Kingship and Favoritism in the Spain of Philip Iii, 1598-1621
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 36.25 $The reign of Philip III of Spain (1598SH1621) has been viewed traditionally as the age when Spain's world power started to wane. This book reappraises this interpretation and demonstrates that this period represented a realignment of Spanish power in world affairs. It also analyzes the career of the Duke of Lerma, Philip III's chief minister, the first of a series of European royal favorites (such as the Duke of Buckingham, Cardinal Richelieu, and the Count-Duke of Olivares) who influenced politics, court culture and the arts during the seventeenth century.

Pinstripe Patronage: Political Favoritism from the Clubhouse to the White House and Beyond [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 135.00 $Political patronage - awarding discretionary favors in exchange for political support - is alive and well in 21st century America. This book examines the little understood patronage system, showing how it is used by 'pinstripe' elites to subvert the democratic process. 'Pinstripe patronage' thrives on the billions of dollars distributed by government for the privatisation of public services. Martin and Susan Tolchin introduce us to government grants specified for the use of an individual, corporation, or community and 'hybrid agencies', with high salaries for top executives and board members. In return for this corporate welfare pinstipe partons giving politicians the ever-increasing funds needed to conduct their political campaigns. As budget cuts begin to bite, the authors argue that it is time to clamp down on the corrupt practice of pinstripe patronage.

El Vaticano Contra Dios
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 34.00 $CENSURED BY THE VATICAN Corruption, conspiracies between high hierarchies, the police and politicians, favoritisms and even murders are brought to light in this investigation. According to the authors, although they knew what was happening, could not avoid it, as they saw themselves surrounded by this game of power. In this book they denounce the distortion of the idea of a modest Church without a need for profit or personal ambitions, and the transformation of the Vatican into a power hungry entity.

American Tariff Controversies in the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 2 of 2
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 24.24 $Excerpt from American Tariff Controversies in the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 2 of 2The public money was distributed among chosen banks in various parts of the country, a disposition of it that had two evil results, of which that of favoritism in the selection of the banks was less important than the other. The requirement that the banks which were allowed to hold public deposits should maintain a specific proportion of their liabilities as a reserve was made an excuse by other banks to pursue a less conservative policy. Banks were organized upon a basis of debt rather than of capi tal, excessive issues of notes were made, there was brisk competition for loans between sound and unsound banks, and the inevitable results of inflation ensued.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Price of a Vote in the Middle East: Clientelism and Communal Politics in Lebanon and Yemen (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 124.78 $Clientelism and ethnic favoritism appear to go hand in hand in many diverse societies in the developing world. However, while some ethnic communities receive generous material rewards for their political support, others receive very modest payoffs. The Price of a Vote in the Middle East examines this key - and often overlooked - component of clientelism. The author draws on elite interviews and original survey data collected during his years of field research in Lebanon and Yemen; two Arab countries in which political constituencies follow sectarian, regional, and tribal divisions. He demonstrates that voters in internally-competitive communal groups receive more, and better, payoffs for their political support than voters trapped in uncompetitive groups dominated by a single, hegemonic leader. Ultimately, politicians provide services when compelled by competitive pressures to do so, whereas leaders sheltered from competition can, and do, take their supporters for granted.
