The Waffen-SS in Normandy Format: Paperback
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.06 $For many, the Waffen-SS soldier represents the archetype of the combatant, if not the warrior: well-armed, well-trained, possessing intelligence in combat, imbued with political and ideological fanaticism, he is an elite soldier par excellence, even if a lack of scruples casts a long shadow. However, is this picture true? In the case of the Battle of Normandy, opinions diverged, not only among today's historians, but also amongst the German generals at the time.In all, the Waffen-SS fielded six divisions during the Battle of Normandy, as well as two heavy battalions of Tiger tanks. But they were by no means a single homogenous entity, for with the exception of II. SS-Panzerkorps, the divisions arrived at the front one after another and were immediately thrown into battle. This volume in the Casemate Illustrated series examines the Waffen-SS in Normandy during the fierce fighting of June 1944, when they struggled to hold back the Allied advance on Caen, though the picture was by no means one-sided. Extensively illustrated with photographs, tank profiles, maps, and accompanied by biographies of key personnel and explanatory text boxes, this volume gives a clear and accessible account of events, challenging some popular perceptions along the way.

Waffen-SS KURSK 1943 Volume 6 (Archive Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 83.21 $High-quality photographs on semi-matte art paper. Visual diary of Hitler's elite force. Presented in chronological sequence This sixth volume follows soldiers of the 1st SS LAH and 2nd SS Das Reich Panzer Division in combat during the Battle of Kursk, July 1943. Formed by Heinrich Himmler in 1940 from the Leibstandarte, SS Verfungstruppe and the Totenkopfe Standarten, the Waffen-SS was originally meant to be a racially pure organisation, but this idea was abandoned due to the need for more troops. While initially intended to concentrate on internal matters that threatened Germany, the Waffen-SS mainly served as frontline combat troops alongside the regular German army. They were considered the elite of the German armed forces in World War II and were involved in almost continuous combat. Printed on deluxe European semi-matte art paper for unparalleled photographic reproduction, each page literally pulls you into the images, making you feel as though you are a part of the action. This documentary-style series presents the photographs in the actual sequence in which they were taken, creating a visual diary unlike anything previously published on the subject.

Waffen SS: The Asphalt Soldiers
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 57.41 $The subject matter is fascinating. The photos are outstanding. The author, John Keegan, has the credentials and the big reputation; he has done as much as any historian on earth to resurrect military history over the last 30 to 40 years. But I will say - and I realize this is a distinctly minority view - I don't find Keegan to be a particularly readable historian. His writing style seems at times to be like a thicket that one must hack through, labor through, to arrive at the destination. There's a Victorian stiffness to his prose. The complexity of his sentences almost seems to have a cutesy aspect to it, a show-off aspect to it, an "I Am Erudite" quality to it. Well, he is erudite, but that's only half the battle when it comes to achieving excellence as a writer. (Amazon customer)

Waffen-SS Tiger Crews at Kursk (Hardcover)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 31.42 $Hardcover. Kursk is often labeled the "Greatest Tank Battle in History". The Wehrmacht fielded a total of just 120 Tiger tanks during the engagement, including 35 from the 2nd SS Panzer Corps. This corps comprised of the three most controversial divisions of the Second World War: Leibstandarte, Das Reich, and Totenkopf. The war crimes committed by these units (at places like Oradour, Malmedy, and Le Paradis) remain contentious topics of discussion to this day, and their fighting qualities have been analyzed for decades. By examining a focused group of men in great detail, specifically the 226 Tiger crewmen at Kursk, the author provides an insight into the sprawling and enigmatic organization that was the Waffen-SS. This project aims to scrape away the mythology surrounding the most feared soldiers, who crewed the most iconic tank, at one of the most vicious battles of the Second World War. AUTHOR: Colonel French L. MacLean, United States Army (Ret.), has written 12 books on World War II, including a two-volume set on Stalingrad, a two-volume set on the Luftwaffe, Donitz's Crews, and, recently, American Hangman, the amazing story of US Army MSgt. John C. Woods. 120 b/w photographs and maps Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Waffen SS: The encyclopedia
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 63.29 $World War II spawned some of the most famous - and infamous - fighting organizations the world has ever known. None was more feared by its battlefield foes or more hated by political enemies of the Nazi regime than the Waffen-SS. Six decades after the last SS unit capitulated or was annihilated, the facts about many aspects of this organization are still shrouded in legend and half-truth. Loathed by many as a criminal organization, yet admired by some for the esprit, resolve, and valor of its component units and individuals, the Waffen-SS was unarguably a highly-complex, multi-faceted phenomenon, unique among the military organizations of the world. Marc Rikmenspoel, author of Soldiers of the Waffen-SS: Many Nations, One Motto, has crafted the ultimate reference for those trying to understand the intensely controversial and complicated nature of the Waffen-SS. A comprehensive overview that will be useful to historians, buffs, wargamers, and re-enactors alike, no matter what your predisposition to the Waffen-SS, you will learn a great deal from this book. The book includes a concise history of every one of the major fighting formations of the Waffen-SS (those designated as "divisions"). Sections include: * Formations * Structure of Divisions * Germans * Germanics * Non-Germans and Non-Germanics * Leading Personalities * Weapons * Misconceptions and Controversies * Weapons Tables

The Waffen Ss in the East
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.55 $This is the illustrated history of the Waffen SS on the Eastern Front. The life and death of the Waffen SS can be traced in the surviving photographs, and the brooding saga of the decline from triumph into disaster is told through these powerful images, which clearly document the reality of combat on the Russian Front. From 1943 to 1945, the Waffen SS in the East were engaged in a long and bloody retreat against a numerically far superior enemy. As they fell back across the vast plains of the Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary and ultimately Germany itself, death or ignominious defeat at the hands of the Red Army became their fate. But the Waffen SS, true to their character, fought a fanatical rearguard action to the end. In the process, they showed utterly heroic if increasingly futile acts of bravery against overwhelming odds. These events are encapsulated in this excellent selection of evocative images introduced and described by historian and author Nicholas Milton. Essential reading for anyone with an interest in the course of the war in the East and the role played by the Waffen SS.
