Auch zu einem kommunistischen Kreis hatte er Verbindung. Während seiner Odyssee durch verschiedene Verstecke wurde er zweimal verhaftet. In den letzten Kriegstagen, als er um sein Leben bangte, wurde er überraschend aus dem Gefängnis des Sammellagers in der Schulstraße in Berlin-Wedding entlassen.
