Der Computer hat sich an allgemeinbildenden Schulen - nicht nur in Nordrhein-Westfalen, sondern in fast allen Bundesländern - mit einer Geschwindigkeit durchgesetzt, die für Innovationen in diesem Bereich durchaus als außergewöhnliche bezeichnet werden kann. So ist es in der langjährigen Geschichte des Gymnasiums ein einmaliger Vorgang, daß ein Fach, das erst seit kurzem, seit der "Bonner Vereinbarung zur Neugesaltung der gymnasialen Oberstufe in der Sekundarstufe 11" der Kultusministerkonferenz vom Juli 1972 im Kanon der Obberstufenfächer erwähnt wird, nach einer nur kurzen Versuchs zeit innerhalb weniger Jahre nun einen respektab­ len Platz im Kreise der etalierten Fächer einnimmt. Macht man beispielsweise die Schüler zahlen und die erteilten Wochenstunden zum Maßstab, so hat das Fach Informatik in gut zehn Jahren eine Stellung erreicht, für die andere Fächer wie Physik und Chemie fast 100 Jahre benötigt haben. Die Phase des stürmischen Wachstums, die um 1981 begann, als die ersten Schulversuche abgeschlossen waren, die Richtlinien für das Fach vorlagen und preisgünstige Computer marktgängig wurden - was sicher ein sehr wesentlicher Faktor war -, dürfte für die Sekun­ darstufe 11 des Gymnasiums in den Jahren 1985 und 1986 ihren Höhepunkt erreicht haben. Diese Phase war gekennzeichnet durch vielfältige Aktivitäten, die sich im Effekt gegenseitig verstärk­ ten. Einige seien genannt: - Die informationstechnologische Bildung war zum Spitzenthema der bildungspolitischen Diskussion geworden. Kaum eine schulische oder erziehungswissenschaftliche Tagung verging, auf der nicht Lehrer, Eltern, Wissenschaftler oder Bildungspolitiker auf die besondere Herausforderung der Schulen durch die neuen Informa­ tionstechnologien hinwiesen.

This monograph is devoted to the problems of modules in scheme theory; the main purpose is to develop relative scheme theory over a ringed space. The exposition contains 8 chapters. Chapters I and II are devoted to the necessary information about 2-categories which simplifies the utilization of toposes. 2-category is a category in which the sets Hom are categories and where maps between Hom's have functorial nature. One studies U-toposes by means of this notion in chapter II, U being a fixed universimum. One introduces the notion of ringed U-toposand studies U-toposes ringed by local and strict local rings in chapter III. In the same chapter one solves the corresponding universal problem and as a result introduces the spectrum of ringed U-topos in chapter IV, what makes it possible to define the category of relative schemes over a ringed topos. In chapter V-VII the theory of relative S-schemes is developed where S is a ringed topos; then this theory applies to studying of the algebraic-analytic equivalence in chapter VIII. A. A. Bel'skii.

Néron models were invented by A. Néron in the early 1960s in order to study the integral structure of abelian varieties over number fields. Since then, arithmeticians and algebraic geometers have applied the theory of Néron models with great success. Quite recently, new developments in arithmetic algebraic geometry have prompted a desire to understand more about Néron models, and even to go back to the basics of their construction. The authors have taken this as their incentive to present a comprehensive treatment of Néron models. This volume of the renowned "Ergebnisse" series provides a detailed demonstration of the construction of Néron models from the point of view of Grothendieck's algebraic geometry. In the second part of the book the relationship between Néron models and the relative Picard functor in the case of Jacobian varieties is explained. The authors helpfully remind the reader of some important standard techniques of algebraic geometry. A special chapter surveys the theory of the Picard functor.

This version differs from the Portuguese edition only in a few additions and many minor corrections. Naturally, this edition raised the question of whether to use the opportunity to introduce major additions. In a book like this, ending in the heart of a rich research field, there are always further topics that should arguably be included. Subjects like geodesic flows or the role of Hausdorff dimension in con­ temporary ergodic theory are two of the most tempting gaps to fill. However, I let it stand with practically the same boundaries as the original version, still believing these adequately fulfill its goal of presenting the basic knowledge required to approach the research area of Differentiable Ergodic Theory. In the last few decades the theory of ordinary differential equations has grown rapidly under the action of forces which have been working both from within and without: from within, as a development and deepen­ ing of the concepts and of the topological and analytical methods brought about by LYAPUNOV, POINCARE, BENDIXSON, and a few others at the turn of the century; from without, in the wake of the technological development, particularly in communications, servomechanisms, auto­ matic controls, and electronics. The early research of the authors just mentioned lay in challenging problems of astronomy, but the line of thought thus produced found the most impressive applications in the new fields. The body of research now accumulated is overwhelming, and many books and reports have appeared on one or another of the multiple aspects of the new line of research which some authors call" qualitative theory of differential equations". The purpose of the present volume is to present many of the view­ points and questions in a readable short report for which completeness is not claimed. The bibliographical notes in each section are intended to be a guide to more detailed expositions and to the original papers. Some traditional topics such as the Sturm comparison theory have been omitted. For the first systematic investigations of the theory of cluster sets of analytic functions, we are indebted to IVERSEN [1-3J and GROSS [1-3J about forty years ago. Subsequent important contributions before 1940 were made by SEIDEL [1-2J, DOOE [1-4J, CARTWRIGHT [1-3J and BEURLING [1]. The investigations of SEIDEL and BEURLING gave great impetus and interest to Japanese mathematicians; beginning about 1940 some contributions were made to the theory by KUNUGUI [1-3J, IRIE [IJ, TOKI [IJ, TUMURA [1-2J, KAMETANI [1-4J, TsuJI [4J and NOSHIRO [1-4J. Recently, many noteworthy advances have been made by BAGEMIHL, SEIDEL, COLLINGWOOD, CARTWRIGHT, HERVE, LEHTO, LOHWATER, MEIER, OHTSUKA and many other mathematicians. The main purpose of this small book is to give a systematic account on the theory of cluster sets. Chapter I is devoted to some definitions and preliminary discussions. In Chapter II, we treat extensions of classical results on cluster sets to the case of single-valued analytic functions in a general plane domain whose boundary contains a compact set of essential singularities of capacity zero; it is well-known that HALLSTROM [2J and TsuJI [7J extended independently Nevanlinna's theory of meromorphic functions to the case of a compact set of essential singUlarities of logarithmic capacity zero. Here, Ahlfors' theory of covering surfaces plays a funda­ mental role. Chapter III "is concerned with functions meromorphic in the unit circle.

Since the elassie work on inequalities by HARDY, LITTLEWOOD, and P6LYA in 1934, an enonnous amount of effort has been devoted to the sharpening and extension of the elassieal inequalities, to the discovery of new types of inequalities, and to the application of inqualities in many parts of analysis. As examples, let us eite the fields of ordinary and partial differential equations, whieh are dominated by inequalities and variational prineiples involving functions and their derivatives; the many applications of linear inequalities to game theory and mathe­ matieal economics, which have triggered a renewed interest in con­ vexity and moment-space theory; and the growing uses of digital com­ puters, which have given impetus to a systematie study of error esti­ mates involving much sophisticated matrix theory and operator theory. The results presented in the following pages reflect to some extent these ramifications of inequalities into contiguous regions of analysis, but to a greater extent our concem is with inequalities in their native habitat. Since it is elearly impossible to give a connected account of the burst of analytic activity of the last twenty-five years centering about inequalities, we have d. eeided to limit our attention to those topies that have particularly delighted and intrigued us, and to the study of whieh we have contributed.

Integration in function spaces arose in probability theory when a gen­ eral theory of random processes was constructed. Here credit is cer­ tainly due to N. Wiener, who constructed a measure in function space, integrals-with respect to which express the mean value of functionals of Brownian motion trajectories. Brownian trajectories had previously been considered as merely physical (rather than mathematical) phe­ nomena. A. N. Kolmogorov generalized Wiener's construction to allow one to establish the existence of a measure corresponding to an arbitrary random process. These investigations were the beginning of the development of the theory of stochastic processes. A considerable part of this theory involves the solution of problems in the theory of measures on function spaces in the specific language of stochastic pro­ cesses. For example, finding the properties of sample functions is connected with the problem of the existence of a measure on some space; certain problems in statistics reduce to the calculation of the density of one measure w. r. t. another one, and the study of transformations of random processes leads to the study of transformations of function spaces with measure. One must note that the language of probability theory tends to obscure the results obtained in these areas for mathematicians working in other fields. Another dir,ection leading to the study of integrals in function space is the theory and application of differential equations. A. N.
