Néron models were invented by A. Néron in the early 1960s in order to study the integral structure of abelian varieties over number fields. Since then, arithmeticians and algebraic geometers have applied the theory of Néron models with great success. Quite recently, new developments in arithmetic algebraic geometry have prompted a desire to understand more about Néron models, and even to go back to the basics of their construction. The authors have taken this as their incentive to present a comprehensive treatment of Néron models. This volume of the renowned "Ergebnisse" series provides a detailed demonstration of the construction of Néron models from the point of view of Grothendieck's algebraic geometry. In the second part of the book the relationship between Néron models and the relative Picard functor in the case of Jacobian varieties is explained. The authors helpfully remind the reader of some important standard techniques of algebraic geometry. A special chapter surveys the theory of the Picard functor.

This monograph is devoted to the problems of modules in scheme theory; the main purpose is to develop relative scheme theory over a ringed space. The exposition contains 8 chapters. Chapters I and II are devoted to the necessary information about 2-categories which simplifies the utilization of toposes. 2-category is a category in which the sets Hom are categories and where maps between Hom's have functorial nature. One studies U-toposes by means of this notion in chapter II, U being a fixed universimum. One introduces the notion of ringed U-toposand studies U-toposes ringed by local and strict local rings in chapter III. In the same chapter one solves the corresponding universal problem and as a result introduces the spectrum of ringed U-topos in chapter IV, what makes it possible to define the category of relative schemes over a ringed topos. The main purpose of the present work is to present to the reader a particularly nice category for the study of homotopy, namely the homo­ topic category (IV). This category is, in fact, - according to Chapter VII and a well-known theorem of J. H. C. WHITEHEAD - equivalent to the category of CW-complexes modulo homotopy, i.e. the category whose objects are spaces of the homotopy type of a CW-complex and whose morphisms are homotopy classes of continuous mappings between such spaces. It is also equivalent (I, 1.3) to a category of fractions of the category of topological spaces modulo homotopy, and to the category of Kan complexes modulo homotopy (IV). In order to define our homotopic category, it appears useful to follow as closely as possible methods which have proved efficacious in homo­ logical algebra. Our category is thus the" topological" analogue of the derived category of an abelian category (VERDIER). The algebraic machinery upon which this work is essentially based includes the usual grounding in category theory - summarized in the Dictionary - and the theory of categories of fractions which forms the subject of the first chapter of the book. The merely topological machinery reduces to a few properties of Kelley spaces (Chapters I and III). The starting point of our study is the category ,10 Iff of simplicial sets (C.S.S. complexes or semi-simplicial sets in a former terminology).

This version differs from the Portuguese edition only in a few additions and many minor corrections. Naturally, this edition raised the question of whether to use the opportunity to introduce major additions. In a book like this, ending in the heart of a rich research field, there are always further topics that should arguably be included. Subjects like geodesic flows or the role of Hausdorff dimension in con­ temporary ergodic theory are two of the most tempting gaps to fill. However, I let it stand with practically the same boundaries as the original version, still believing these adequately fulfill its goal of presenting the basic knowledge required to approach the research area of Differentiable Ergodic Theory. In the last few decades the theory of ordinary differential equations has grown rapidly under the action of forces which have been working both from within and without: from within, as a development and deepen­ ing of the concepts and of the topological and analytical methods brought about by LYAPUNOV, POINCARE, BENDIXSON, and a few others at the turn of the century; from without, in the wake of the technological development, particularly in communications, servomechanisms, auto­ matic controls, and electronics. The early research of the authors just mentioned lay in challenging problems of astronomy, but the line of thought thus produced found the most impressive applications in the new fields. The body of research now accumulated is overwhelming, and many books and reports have appeared on one or another of the multiple aspects of the new line of research which some authors call" qualitative theory of differential equations". The purpose of the present volume is to present many of the view­ points and questions in a readable short report for which completeness is not claimed. The bibliographical notes in each section are intended to be a guide to more detailed expositions and to the original papers. Some traditional topics such as the Sturm comparison theory have been omitted. Also excluded were all those papers, dealing with special differential equations motivated by and intended for the applications.

The book provides a comprehensive introduction and a novel mathematical foundation of the field of information geometry with complete proofs and detailed background material on measure theory, Riemannian geometry and Banach space theory.  Parametrised measure models are defined as fundamental geometric objects, which can be both finite or infinite dimensional. Based on these models, canonical tensor fields are introduced and further studied, including the Fisher metric and the Amari-Chentsov tensor, and embeddings of statistical manifolds are investigated.This novel foundation then leads to application highlights, such as generalizations and extensions of the classical uniqueness result of Chentsov or the Cramér-Rao inequality.  Additionally, several new application fields of information geometry are highlighted, for instance hierarchical and graphical models, complexity theory, population genetics, or Markov Chain Monte Carlo. Since the elassie work on inequalities by HARDY, LITTLEWOOD, and P6LYA in 1934, an enonnous amount of effort has been devoted to the sharpening and extension of the elassieal inequalities, to the discovery of new types of inequalities, and to the application of inqualities in many parts of analysis. As examples, let us eite the fields of ordinary and partial differential equations, whieh are dominated by inequalities and variational prineiples involving functions and their derivatives; the many applications of linear inequalities to game theory and mathe­ matieal economics, which have triggered a renewed interest in con­ vexity and moment-space theory; and the growing uses of digital com­ puters, which have given impetus to a systematie study of error esti­ mates involving much sophisticated matrix theory and operator theory. The results presented in the following pages reflect to some extent these ramifications of inequalities into contiguous regions of analysis, but to a greater extent our concem is with inequalities in their native habitat. Since it is elearly impossible to give a connected account of the burst of analytic activity of the last twenty-five years centering about inequalities, we have d. eeided to limit our attention to those topies that have particularly delighted and intrigued us, and to the study of whieh we have contributed.
