At 6:30 a.m. on 27 January 1945, Col. Friedrich von Lindeiner, the court martialed and exiled "gentleman" ex-Commandant of Stalag Luft Iii, sat in the waiting room of the Görlitz train station hoping to return to Sagan, Germany, to fight the approaching Russians. The distance from Görlitz to Sagan was 28.5 miles. He arrived fifteen hours later as 10,000 Allied prisoners of war were evacuating his former camp. Like them, he would soon view the war from both inside and outside the barbed wire. Later, as a prisoner of war, he was held by the British for two years before returning to a devastated and divided Germany.

After 1933, despite being half-Jewish according to the Nuremberg Laws, Oppenheim was not persecuted by the Nazis. In fact, he placed his knowledge of the Middle East and his connections with Muslim leaders at the service of the regime. Following his death in 1931, von Gloeden's collection of over three thousand glass plate negatives was left to his longtime friend and model, Pancrazio Bucini. When Mussolini's fascists entered Taormina in 1936, the negatives were seized and Bucini was accused of 'keeping pornography.' Though Bucini was acquitted, the negatives were not returned until after World War II-few of the plates survived."

Recently conserved to its original glory, this magnificent suit of armor, made for a trusted courtier, diplomat, and commander of infantry units for the Habsburgs, deceives the eye: the steel sleeves drape in graceful folds, with cuts in the surface, suggesting the armor is made from cloth rather than metal. The author of this fascinating volume explores the question: why does the armor look this way? Stefan Krause delves back five centuries to the political, social, and cultural context in which von Rogendorf lived. Among other key venues in the Holy Roman Empire, this story takes the reader to the court of Emperor Charles V in Spain and to Augsburg, the leading center of armor making, where Rogendorf was introduced to the court armorer of Charles V, Kolman Helmschmid (1471-1532). Helmschmid was famous for his inventive and masterfully sculptured works, and this book elaborates on his unique contributions to the history of armor, and how and why von Rogendorf's suit was informed by contemporary fashion.
