Indifference Arguments (Issues in Ancient Philosophy, 2) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 51.78 $In this book Stephen Makin offers a striking new account of some intriguing but neglected arguments -- indifference arguments -- and of the presocratic atomism underpinned by indifference reasoning. Used by Parmenides, Democritus, Plato, Aristotle and Leibniz as well as some contemporary philosophers, indifference arguments start from claims about a balance of reasons or an absence of asymmetries. While some provide plausible support for surprisingly strong conclusions, others produce no conviction. Here, Makin offers an account of indifference arguments and provides answers to such philosophical questions as a What makes a good piece of indifference reasoninga , a How do the arguments worka , a Do they involve claims about metaphysical commitmentsa The account that is presented of the Democritean atomic theory strongly emphasizes the continuity of atomism with earlier thought. A number of Zenoa s arguments are considered, and there is some discussion of other Eleatics. Indifference arguments in other ancient philosophers, such as Anaximander and Aristotle, also receive attention. The book will be of interest to all those concerned with ancient philosophy and philosophical logic.

The Indifference of Heaven [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 40.00 $Braunbeck's debut as a dark fantasy novelist shows the same passion and originality as his short fiction collection, Things Left Behind (1997)--and the same fearless sidesteps into obscurity. The grim realism of the first chapter belies the unpredictability of what follows: Ohio television news anchor Robert Londregan watches helplessly as his wife, Denise, stricken with catastrophic mysterious symptoms, and their unborn child die in a hospital emergency room. Then things get very weird. Robert is assaulted in the morgue by a man with a hideously deformed face, the fetal corpse disappears and the deformed assailant, who calls himself Rael, informs Robert that Denise, like Rael himself, is one of the Hallover, the guardian angel offspring of humans and repentant fallen angels who are "able to move freely between the Earth of men and the Kingdom of God." The fate of Rael and his kind depend on Denise's return, and Robert is charged with retrieving her in one of the many incarnations she has assumed. Much of this strange mythology is related in preachy parables, since there is no way Robert (or the reader) could possibly parse it from the chaotically orchestrated events. But though Braunbeck puzzles with his plotting, he has a knack for summing up in concise images the abstruse concepts he kicks around--for example, the recurring symbol of Denise's matryoshka, or nesting dolls, which eloquently expresses how a part of her invests every person whom Robert has ever loved. The novel bursts with moving insights about grief turning one's world upside down and about the restorative power of love, and Braunbeck can't be taken to task too severely for expressing them with more feeling than sense. Overcoming Indifference: 10 Key Challenges in Today's Changing World
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 105.41 $The end of the Cold War did not, as some might have hoped, simplify the issues facing world leaders. Civil war, famine, overpopulation, chronic unemployment, and an exploding refugee problem continue to plague the world economy, to the point where we begin to wonder whether national boundaries can contain such crises, or whether the challenges that face the world are beyond the reach of the leaders we have elected. Has the increasing disparity between the haves and the have nots, between the knows and don't knows led to an unbridgeable gap between rich and poor peoples and rich and poor countries? Overcoming Indifference offers contributions from Nobel Prize winners, statesmen, scholars and university professors, and chief executive officers of major industrial corporations. The contributors include such well-known and disparate thinkers as Elie Wiesel, Samuel P. Huntington, Michael Hammer, and Carl Sagan. Highlighting subjects as diverse as the new information society, methods of creating sufficient employment, the disintegration of previously held value systems, and the maintenance of global security in the post-Cold War world, the contributors, propose the best possible courses of action.

Agamben and Indifference : A Critical Overview
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 39.58 $Since the publication of Homo Sacer in 1995, Giorgio Agamben has become one of the world’s most revered and controversial thinkers. His ideas on our current political situation have found supporters and enemies in almost equal measure. His wider thoughts on topics such as language, potentiality, life, law, messianism and aesthetics have had significant impact on such diverse fields as philosophy, law, theology, history, sociology, cultural studies and literary studies.Yet although Agamben is much read, his work has also often been misunderstood. This book is the first to fully take into account Agamben’s important recent publications, which clarify his method, complete his ideas on power, and finally reveal the role of language in his overall system. William Watkin presents a critical overview of Agamben’s work that, through the lens of indifference, aims to give a portrait of exactly why this thinker of indifferent and suspensive legal, political, ontological and living states can rightfully be considered one of the most important philosophers in the world today.

The Time of Indifference: A Novel
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 33.18 $IN 1929, THE FIFTH YEAR of the Fascist era and the twenty-first year of Alberto Moravia's life, the Italian literary world was stunned by the appearance of his first novel, The Time of Indifference. It was a deceptively simple story - five characters, the events of a few days, the intrigues of families and lovers. The place is Rome. The central figure is Michele, a young man in confused but furious rebellion against the emptiness of bourgeois life. His father is dead; his mother, Mariagrazia, desperately clings to her bored lover, Leo; his sister has no hope of marriage or career and bleakly prepares to give herself to Leo as well. A frequent visitor is Leo's former lover, Lisa, ostensibly Mariagrazia's friend, a woman who feels she is in the final late bloom before age destroys beauty. She longs to make Michele her lover, but he is bored and disgusted by her pretenses, her vanity, her desperation. All five are cast loose on the sea of modern life - obsessed with what they want, what they feel they are owed, the wrongs that have been done them, their loneliness. What Moravia destroys forever in this pitiless novel is the illusion that a world of ever-growing material comfort can ever feed the human soul.

The Banality of Indifference (Zionism and the Armenian Genocide)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.91 $The genocide of Armenians by Turks during the First World War was one of the most horrendous deeds of modern times and a precursor of the genocidal acts that have marked the rest of the twentieth century. Despite the worldwide attention the atrocities received at the time, the massacre has not remained a part of the world's historical consciousness. The parallels between the Jewish and Armenian situations and the reactions of the Jewish community in Palestine (the Yishuv) to the Armenian genocide, which was muted and largely self-interested, are explored by Yair Auron. In attempting to assess and interpret these disparate reactions, Auron maintains a fairminded balance in assessing claims of altruism and self-interest, expressed in universal, not merely Jewish, terms. While not denying the uniqueness of the Holocaust, Auron carefully distinguishes it from the Armenian genocide reviewing existing theories and relating Armenian and Jewish experience to ongoing issues of politics and identity. As a groundbreaking work of comparative history, this volume will be read by Armenian area specialists, historians of Zionism and Israel, and students of genocide. Yair Auron is senior lecturer at The Open University of Israel and the Kibbutzim College of Education. He is the author, in Hebrew, of Jewish-Israeli Identity, Sensitivity to World Suffering: Genocide in the Twentieth Century, We Are All German Jews, and Jewish Radicals in France during the Sixties and Seventies (published in French as well)
