Theism
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 117.78 $In this book, I discuss the question whether God exists, not as a Tillichian religious symbol, but as an actual person, albeit a person who is very different from you and me. My procedure is to examine arguments bdth for and against God's existence qua person and to assess their relative merits. I shall try to show that there is more evidence that God exists than that he does not. This position is, of course, rejected nowadays, even by most religious thinkers, who hold, for one reason or another, that evidence has nothing to do with religious belief, properly understood. My reply to these thinkers is simply to ask them to examine what follows. A useful companion to Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7, and the Appendix of this book would be Alvin Plantinga's The Nature of Necessity.l Though I avoid technical terminology wherever possible, those chapters presuppose an elementary understanding of 'possible worlds' discourse; and a clear and concise explanation of that terminology can be found in Chapter IV of Plantinga's book. Also, I use 'logical' throughout to mean what Plantinga means by 'broadly logical' on page 2 of The Nature of Necessity.

Theism, Atheism, and Big Bang Cosmology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 86.44 $Contemporary science presents us with the remarkable theory that the universe began to exist about fifteen billion years ago with a cataclysmic explosion called "the Big Bang." The question of whether Big Bang cosmology supports theism or atheism has long been a matter of discussion among the general public and in popular science books, but has received scant attention from philosophers. This book sets out to fill this gap by means of a sustained debate between two philosophers, William Lane Craig and Quentin Smith, who defend opposing positions. Craig argues that the Big Bang that began the universe was created by God, while Smith argues that the Big Bang has no cause. Alternating chapters by the two philosophers criticize and attempt to refute preceding arguments. Their arguments are based on Einstein's theory of relativity and include a discussion of the new quantum cosmology recently developed by Stephen Hawking and popularized in A Brief History of Time.

The Resurrection of Theism: Prolegomena to Christian Apology
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.08 $"The Christian world view," contends the author, "both needs and embodies a thoroughgoing, rational apologetic as a manifestation of its relevance to the contemporary mind. . . . Christian faith should be defended in terms of criteria which center in rational objectivity as the norm of truth and evaluation." The author, who stands in the tradition of Aquinas, Butler, Orr, and Tennant, deals first with the problem of epistemological approach (part 1). Then he tackles the apologetic of natural revelation, first setting forth the inadequacy of every major alternate to rational empiricism (part 2), then demonstrating the existence of the God of theism (part 3). Each chapter is well outlined, and these outlines appear together in an "Analytical Table of Contents." This feature, as well as a bibliography and index, makes this a useful textbook for courses in apologetics and philosophy.

Christian Theism and the Problems of Philosophy
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 48.73 $Alvin Plantinga has done much to stimulate the resurgence of interest in the philosophy of religion. This collection of essays is written in response to his seminal paper Advice to Christian Philosophers, in which he issues a powerful, and inevitably controversial, challenge to religious philosophers to serve their own religious communities more faithfully. Plantinga advises Christian philosophers to expend more effort on issues of importance to the particular, concrete Christian communities of which they are members. In addition he urges them to use their distinctively theistic and Christian perspectives in working in the many traditional areas of philosophy, a task on which the present volume focuses.Christian Theism and the Problems of Philosophy begins by presenting Plantingas essay, and the chapters that follow address issues in three traditional areas of interest to philosophers: epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics. The first section Epistemology and Theism contains essays by Alvin Plantinga, Jonathan Kvanvig, Richard Otte, and Stephen Wykstra. The next section Metaphysics and Theism has essays by Linda Zagzebski, Del Ratzsch, Christopher Menzel, Charles Taliaferro, and Eleonore Stump. The final group, including Philip L. Quinn, William P. Alston, Scott MacDonald, and Carlton D. Fisher, addresses the subject of Moral Theory and Theism. While certainly intended for Christian philosophers, other instructors and students of philosophy will be interested as well because the book discusses several traditional philosophical issues in innovative ways, such as the nature of justification, the nature of probability, scientific rationality, religious rationality, the logic of counterfactuals, free will and moral responsibility, among others.

Canonical Theism : A Proposal for Theology and the Church
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 26.42 $The bold thesis of Canonical Theism is that the good and life-giving Holy Spirit has equipped the church not only with a canon of scripture but also with an abundant canonical heritage of materials, persons, and practices.
