In this study of poetry written in languages other than the poet's native tongue Professor Forster begins with a general survey of multilingualism and its effects on literature. This is followed by a survey of medieval examples, with the main emphasis on Latin as lingua franca and language of scholarship. In the nineteenth century the concept of language as a function of nationality arose and 'language-loyalty' came to play an important part. With Dadaism and Surrealism language once again became simply material with which the poet worked and in principle any language was as good as another. Professor Forster examines with particular attention works by Milton, Stefan George, Rilke, T. S. Eliot and James Joyce. His discussion leads to more general questions of the relationship between the poet and his medium.

Adapting critical approaches and concepts from New Literacy Studies, historical sociolinguistics, and close reading, Amsler analyses how late medieval writing and literacies in Latin, English, and French 'make people up' to create literate subjects and agents (readers and writers) in multilingual manuscript cultures. Amsler argues that textual interactions make sense only when we take the 'social turn' and examine reading and writing not as individual practices toward discrete texts, but as part of wider multilingual, socio-cultural practices that could either sustain or challenge dominant ideologies and reading formations. Rather than a singular Literacy, we see socially situated literacies. In late medieval society, both traditional and new literates assumed different relationships between and among Latin, the vernaculars, and hybrid written forms. Amsler explores the intertextualities and social contests embedded in these forms, bringing new historical dimensions to literacy studies. The individual chapters in this volume examine literacies as cultural practice in elite and popular texts and also in schooling. They consider texts by Chaucer, Christine de Pizan, Dante, Margery Kempe, devotional writers, Erasmus, and the Jewish convert Hermann of Scheda alongside grammatical writing, mythography, charms, drama, and educational texts. This volume sets individual Latin and vernacular works within historical and linguistic contexts, which illustrates the diversity of late medieval multilingual writing, performance, and embodied reading.

Linguistic Landscapes is the first comprehensive approach to a largely under-explored sociolinguistic phenomenon: language on signs. Based on an up-to-date review of previous research from various places around the world, the book develops an analytical framework for the systematic analysis of linguistic landscape data. This framework is applied to a sample of 2,444 signs collected in 28 survey areas in central Tokyo. Analytical categories include the languages contained and their combinations, differences between official and nonofficial signs, geographic distribution, availability of translation or transliteration, linguistic idiosyncrasies, and the comparison of older and newer signs, among others. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods, the analysis yields some unique insights about the writers of multilingual signs, their readers, and the languages and scripts in contact. Linguistic Landscapes thus demonstrates that the study of language on signs has much to contribute to research into urban multilingualism, as well as the study of language and society as a whole.
