laughed away by anyone who truly wants a fuller understanding of the UFO experience.

Traditional Narratives of the Arikara Indians, English Translations, Volume 4: Stories of Other Narrators (Hardback or Cased Book)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 54.45 $Until the late eighteenth century the Arikaras were one of the largest and most influential Indian groups on the northern plains. For centuries they have lived along the Missouri River, first in present South Dakota, later in what is now North Dakota. Today they share the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota with the Mandans and Hidatsas. Although their postcontact history and aspects of their culture are well documented, Douglas R. Parks's monumental four-volume work Traditional Narratives of the Arikara Indians represents the first comprehensive attempt to describe and record their language and literary traditions. Volumes 1 and 2 present transcriptions of 156 oral narratives in Arikara and include literal interlinear English translations. Volumes 3 and 4 contain free English translations of those narratives, making available for the first time a broad, representative group of Arikara oral traditions that will be invaluable not only to anthropologists and folklorists but to everyone interested in American Indian life and literature. The narratives cover the entire range of traditional stories found in the historical and literary tradition of the Arikara people, who classify their stories into two categories, true stories and tales. Here are myths of ancient times, legends of power bestowed, historical narratives, and narratives of mysterious incidents that affirm the existence today of supernatural power in the world, along with tales of the trickster Coyote and stories of the risque Stuwi and various other animals. In addition, there are accounts of Arikara ritualism: prayers and descriptions of how personal names are bestowed and how the Death Feast originated.
