Universitäten Und Wissenschaften Im Mitteldeutschen Raum in Der Frühen Neuzeit. Ehrenkolloquium Zum 80.
Topology for Physicists (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 184.37 $In recent years topology has firmly established itself as an important part of the physicist's mathematical arsenal. Topology has profound relevance to quantum field theory-for example, topological nontrivial solutions of the classical equa tions of motion (solitons and instantons) allow the physicist to leave the frame work of perturbation theory. The significance of topology has increased even further with the development of string theory, which uses very sharp topologi cal methods-both in the study of strings, and in the pursuit of the transition to four-dimensional field theories by means of spontaneous compactification. Im portant applications of topology also occur in other areas of physics: the study of defects in condensed media, of singularities in the excitation spectrum of crystals, of the quantum Hall effect, and so on. Nowadays, a working knowledge of the basic concepts of topology is essential to quantum field theorists; there is no doubt that tomorrow this will also be true for specialists in many other areas of theoretical physics. The amount of topological information used in the physics literature is very large. Most common is homotopy theory. But other subjects also play an important role: homology theory, fibration theory (and characteristic classes in particular), and also branches of mathematics that are not directly a part of topology, but which use topological methods in an essential way: for example, the theory of indices of elliptic operators and the theory of complex manifolds.

Homology (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 184.28 $In presenting this treatment of homological algebra, it is a pleasure to acknowledge the help and encouragement which I have had from all sides. Homological algebra arose from many sources in algebra and topology. Decisive examples came from the study of group extensions and their factor sets, a subject I learned in joint work with OTTO SCHIL LING. A further development of homological ideas, with a view to their topological applications, came in my long collaboration with SAMUEL ElLENBERG; to both collaborators, especial thanks. For many years the Air Force Office of Scientific Research supported my research projects on various subjects now summarized here; it is a pleasure to acknowledge their lively understanding of basic science. Both REINHOLD BAER and JOSEF SCHMID read and commented on my entire manuscript; their advice has led to many improvements. ANDERS KOCK and JACQUES RIGUET have read the entire galley proof and caught many slips and obscurities. Among the others whose sug gestions have served me well, I note FRANK ADAMS, LOUIS AUSLANDER, WILFRED COCKCROFT, ALBRECHT DOLD, GEOFFREY HORROCKS, FRIED RICH KASCH, JOHANN LEICHT, ARUNAS LIULEVICIUS, JOHN MOORE, DIE TER PUPPE, JOSEPH YAO, and a number of my current students at the University of Chicago - not to m~ntion the auditors of my lectures at Chicago, Heidelberg, Bonn, Frankfurt, and Aarhus. My wife, DOROTHY, has cheerfully typed more versions of more chapters than she would like to count. Messrs.

Metric Spaces of Non-Positive Curvature (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften, 319)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 115.56 $A description of the global properties of simply-connected spaces that are non-positively curved in the sense of A. D. Alexandrov, and the structure of groups which act on such spaces by isometries. The theory of these objects is developed in a manner accessible to anyone familiar with the rudiments of topology and group theory: non-trivial theorems are proved by concatenating elementary geometric arguments, and many examples are given. Part I provides an introduction to the geometry of geodesic spaces, while Part II develops the basic theory of spaces with upper curvature bounds. More specialized topics, such as complexes of groups, are covered in Part III.

Analysis and Geometry of Markov Diffusion Operators (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften, 348)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 88.33 $The present volume is an extensive monograph on the analytic and geometric aspects of Markov diffusion operators. It focuses on the geometric curvature properties of the underlying structure in order to study convergence to equilibrium, spectral bounds, functional inequalities such as Poincaré, Sobolev or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, and various bounds on solutions of evolution equations. At the same time, it covers a large class of evolution and partial differential equations. The book is intended to serve as an introduction to the subject and to be accessible for beginning and advanced scientists and non-specialists. Simultaneously, it covers a wide range of results and techniques from the early developments in the mid-eighties to the latest achievements. As such, students and researchers interested in the modern aspects of Markov diffusion operators and semigroups and their connections to analytic functional inequalities, probabilistic convergence to equilibrium and geometric curvature will find it especially useful. Selected chapters can also be used for advanced courses on the topic.

Quadratic Forms and Hecke Operators (Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wissenschaften 286)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 133.25 $The numerous explicit formulae of the classical theory of quadratic forms revealed remarkable multiplicative properties of the numbers of integral representations of integers by positive definite integral quadratic forms. These properties were explained by the original theory of Hecke operators. As regards the integral representations of quadratic forms in more than one variable by quadratic forms, no multiplicative properties were known at that time, and so there was nothing to explain. However, the idea of Hecke operators was so natural and attractive that soon attempts were made to cultivate it in the neighbouring field of modular forms of several variables. The approach has proved to be fruitful; in particular, a number of multiplicative properties of integral representations of quadratic forms by quadratic forms were eventually discovered. By now the theory has reached a certain maturity, and the time has come to give an up-to-date report in a concise form, in order to provide a solid ground for further development. The purpose of this book is to present in the form of a self-contained text-book the contemporary state of the theory of Hecke operators on the spaces of hoi om orphic modular forms of integral weight (the Siegel modular forms) for congruence subgroups of integral symplectic groups. The book can also be used for an initial study of modular forms of one or several variables and theta-series of positive definite integral quadratic forms.

Algebra: Rings, Modules And Categories I (Grundlehren Der Mathematischen Wissenschaften)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 70.07 $VI of Oregon lectures in 1962, Bass gave simplified proofs of a number of "Morita Theorems", incorporating ideas of Chase and Schanuel. One of the Morita theorems characterizes when there is an equivalence of categories mod-A R::! mod-B for two rings A and B. Morita's solution organizes ideas so efficiently that the classical Wedderburn-Artin theorem is a simple consequence, and moreover, a similarity class [AJ in the Brauer group Br(k) of Azumaya algebras over a commutative ring k consists of all algebras B such that the corresponding categories mod-A and mod-B consisting of k-linear morphisms are equivalent by a k-linear functor. (For fields, Br(k) consists of similarity classes of simple central algebras, and for arbitrary commutative k, this is subsumed under the Azumaya [51]1 and Auslander-Goldman [60J Brauer group. ) Numerous other instances of a wedding of ring theory and category (albeit a shot gun wedding!) are contained in the text. Furthermore, in. my attempt to further simplify proofs, notably to eliminate the need for tensor products in Bass's exposition, I uncovered a vein of ideas and new theorems lying wholely within ring theory. This constitutes much of Chapter 4 -the Morita theorem is Theorem 4. 29-and the basis for it is a corre spondence theorem for projective modules (Theorem 4. 7) suggested by the Morita context. As a by-product, this provides foundation for a rather complete theory of simple Noetherian rings-but more about this in the introduction.

From Brownian Motion to Schrödinger's Equation (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 58.09 $In recent years, the study of the theory of Brownian motion has become a powerful tool in the solution of problems in mathematical physics. This self-contained and readable exposition by leading authors, provides a rigorous account of the subject, emphasizing the "explicit" rather than the "concise" where necessary, and addressed to readers interested in probability theory as applied to analysis and mathematical physics.A distinctive feature of the methods used is the ubiquitous appearance of stopping time. The book contains much original research by the authors (some of which published here for the first time) as well as detailed and improved versions of relevant important results by other authors, not easily accessible in existing literature.
