By the time the Third Reich collapsed in 1945, the Messerschmitt firm had produced some 34,000 examples of the legendary Bf 109, making it the most prolific aircraft of the era. Key to this tremendous output and to the plane's longevity was a simple design that allowed rapid production - even by unskilled Zwangsarbeiter - forced laborers - and gave Messerschmitt an advantage over the Focke Wulf Fw 190. The Nazis came to power in January 1933 intent on scrapping the Versailles Treaty that banned Germany from having an air force. Issued on 15 February 1934, the request by the new Reichsluftfahrtsministerium (RLM/Air Ministry) for a single-seat daytime air combat fighter with a top speed of 400 km/h brought a new lease of life to the financially strapped Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW). BFW began work on the plane, its first military aircraft, that December, and in May 1935 the Bf 109 V1 prototype took to the air - 10 months before the first Spitfire - launching the career of an iconic plane whose numerous versions would serve the Reich until the end of World War II.

The Messerschmitt Bf 110, was designed in the middle of the thirties. After a relatively convincing start in Poland in September 1939, the performance of the Zerstörer (destroyer) units, declined rapidly with heavy losses, so much so that at the end of the Battle of Britain it was decided to withdraw the Bf 110s from service and cease production. After the failure of its designated successor, the Me 210, the Bf 110 started a second career which was indeed infinitely more glorious since it scored more kills not only than any other Luftwaffe night-fighter but also more than all the aircraft of this type in all the air forces fighting in World War Two...

The Me210 and Me410 were originally planned as further developments of the twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf110 as the Luftwaffe sought a high-speed heavy fighter and gun platform. First flown in September 1939, the early version, Me210, proved extremely troublesome, suffering from in-flight instability and landing-gear problems. There were frequent accidents and production was terminated in April 1942 after 352 aircraft had been complete. A total of some 370 further examples were left incomplete on the production line. First flown in 1942, the sleek Daimler-Benz-powered Me410, however, was much more successful and was manufactured in large numbers as a two-seat tactical aircraft fighter for ground-attacks and reconnaissance operations. More than 100 different variants and sub-variants had been produced by the end of 1944, using virtually every weapon available to the Luftwaffe. This book will enable readers to distinguish between the multitudes of sub-types and identify the various modifications, weapons systems, and conversion packs that were used.

The Luftwaffe's legendary Gigant (Giant) is covered in this large, detailed, and highly illustrated volume. Wherever the Messerschmitt Me 321 appeared at the front during World War II it produced tremendous astonishment. Most soldiers had never seen anything like it. The huge glider with a wingspan of fifty-five meters was towed by three Bf 110s, or a five-engined He 111Z. Such an aircraft could carry up to twenty-two metric tons of freight: fuel, ammunition, trucks, tanks, 100 fully equipped troops and more. Even the Me 323D version, powered by six radial engines, was capable of carrying thirteen metric tons of freight to the front - and was a juicy target for the enemy. In the Mediterranean theater, they were pitilessly chased from the air and bombed and strafed on the ground. Only one Transportgeschwader was equipped with the Me 323. Everything about the type was strictly secret - even the Gruppen equipped with the type knew little about each other.
