The Flame (Eridanos Library (New York, N.Y.).)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 80.74 $This powerful novel by Italy's renowned Decadent writer depicts the passionate struggle of two gifted artists for supremacy in love and art. A talented young writer, Stelio Effrena is infatuated with Foscarina, an actress at the peak of her fame. Together they dream of creating an ideal, popular theater. But Stelio's obsession with his own ideas and jealousy of her following steer him away from Foscarina, to ward the attractions of a younger woman. Tormented by this knowledge, Foscarina's love becomes desperate and she is overcome by a sense of foreboding at her own loss of youth. One of the great works of fin-de siecle European literature, The Flame was drawn from D'Annunzio's stormy relationship with Eleonora Duse. Such an exposure of the private lives of two of Italy's most public figures caused a scandal when the book first appeared in 1900.

Walter Knott: Keeper of the Flame
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 140.87 $Mr. and Mrs. Knott still live in the same house they built on the Farm in 1927. Except for the addition of air-conditioning in 1969 the house is today as it always has been - a simple farm home for two people who are oblivious to their own fame and equally unimpressed with it. The home originally stood on ten acres of land surrounded by berry fields. Today, the words "Berry Farm" are misnomers. No berries or other food products have been grown on the Knott acreage since 1965, and the Farm has since spread over a total of 150 acres. In 1972 alone, more than 5 million people visited Knott's Berry Farm making it the second largest tourist attraction in California (Disneyland ranked first). This, of course, marks Walter Knott and his wife , Cordelia, as financially successful. But this is not the yardstick Walter Knott measures the statue of a man. What has been the full range of this man's personal experience? What above all has shaped his thinking and guided his actions? Why is he revered by some on the same level as Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and other great men who believed in a great and free America? To know this thrilling story is to understand the admiration and acclaim that others have for Walter Knott.

The Heart of the Order (Penguin Sports Library)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 50.59 $Baseball’s Most Valuable Writer, Thomas Boswell of The Washington Post, hits a grand slam with this classic collection of heartfelt and humorous pieces on our national’s pastime. The lineup includes “Heroes,” “Managing (Life),” and “The Flame of Fame,” which capture some of the outstanding players in baseball, from DiMaggio, Weaver, and Ozzie Smith to Rose, Sutton, and Gooden; “Five Octobers,” which shows that baseball is a dynamic game in which any team can rise to the top; and the hilarious and memorable “99 Reasons Why Baseball Is Better Than Football” (Reason 20: Eighty degrees, a cold and a short-sleeve shirt are better than 30 degrees, a hip flask, and six layers of clothes under a blanket). And in “The Heart of the Order,” Boswell showcases those players, past and present, who deserve a spot on the All-Star team for their talent and their “governing passion for excellence.” Funny, insightful, and moving, The Heart of the Order confirms that when it comes to baseball, Boswell is in a league by himself. “Boswell is the best all-around writer in America—the literary equivalent of the player who can do it all: run, field, throw, hit, and hit with power.”—The San Diego Union “A wise old catcher once said of baseball, ‘It’s like a church. Many attend, but few understand.’ Boswell’s readers understand. Start with his essay ‘99 Reasons Why Baseball Is Better Than Football.’ Boswell is the 100th reason.”—George Will

Baseball in Orange County (Images of America)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.55 $Organized baseball in Orange County began in the late 1880s when community teams began forming among oil well workers. Around 1900, a farm boy from Kansas named Walter Johnson arrived with his family. Soon, the flame-throwing future hall-of-fame pitcher would be dominating games throughout the county as a star for Fullerton Union High School. As the popularity of baseball grew, more teams and leagues formed in Santa Ana, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, and other cities. Connie Mack brought the Philadelphia Athletics to spring train in Orange County in the 1940s. Joe DiMaggio played for his Santa Ana Air Base team after joining the Army. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, and many other legends visited Orange County over the years. Dozens of well-known players grew up here, and many are laid to rest here. In 1966, the California Angels played their first game in Orange County, where they remain today as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The baseball history in Orange County is rich―and surprising.
