This book examines the Shoah in the Lublin District. Its analysis traces forced population movements and forced labor, constants in German policy, the bitter early memory of which influenced Jews later actions. Many hid or fled the deportations to death camps and forced labor, fearing an extreme return of the earlier experience, unable to grasp the Final Solution. Lublin was a contradictory district - few ghettos yet little survival.

Am 30. Juni 1981 endete der grosste Strafprozess der deutschen Rechtsgeschichte – das Majdanek-Verfahren in Dusseldorf. Das im Herbst 1941 auf dem Majdanek-Hugel sudlich von Lublin errichtete Konzentrationslager Lublin-Majdanek war das erste Konzentrationslager, das die Alliierten befreiten. Als am 23. Juli 1944 sowjetische und polnische Soldaten das Lagergelande betraten, fanden sie Beweise fur einen Massenmord von bis dahin unvorstellbarem Ausmass vor. Noch im August 1944 wurde eine Kommission zur Untersuchung nationalsozialistischer Verbrechen eingerichtet. Ebenfalls noch im August erliess die polnische Ubergangsregierung das erste Gesetz zur Ahndung von NS-Verbrechen. Der erste KZ-Prozess fand schliesslich von 27. November bis 2. Dezember 1944 vor dem Sonderstrafgericht Lublin statt. Ein in Graz vorbereiteter osterreichischer Majdanek-Prozess fand hingegen nicht statt. Nach fast zehnjahrigen Ermittlungen gegen 64 Tatverdachtige beantragte die Staatsanwaltschaft Graz im Oktober 1972 die Einstellung des Verfahrens. Erst im Jahr 2007 sah sich die osterreichische Justiz veranlasst, die Mittaterschaft osterreichischer Verdachtiger an Verbrechen in Majdanek zu untersuchen. Doch auch hier scheiterte eine Anklageerhebung am Tod der Beschuldigten Erna Wallisch. In dem anlasslich des 30. Jahrestags des Urteils im Dusseldorfer Majdanek-Prozess erschienenen Buch wird unter anderem der Frage nachgegangen, in welchem Ausmass Staatsanwaltschaften und Gerichte in Osterreich, Deutschland und Polen dazu beigetragen haben, die Verbrechen im KZ Lublin-Majdanek aufzuklaren.

The author Igor Nebolsin continues with his detailed chronology of the 2nd Guards Tank Armys combat operations. This volume includes the hard fighting outside of Warsaw in the summer of 1944; the 1st Belorussian Fronts winter offensive in the Vistula Oder operation and the ensuing combat in Pomerania; and the final assault on Berlin, when the 2nd Guards Tank Army enveloped the German capital from the north and entered the city from north and west, fighting its way to the Tiergarten Park in the heart of Berlin. The author also briefly discusses the 2nd Guards Tank Armys subsequent history as part of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany, its eventual disbanding in 1997, and its reconstitution four years later on 4 September 2001. As with the first volume, the author s study is based upon the Armys operational documents from the Central Archives of the Russian Defense Ministry and recollections of its veterans, and received the active cooperation of Major-General Anatoly Shvebig, who was formerly a deputy commander of the 2nd Guards Tank Army s 12th Guards Tank Corps. During World War II Samuel (Mietek) Gruber was one of the Jews in Europe who actively fought against the Nazi overlords. Serving in the Polish army at the outbreak of the war, he was taken prisoner by the Germans and interned near the Lublin ghetto. With a handful of other Jewish prisoners of war, he organized an escape and took it to the woods, where he helped organize a unit of Jewish partisan fighters.The former town and city dwellers candidly admit that, initially, life as fugitives in the woods held terrors they had not known even in the Nazi prison camp. The screams of small animals in the night, the unearthly shriek that turns out to be only the scraping of a loose branch against a tree trunk, leave them frankly quaking with fear.But within months Gruber and his ragtag band of fellow prisoners, some of them barely past adolescence, mature into a well-disciplined unit of freedom fighters. They engage in daring exploits, including sabotage operations against German military transports and clashes with units of the regular German army. Living with the death every day gives the partisans the courage to attempt the impossible.

Eleven critics here discuss the main themes in Singer’s novels and short stories as well as examine in depth his works that have been translated into English—the novels Satan in Goray, The Family Moskat, The Magician of Lublin, The Slave, The Manor, In My Father’s Court, and a short story “Gimpel the Fool.” Each of the contributors, well-known writers in their own areas of specialization, was invited to examine, not to proclaim or protest, Singer’s work, and these essays appear in print for the first time. In her Introduction Marcia Allentuck traces the growth of Singer’s reputation during the past decade and considers the essays themselves, pointing out the reason for the organization of the book—from discussion of main themes to consideration of individual works. The first four essays are devoted to general discussions of Singer’s writings; the remaining essays to critical discus­sions of individual works. With one exception they are arranged according to the chronology of the appearance of Singer’s works in English translation, the exception being “Gimpel the Fool,” the “jewel of Singer’s crown,” placed last.

Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II) was a professor of anthropology and ethics at the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland long before he was elected Pope. During this time, his interests centered around the concept of personhood and its many implications in the epistemological, metaphysical and ethical spheres. In this book, after considering the many philosophical and theological influences that helped to form his thought, his notion of personhood is discussed with reference to the status of unborn persons, that is of embryological and fetal life. His approach to personhood is then contrasted and compared with other contemporary notions in an effort to understand more clearly the status of life before birth.
