First flown as a pure jet on 18th July 1942, on 25th July 1944 an Me 262 became the first jet aircraft used in combat when it attacked a British photo-reconnaissance Mosquito flying over Munich. Some 1,500 Me 262s were built but less than 20% of these actually flew in combat. Most remained on the ground awaiting bomber conversion, or were unable to fly because of lack of fuel, spare parts or trained pilots. The Messerschmitt Bf 110, was designed in the middle of the thirties. After a relatively convincing start in Poland in September 1939, the performance of the Zerstörer (destroyer) units, declined rapidly with heavy losses, so much so that at the end of the Battle of Britain it was decided to withdraw the Bf 110s from service and cease production. Wherever the Messerschmitt Me 321 appeared at the front during World War II it produced tremendous astonishment. Most soldiers had never seen anything like it. The huge glider with a wingspan of fifty-five meters was towed by three Bf 110s, or a five-engined He 111Z. Such an aircraft could carry up to twenty-two metric tons of freight: fuel, ammunition, trucks, tanks, 100 fully equipped troops and more. Even the Me 323D version, powered by six radial engines, was capable of carrying thirteen metric tons of freight to the front - and was a juicy target for the enemy.
