Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1966, Paul Pfeiffer is considered one of the shooting stars of 20th century art. He has attracted widespread attention with his digitally processed photographs and videos in which he dissects, fragments, and eradicates familiar images of "global icons," thus raising questions about their identities, their origins, and approaches to the reconstruction of such idols in a world dominated by mass media. In his 24 Landscapes(2000), for example, he elimiates the figure of Marilyn Monroe from famous George Barris film stills, thereby diverting the viewer's gaze to the romantic landscape scenes in the background. Beginning with Pfeiffer's Self-Portrait as a Fountain (2000), this book presents readers with a selection of the artist's videos, sculptures, and photographs realized within the past three years.

Richterís painting reflects the influence of his interest in photography, and a closer look at his collector's editions reveals, in a somewhat different way, the extent to which Richter's art is based upon visual reproductions of reality. Through his reflections on the various pictorial motifs as well as the media and technical processes involved in his work, the artist has succeeded in introducing new information to the body of materials that aim to document his production.

The eldest son of painter Lyonel Feininger, he was born in Paris in 1906. Upon completion of training as a cabinet-maker at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the early 1920s, he went on to study architecture in the state schools of Weimar and Zerbst. It was while working as an architectural photographer in Stockholm that he developed the sweeping vistas and fine balance for which his pictures were famous. Emigrating to New York following the outbreak of World War II, Feininger was hired as a photo-editor by Life magazine. In his own work, he captured images of urban canyons, skyscrapers, bridges and elevated railways in concentrated, atmospheric photographs that are regarded as classical works today. He applied the same enthusiasm to nature studies: his detail images of insects, flowers, shells, wood and stones imbue these forms with a sculptural character.
