During the academic year 1980-1981 I was teaching at the Technion-the Israeli Institute of Technology-in Haifa. The audience was small, but con­ sisted of particularly gifted and eager listeners; unfortunately, their back­ ground varied widely. I decided to discuss representations of natural integers as sums of squares, starting on the most elementary level, but with the inten­ tion of pushing ahead as far as possible in some of the different directions that offered themselves (quadratic forms, theory of genera, generalizations and modern developments, etc.), according to the interests of the audience. A few weeks after the start of the academic year I received a letter from Professor Gian-Carlo Rota, with the suggestion that I submit a manuscript for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences under his editorship. I answered that I did not have a ready manuscript to offer, but that I could use my notes on representations of integers by sums of squares as the basis for one. As such, it is the official template from which all subsequent uniforms were derived. Found in the Library of the Royal Armouries, Leeds, the book shows the uniforms and accoutrements of the Gentlemen Pensioners and the Yeomen of the Guard, the Household Cavalry and the Cavalry, including the Carbineers and the Dragoons. It also includes the dress of the 1st Foot Guards (Grenadier Guards), the Coldstream Guards and the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards (Scots Guards). The line regiments are also fully covered, from the Queen’s Regiment, the King’s Regiment, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and all the other line regiments then established in the British Army. The Cloathing Book also includes ten regiments of Marines and the Regiment of Invalids. Each plate shows the uniform of the regiment in full, together with (where applicable) horse coverings and the colours of the regiment. This is an exceptional find for Naval and Military Press, and is recommended to all historians of the British Army, and of its uniforms and accoutrements in general. The colour plates are superbly reproduced exactly as they appear in the original, which has been professionally scanned for colour matching.

The figure of the «Muslim» woman or girl performs a crucial role in far-reaching socio-political debates in Germany. Indeed, such figures challenge the boundaries of gender equality and secularism and contest notions of tolerance and integration. The (in)visibility of Muslim women’s bodies and their apparent position in Islam function as ostensible indicators of their oppression and of Islam’s supposed incompatibility with western values. This book investigates representations of «Muslim» women and girls in German popular culture from 1990 to 2015. The study analyses the discursive function of such figures in German popular culture via three key research questions: what representational practices surround the figure of the Muslim woman or girl in German life writing, young adult literature and film? How do such representations function to produce «non-Muslim» subject positions? What is the function of this figure within narratives of feminism and assertions of gender equality? This study understands itself as an intervention into contemporary racist discourses in Germany and operates within a transdisciplinary framework of intersectional feminism and cultural and German studies. Ultimately, the book aims to make visible and interrogatethe underlying hierarchies and agendas that drive representations of Muslim women and girls. This book was the winner of the of the 2017 Early Career Researcher Prize in German Studies, a collaboration between the Institute for German Studies at the University of Birmingham and Peter Lang.

Unprecedented judicial intervention overturned gerrymanders in stunning decisions that electrified the public but intensified rather than resolved political conflict and uncertainty. Ultimately, America's political ideal of representative democracy was frustrated by its own political institutions, including the courts, because their decisions against gerrymandering in the 1890s helped parties and legislatures entrench the practice as a basic and profoundly undemocratic feature of American politics in the twentieth century.
