Wargaming
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 23.69 $Wargaming is concerned with simulating historical conflicts through the medium of miniature figures fighting battles over three dimensional terrain, their movement and combat being regulated by rules which create historically accurate battles. Since the 1950s, the hobby has grown exponentially and now enjoys a widespread following across the world. Wargaming Campaigns
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 112.65 $Most miniature wargames take the form of simulating a single battle with the opponents either winning or losing and that's that until the next game. Such games can be a fun test of tactical skill but it can be even more rewarding if they form part of a wider campaign. In a campaign, the players commanding the forces have to make the decisions at the strategic level that determine the context of any battles that occur. The outcome of these battles will, in turn, have strategic consequences for the ongoing campaign. Although campaigns can be very rewarding, many wargamers are deterred by the need to produce maps and devise mechanisms for strategic movement, Intelligence, logistics, recruiting reinforcements, keeping track of casualties etc. Henry Hyde's excellent book greatly eases this task with masses of sound advice, concrete suggestions and even a full set of campaign rules useful for any period up to AD 1900. 'Whatever historical or fantasy setting your prefer, Henry shows that even simple campaigns can add extra fun to your gaming.

Wargaming Pioneers Including Little Wars by H.g. Wells, the War Game for Boy Scouts and the War Game by Captain Sachs 1898-1940 Early Wargames Vol. 1
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 21.86 $Prior to Donald Featherstone publishing his classic book War Games in 1962, there were numerous attempts, by other authors, to create realistic wargames. H.G. Wells's 1913 Little Wars, was the best known early wargaming book, although only one of a number of early wargaming rules. The many similarities in these rules indicate that H.G. Wells was clearly familiar with some of these when devising his own rules. This book contains selected key wargames all written between 1898 and 1940 including: Notes on the Robert Louis Stevenson Game (1898) The Great Wargame (1908) War Games for Boy Scouts (1910) Little Wars (1913) by HG Wells Sham Battle 1929 (Extract) by Lt. Dowdall and Gleason Mechano Artillery Duel (1932) The Liddell Hart Wargame (1935) Captain Sachs War Game (1940)

Napoleonic Wargaming (Airfix Magazine Guide 4) [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 98.95 $Family-owned bookshop in Steubenville, Ohio. Books shipped within 24 hours. VERY GOOD+ 1st Edition (October 1974) No marks or writing observed in text. Binding tight and square. Gently read. No dust jacket as issued. . . . . TABLE OF CONTENTS: 1.) First things first -- 2.) Napoleonic army organization -- 3.) Into battle! -- 4.) Napoleonic strategy and tactics -- 5.) Organizing a wargames campaign -- 6.) Playing rules -- 7.) Miscellaneous. . . . . . . I first had this book in the seventies. I lost my copy during numerous moves since then. It is every bit as useful as I remembered it to be. For me it provided a great revision tutorial since I had not wargamed in this period of history since the eighties. I am sure it would still provide the same excellent introduction to wargaming and in particular wargaming in this era for the newcomer and a useful reference for the experienced. It is far removed from the electronic version of wargame simulations that are available today and hopefully could tempt the newcomer into the delights of 'real' wargaming with your own figures. Choosing your own army (Austrians for me), painting, organizing and controlling your troops in battle, or for the more adventurous over a campaign. The rules which are included are, as the author states, not everyone's cup of tea although I do like them. I particularly like the attempt to differentiate between troops from different armies in both temperament and ability. Overall it is exactly what a beginner needs and a fine set of rules for all. The only downside is the scarcity of copies makes it a bit on the expensive side. -- John H.

How to Master Wargaming (Paperback)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 27.22 $Paperback. This handbook focuses on three items: First, how to improve and develop the cognitive skill of visualizing, a key component to COA analysis (wargaming); second, improving the methods and conduct of action, reaction, and counteraction adjudication of COA analysis with off-the-shelf wargames; and third, thoughts on training the staff. COA analysis is similar to any collective skill, and is perishable if not continually trained and rehearsed. Therefore, it is the purpose of this handbook to provide thoughts on how to develop individuals and staffs so they can better conduct COA analysis during the military decisionmaking process.Wargaming is a disciplined process, with rules and steps that attempt to visualize the flow of the operation, given the force's strengths and dispositions, threats, capabilities, and possible COAs, impact and requirements of civilians in the area of operations (AO), and other aspects of the situation. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Painting Wargaming Figures
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.16 $Javier Gomez, a highly talented figure painter of long experience and excellent reputation, shares the secrets of his success in this accessible 'how-to' guide to painting miniatures. He takes the reader step-by-step through the whole process, from choice of materials (unlike other available guides it is not linked to any specific figure manufacturer) and preparation of the miniatures to basing and even advice on photographing the finished item. Techniques such as dry-brushing, ink-washing, shading and highlighting are all explained clearly with the help of step-by-step photographs and color charts. Specific case studies tackle a variety of useful subjects across all periods, such as mixing realistic flesh tones for different races; painting horses; guns and limbers; Medieval heraldry; Napoleonic uniforms; WW2 and modern camouflage patterns. Javier also clearly explains how these techniques and processes can be applied to all the major wargaming scales, from 40mm down to 6mm. Whatever historical period (or Sci-fi/Fantasy) and whatever scale the reader is interested in, this book is an invaluable source of practical advice and inspiration.
