Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931) was a true homo universalis, a Renaissance man best known as a painter, but also an important figure in graphic art and an illustrator, and who designed his own live/work studios, furniture and soft furnishings. Over the course of his fin de siecle career, Gallen-Kallela progressed from realistic naturalism towards symbolism and linearity, progress particularly marked in his painted illustrations of the Scandinavian epic the Kalevala, and in sensitive portraits of subjects including Edvard Munch, Maxim Gorky and his friend Jean Sibelius. In 1999, Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s Lake Keitele (1905) became the first Finnish painting to enter the National Gallery and is now one of the most popular pictures in the collection. Although the artist and his work are relatively unknown to audiences outside of Finland, he was not only a leading figure in modern Finnish painting but an accomplished practitioner of the decorative arts and a key figure in the development of early twentieth-century Modernism.This book focuses on four versions of his shimmering depictions of Lake Keitele, north of Helsinki; a stylized lake composition which first appeared in the early 1880s, when the artist was still elaborating his own descriptive language, and continued to preoccupy him until well into the 1920s. Anne Robbins examines these abstract and modernist pictures in the light of the international avant gardes with which Gallen-Kallela was in contact for much of his career, and the ways in which his work expressed his fervent Finnish nationalism.

Gallen-Kallela is one of the best loved artists in Finland. To the present day his work is highly appreciated in Europe and America. Alongside with Jean Sibelius's music he defines Finnish art at the time of the birth of independent Finland.

Gesine Jordan untersucht vergleichend die Motive und individuellen Handlungsräume dieser weltlichen Wohngäste in den Klöstern St. Gallen und Redon. Laien und Kleriker, die sich aus der Welt zurückzogen und erklärten, sie wollten als Wohngäste der Mönche "nichts als Nahrung und Kleidung" beanspruchen, wählten einen Weg der religiösen Konversion, der nicht über die benediktinische Profess führte. In Alemannien wie in der Bretagne bedeutete jedoch der dauerhafte Aufenthalt an einem heiligen Ort ein Privileg, das nicht allein aufgrund einer Güterschenkung, sondern auch aufgrund eines bestimmten sozialen Ranges gewährt wurde. Auf unterschiedliche und doch in vielem gleichartige Weise verwirklichten die Wohngäste individuelle Annäherungen an die monastische Lebensform und verbanden sich so den Mönchsgemeinschaften noch enger, als es etwa im Rahmen von Gebetsgemeinschaft und Stiftungen möglich war.
